How to read decade luck (Da Yun): natal chart first, then the ten years
Decade luck (Da Yun) is the stem–branch that changes roughly every ten years after luck starts. The skill is not memorising forward/reverse mnemonics — it is using the natal favourable list as a ruler to measure whether those ten years support or restrain you.

| Look at | How to judge | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Natal favourable list | Useful God, favourable, unfavourable first | Talking luck before the natal chart is clear |
| Luck stem and branch | Stem colours the surface; branch roots the decade | Only reading the animal of the branch |
| Years inside the decade | Da Yun sets the baseline; the year is the ripple | Mixing year-forecast articles into Da Yun |
| Start age and direction | Know when luck starts and which way it runs | Calling forward/reverse lucky or unlucky by itself |
- Start of luck
- Converted from birth-to-term spacing; usually in childhood or early teens
- Forward / reverse
- Yang male / Yin female often forward; Yin male / Yang female often reverse — trust the calculator
- One luck pillar
- About ten years; a common reading weights the stem in the first half and the branch in the second

What is decade luck? A ten-year step
The natal chart is the eight characters at birth; Da Yun is the stem–branch sequence that follows. From the start year, each luck pillar covers about a decade and is read stacked on the natal chart. Start age and forward/reverse direction are calculated for you; what you learn is what those ten years mean for the natal chart.
Forward and reverse are not lucky or unlucky. They only set the order of pillars. Favourable vs. unfavourable still decides.
Strength first: medicine or disease?
Weak charts like Resource and Peers; strong charts like Officer/Killings, output and Wealth. A weak chart walking into mixed Wealth and Officer luck feels heavy; a strong chart walking into stacked Resource and Peers feels stuck.
Split stem and branch: the stem’s Ten God colours “what shows”; the branch colours “what roots.” When the luck branch clashes or combines with the natal month or day branch, the decade feels more eventful.
How much should start age worry you?
Knowing when you start is enough. Most people start between ages 0 and 10; our sample averages about 5. Early starts feel luck cycles in childhood; late starts spend childhood closer to the natal chart alone.
Some schools discuss a “child limit” before luck starts. Our focus stays the same: once luck has started, measure each pillar with the natal favourable list.
Don’t mix Da Yun and the year in one breath
Da Yun sets the ten-year baseline; the year is the ripple on top. Judge whether the decade overall supports or restrains, then use yearly pillars for a single year’s ups and downs. Blaming every good or bad year on Da Yun — or ignoring Da Yun and staring only at the year — both skew the reading.
How years stack on Da Yun is a separate topic; this article only clears the decade layer.
Data: when does luck start, and how often does the first pillar match the Useful God?
Across 2,000 charts, average start age is 5.12. Buckets: 0–3 years 28.9%, 3–6 29.8%, 6–9 29.1%, 9–12 12.2%; almost none start after 12.
Forward 51.1%, reverse 48.9% — nearly even, so direction itself isn’t a luck omen.
The first luck pillar’s stem element equals the Useful God in 20.6%, sits in the favourable list in 33.0%, and in the unfavourable list in 31.6% — roughly a third on-target, a third off, the rest neutral.
Sample: 2,000 charts cast with our own engine (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time); fixed seed, fully reproducible.
Two real charts
Ding Mao · Gui Chou · Ding Mao · Ren Yin (female, 13 Jan 1988, 04:00, Beijing)
Ding Fire is born in Chou: wet winter Earth, Fire out of season. Mao Direct Resource in the year and day, Yin Indirect Resource in the hour, Ren Direct Officer on the hour stem. Rated weak: Wood useful, Fire favourable, Water and Earth unfavourable — Resource first.
Luck starts around age 7.6, forward. First pillar Jia Yin (about ages 8–17): for Ding, Jia is Indirect Resource and Yin is an Indirect Resource branch — stem and branch are both Wood, exactly the Useful God. Those ten years are natal support arriving, not a verdict on whether “Jia Yin” sounds nice.
Ren Yin · Xin Hai · Yi Chou · Yi You (male, 23 Nov 1962, 18:30, Beijing)
Yi Wood is born in Hai, Water feeding Wood; Yi Companion on the hour stem and Hai Direct Resource on the month; rated strong: Fire useful, Earth favourable, Water and Metal unfavourable. Luck starts around 4.7, forward. First pillar Ren Zi (about ages 6–15): Ren Seven Killings and Zi Direct Resource — Water, which is unfavourable.
Those ten years add pressure on a strong chart: more Resource and Killings on already-strong Wood. Natal Yin and Hai also form a Six Harmony, but that doesn’t cancel another layer of Water from luck. Fire and Earth decades are the exit this chart wants.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Forward luck is good, reverse is bad | Direction is only order | Sample split is about 51:49 |
| The first pillar decides a lifetime | One pillar covers about a decade | First pillar matches the Useful God in only 20.6% |
| Late starters have no youth luck | Before luck starts you still have the natal chart | Nearly half start before age 5 |
Common mistakes
- Forward luck is good, reverse is bad: direction is only order.
- A clash from the luck branch to the Year Breaker always means disaster: judge favourable vs. unfavourable.
- Late starters have no luck in youth: before luck starts you still have the natal chart.
FAQ
Is it true the first five years of a luck pillar follow the stem and the last five the branch?
It’s a common reading: stem-weighted early, branch-weighted late. Years inside the decade still interrupt the rhythm, so don’t freeze the switch at year five.
I’m about to change luck pillars. Should I do something special?
A change is a structural shift, not an exam day. See whether the next pillar’s element is favourable, then choose push or patience — more useful than a ritual on the switch day.
Both my luck pillar and this year clash my day branch. Does that mean marriage trouble?
A clashed day branch is often linked to relationship or home movement, but movement isn’t breakup. Check whether what arrives is unfavourable and whether the natal day branch has a harmony to soften it.
If my first luck pillar is hard, did I lose at the starting line?
No. One pillar covers about a decade; more follow. A hard first pillar means keep the natal favourable list, and wait for a supporting decade.
