BaZi General Star (Jiang Xing): find the middle branch of the triple combination

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

The General Star (Jiang Xing) is one of the spirit stars (traditional markers read from a table, not forces in the chart). We look at which triple combination the day branch belongs to (three branches spaced four apart that form one current: Yin-Wu-Xu, Si-You-Chou, Shen-Zi-Chen, Hai-Mao-Wei) and take the middle character: Yin-Wu-Xu sees Wu, Si-You-Chou sees You, Shen-Zi-Chen sees Zi, Hai-Mao-Wei sees Mao. Then check the year, month and hour branches for that character; the day branch itself does not count. The traditional image is being able to decide, lead and manage. Whether it helps or drains, which pillar holds it, and whether it is clashed decide how to read it.

YunThe General Star is the middle branch of your day branch's three-harmony group, not any Zi, Wu, Mao or You you spot.

Data: how common the General Star is, and where it lands

By the day-branch lookup, 22.3% of charts (445) carried the General Star. It landed in the year branch 8.4%, the month branch 7.5% and the hour branch 8.3%, with 1.9% having two or more, for 485 placements in total.

In 33.4% of charts the day branch itself was Zi, Wu, Mao or You, and we do not count that as a General Star. This is another reason “I see one of the four” cannot be read as having the star.

Of the 485 placements, 15.9% were the Useful element, 22.5% favorable, 45.2% unfavorable, and 15.5% were hit by a clash. Unfavorable placements are the largest group, so read favorability before pillar position.

The year-branch lookup found the star in 23.6% of charts; the two methods disagreed on 33%, and counting either method raised the total to 39.4%. Charts with the star had Officer/Killings exposed 49.9% of the time against 47.5% without it, and were strong 45.6% against 47%.

Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. The General Star was taken as the middle character of the day branch's triple combination and looked for in the year, month and hour branches, never the day branch; the year-branch lookup was a cross-check. Placements were tagged by element favorability and by whether a clash hits them. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.

Two real charts

Wu Wu (戊午) · Xin You (辛酉) · Wu Yin (戊寅) · Ren Xu (壬戌) (male, Sep 13, 1978, 20:45, Beijing)

This chart's General Star lands on the year branch Wu, and Wu is the Useful element. True solar time was 20:35. The day branch Yin belongs to Yin-Wu-Xu, so the star is Wu; the year branch is Wu, placing it in the year pillar. All three characters are present (day branch Yin, year branch Wu, hour branch Xu), forming the Fire triple combination.

The Day Master is Wu Earth, born in a You month with heavy Output (score 3.3), and the chart is weak (support 2.1, pressure 4.9). Useful element Fire, favorable Earth, unfavorable Wood and Metal. Wu is Fire and to Wu Earth it is Direct Resource (Wu's main qi is Ding), which makes it exactly the Useful element.

With the star on a Useful element, the year pillar reads as early life, elders and outer circles. Chances to take the lead often come from someone willing to entrust you and back you. Do not read it as “a born leader.”

Ren Zi (壬子) · Gui Chou (癸丑) · Jia Chen (甲辰) · Ren Shen (壬申) (female, Jan 8, 1973, 15:45, Beijing)

This chart's General Star lands on the year branch Zi, but Zi is unfavorable. True solar time was 15:24. The birth came before the 1973 Start of Spring, so the year pillar is still Ren Zi; Minor Cold had passed, so the month pillar is Gui Chou. The day branch Chen belongs to Shen-Zi-Chen, so the star is Zi; the year branch is Zi. The Shen-Zi-Chen Water triple combination also forms (hour Shen, year Zi, day Chen), and Zi-Chou is a six combination.

The Day Master is Jia Wood with heavy Resource (score 4), and the chart is strong (support 4.3, pressure 2.7). Useful element Fire, favorable Earth and Metal, unfavorable Water. Zi is Water and to Jia Wood it is Direct Resource, which puts it in the unfavorable column.

When the star is an unfavorable Resource, “managing” easily turns into being assigned, being trusted with too much, and carrying pressure. What the chart actually needs is Fire (Output, expression and hands-on work) to spend the surplus.

