The Three Harmonies (San He): does a full frame always transform?
The Three Harmonies are four branch frames built on birth–peak–tomb: Shen–Zi–Chen for Water, Hai–Mao–Wei for Wood, Yin–Wu–Xu for Fire, Si–You–Chou for Metal. When all three appear, we call it a full frame — stronger than a two-branch Six Harmony — but our engine does not automatically recalculate the three branches as the frame’s element.

| Frame | Element | Birth / peak / tomb |
|---|---|---|
| Shen–Zi–Chen | Water | Shen birth, Zi peak, Chen tomb |

- Full frame
- All three branches present (adjacent or not)
- Half-frame
- Only birth–peak or peak–tomb; weaker; our month analysis may still note it
- Three Meetings
- Yin–Mao–Chen Wood, Si–Wu–Wei Fire, Shen–You–Xu Metal, Hai–Zi–Chou Water — a whole season gathered
- Our engine
- Records Three Harmonies as structural evidence; does not auto-rewrite element strength (same rule as Six Harmonies)
Data: how common is a full Three Harmony in the natal chart?
Only 5.0% of charts gather a full Three Harmony, far rarer than Six Harmonies (39.5%) or clashes (40.3%); Three Meetings are 4.7%. Frame counts: Hai–Mao–Wei Wood 30, Shen–Zi–Chen Water 27, Yin–Wu–Xu Fire 27, Si–You–Chou Metal 15 (same seed, reproducible).
Among framed charts, 74.7% have the month branch inside the frame, so Three Harmonies often tug the month; 28.3% also carry a clash, which can loosen the peak.
The frame’s element equals the Useful God in only 10.1% of framed charts, and matches an unfavourable element in 30.3% — so “framed” is not “lucky”; ask favourable vs. unfavourable first.
Sample: 2,000 charts cast with our own engine (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time); fixed seed, fully reproducible.
What is a Three Harmony? Force gathering in a ring
Three branches line up as birth, peak and tomb of one element. Shen–Zi–Chen, for example: Shen is Water’s birth, Zi its peak, Chen its tomb. Together they form a Water frame. Compared with a Six Harmony (two branches holding hands), a Three Harmony is more like a ring of force, so it usually weighs more.
There is no Earth Three Harmony — Earth is read through the seasonal months and tombs, not this frame.
Does a full frame transform into that element?
Usually it has the shape of a frame without rewriting the elements. Our engine flags a Three Harmony on the result page as structural evidence, but does not recalculate the three branches as the frame’s element. That stops many charts from having their strength and favourable list rewritten just because three characters lined up.
When does the frame matter more? When the month sits inside it, a matching stem appears to lead the element, and nothing strong clashes the peak branch (Zi, Mao, Wu, You). Without those, treat it as three branches banding together and still judge each by favourable vs. unfavourable.
Half-frames and Three Meetings vs. Three Harmonies
A half-frame is a Three Harmony missing one branch — often birth–peak or peak–tomb. It is weaker; we still glance at it when asking whether the month is pulled away. Three Meetings gather a whole season (e.g. Yin–Mao–Chen for Wood) — a different route from birth–peak–tomb.
Beginners can master the four Three Harmony frames first; when a half-frame or Three Meeting shows on the result page, measure it with the same favourable/unfavourable yardstick.
Is a Three Harmony good news? Back to favourable elements
If the frame’s element is favourable, the ring helps; if unfavourable, the problem teams up. A weak Day Master that needs Water is glad to see Shen–Zi–Chen; a strong Day Master that fears Fire is pressured by Yin–Wu–Xu.
Also check whether the peak is clashed — a clash on Zi, Mao, Wu or You loosens the frame. So ask: what element does it form, is that favourable, and is the peak stable?
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A full frame always transforms | Shape without auto-rewriting elements | Same rule as Six Harmonies |
| Any Three Harmony is better than none | An unfavourable frame adds pressure | Frame element is unfavourable in 30.3% of framed charts |
| A half-frame counts as a full frame | A notch weaker; reference only | Full frames are only 5.0% of all charts |
Two real charts
Wu Yin · Ren Xu · Jia Wu · Ren Shen (female, 14 Oct 1998, 16:30, Beijing)
Jia Wood is born in Xu: late autumn Earth is strong and Wood is out of season. Two Ren Direct Resource stems feed the Day Master, but the branches Yin–Wu–Xu form a Fire Three Harmony — Fire is Jia’s output and drains Wood. The calculator rates it weak: Wood useful, Water favourable, Fire and Earth unfavourable.
The key is the frame: unfavourable Fire bands together, and the Wu day branch is the frame’s peak. Yin also clashes Shen in the hour — Yin is both the Day Master’s salary branch and the Fire frame’s birth place, so the clash shakes both the frame and the root. In luck cycles, Fire and Earth need more caution; Water and Wood are the supporting direction.
Jia Zi · Ren Shen · Geng Zi · Geng Chen (female, 3 Sep 1984, 08:00, Beijing)
Geng Metal is born in Shen, in season, with a Geng Companion on the hour stem; rated strong: Wood useful, Water and Fire favourable, Metal and Earth unfavourable. Shen, Zi and Chen complete the Water Three Harmony.
Water is output for strong Metal and sits in the favourable list: the Water frame helps drain the Day Master and then feeds Wood (the Useful God). No clash breaks the frame here. In luck, Metal and Earth add pressure; Water, Wood and Fire follow the natal direction.
FAQ
I have Shen–Zi–Chen Water in my chart. Does that mean I’m a “Water person” with a quiet personality?
It means the branches hold a Water ring of force. Temperament still depends on the Ten Gods and whether Water is favourable. Favourable vs. unfavourable matters more than “having a Three Harmony”.
If my natal chart is missing one branch of a frame, and luck or the year supplies it, does that count as a full frame?
The arriving branch can complete and activate the ring for that decade or year, but it doesn’t rewrite the natal foundation forever.
My chart has both a Three Harmony and a Six Harmony. How do I read them?
First see whether they share a branch. If they do, the Six Harmony may tie up one link of the frame; if not, read each on its own, then return to favourable elements.
Does a Yin–Wu–Xu Fire frame mean a hot temper?
That’s image-talk. When Fire is favourable it often reads as drive; when unfavourable, watch overheating. Don’t fix a personality from one frame.
Common mistakes
- A full frame always transforms: transformation needs conditions; we don’t auto-rewrite elements.
- Any Three Harmony is better than none: an unfavourable frame adds pressure.
- A half-frame counts as a full frame: it is a notch weaker.