How to find it: first the day branch's triple combination

Finding the General Star takes two steps: name the group, then take its middle character. Yin-Wu-Xu sees Wu, Si-You-Chou sees You, Shen-Zi-Chen sees Zi, Hai-Mao-Wei sees Mao. There is no long list to memorize; the day branch's group gives the star.

Then check the year, month and hour branches for that character; the day branch itself is not counted. If the day branch is the star's own character, you do not add a second placement on the day branch. A match in the year, month or hour branch counts, and two matches give two placements.

Not every Zi, Wu, Mao or You is a General Star

People often group Zi, Wu, Mao and You together as General Stars, and that reading is too loose. The star is the middle character of a triple combination, and those middle characters happen to be Zi, Wu, Mao and You. Seeing one of the four is not enough; the day branch still has to belong to the matching group.

In the 2,000 charts we cast, 71.5% had at least one of Zi, Wu, Mao or You in the year, month or hour branch, but 68.9% of those did not carry the General Star. This is the most common misreading of the star.

Day-branch and year-branch lookups disagree

Another common method starts from the year branch; we keep it only as a cross-check. The year branch and the day branch often belong to different groups, so they point to different star characters and the conclusions often fail to match.

The year-branch lookup found the star in 23.6% of charts, and the two methods disagreed on 33% of charts. Counting a chart as having the star if either method finds one raised the total to 39.4%. If one reading says you have it and another says you don't, the starting point is usually the reason.

Which pillar it lands in, and how to read it

Placement does not say good or bad; favorability comes first. Of the 485 placements, 15.9% were the Useful element, 22.5% were favorable, 45.2% were unfavorable, and 15.5% were hit by one of the six clashes (two branches directly opposing, such as Zi-Wu or Mao-You).

The pillar only says where this “able to lead” quality tends to show up. The year branch held 8.4%, the month branch 7.5%, the hour branch 8.3%, and 1.9% had two or more. The year pillar reads as early life, elders and outer circles; the month as youth and work; the hour as later life and a close circle.

The General Star does not promise leadership

Charts with the General Star had Officer/Killings exposed on a stem 49.9% of the time; charts without it had 47.5%, almost identical. Having the star and having authority do not travel together, so it cannot be a certificate for a leadership fate.

Charts with the star were strong 45.6% of the time, against 47% without it, again almost identical. The Ten God of the star character against the Day Master is spread wide: Direct Officer 12.8%, Eating God 12.2%, Rob Wealth 11.8%, Indirect Resource 10.5%, Direct Wealth 9.7%, Indirect Wealth 9.5%, Companion 9.1%, Hurting Officer 8.7%, Direct Resource 8.5% and Seven Killings 7.4%. A spread that wide means the star does not stand for any one Ten God.

FAQ

Does a General Star in my chart mean I am destined to be a leader?

No. The star is a marker for the traditional image of deciding, leading and managing. Charts with it had Officer/Killings exposed on a stem 49.9% of the time, and charts without it 47.5%, almost identical. Whether you lead depends on Officer/Killings, Resource, Output and your real position, not on one spirit star.

Is it bad for a woman to have a General Star? Does it make her too strong?

It is not bad, and it does not make anyone too strong. The star only marks that this quality has a place in the chart; favorability decides how to read it. On a useful or favorable element it reads as having judgment and being able to carry responsibility. On an unfavorable element it can read as managing too much and being tired. Personality and marriage depend on the whole chart, not one character.

What is the difference between the General Star and the Peach Blossom? Both are Zi, Wu, Mao and You, right?

The lookups differ. The Peach Blossom is the bathing position of the triple combination: Shen-Zi-Chen sees You, Yin-Wu-Xu sees Mao, Si-You-Chou sees Wu, and Hai-Mao-Wei sees Zi. The General Star is the middle character of the group. Both groups touch Zi, Wu, Mao and You, so they are easy to confuse, but they need not land on the same character in one chart.

I don't have a General Star. Am I stuck working for someone else forever?

Of course not. Only 22.3% of charts carry the star, and most people do not, yet plenty of them lead teams and run their own work. The star is a small traditional marker. Work and growth depend on how Officer/Killings, Resource and Output fit together, and on real skills and chances, so do not let one word box you in.
