The Three Punishments (San Xing): punishment is not doom
Punishments are a set of “awkward, jammed” branch relations: Chou–Xu–Wei, Yin–Si–Shen, Zi–Mao, plus self-punishment when Chen, Wu, You or Hai repeats. They show friction and extra steps — not a cue to jump to prison or bloodshed.

| Type | Branches | How we read it |
|---|---|---|
| Chou–Xu–Wei | Chou, Xu, Wei | Earth punishment; friction among Earth — ask if Earth is favourable |
| Yin–Si–Shen | Yin, Si, Shen | Ungrateful punishment; often tangled with Si–Shen harmony and Yin–Shen clash |
| Zi–Mao | Zi, Mao | Uncivil punishment; two branches offending each other |
| Self-punishment | Chen–Chen, Wu–Wu, You–You, Hai–Hai | Same branch repeats; energy turns inward on that element |

Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Three Punishments mean disaster or prison | Friction, not a verdict | Full Three Punishments are only 2.9%; self-punishment is common |
| Self-punished people have twisted character | Repetition intensifies force | Self-punishment is 15.2% of the sample |
| Punishment is always worse than clash | Different natures; don’t rank worse | 37.2% of punished charts also have a clash |
What is punishment? Friction, not a verdict
The first meaning is awkwardness and drag — not “you’re going to jail.” Online lists that jump to prison, surgery and bloodshed scare more than they teach. In real charts, punishment more often shows as extra friction, strained ties, plans that need two tries — and those still get their weight from favourable vs. unfavourable.
The three classic sets plus self-punishment differ: Chou–Xu–Wei is Earth among Earth; Yin–Si–Shen often entangles with Si–Shen harmony and Yin–Shen clash; Zi–Mao is Water–Wood offence; self-punishment is the same branch twice or more.
Three questions when you see a punishment
First: are the punished branches favourable or unfavourable? Unfavourable branches punishing each other can burn each other down; favourable ones being punished is a discount. Second: is the set complete? Chou–Xu–Wei and Yin–Si–Shen need all three for full force; two of three are a notch lighter. Third: is a clash or harmony nearby? A clash beside a punishment makes motion louder; a harmony may tie part of it up.
We flag punishments in branch relations; the Useful God conclusion still follows strength first and does not flip because a punishment appears.
How to read self-punishment
Chen, Wu, You or Hai appearing twice (or more) is self-punishment. It often intensifies that branch’s own image: two Wu, hotter Fire; two You, tighter Metal. Good or bad still depends on whether that element is favourable and whether the Day Master can carry it.
Self-punishment is common — about 1 in 7 charts in our sample. Scaring yourself with the label alone is empty.
How (not) to map punishment onto life events
Don’t one-to-one it. Traditional image banks link punishment to lawsuits, surgery or kin strain — that’s an image library, not a diagnosis. A strong chart with unfavourable branches punishing each other can still run fine; a weak chart with the Useful God punished needs more margin in the matching luck years.
Treat punishment as a “this junction isn’t smooth” flag, then return immediately to strength and favourable elements — that is our stance.
Data: how common are punishments, and how rare is a full Three Punishment?
24.9% of charts carry at least one punishment (including self-punishment). Self-punishment is 15.2% of all charts; Zi–Mao is 7.0%; a full Chou–Xu–Wei or Yin–Si–Shen set is only 2.9%.
Self-punishment counts: You–You 88, Wu–Wu 83, Chen–Chen 75, Hai–Hai 62. Full sets: Chou–Xu–Wei 32, Yin–Si–Shen 25.
Among punished charts, 37.2% also have a clash and 55.7% involve the month branch — when the month is punished, read structure carefully, but still ask favourable vs. unfavourable before fear.

Two real charts
Xin Wei · Wu Xu · Ding Chou · Gui Mao (female, 3 Nov 1991, 06:30, Beijing)
Ding Fire is born in Xu. Wei, Xu and Chou gather as Chou–Xu–Wei punishment; Chou and Wei also clash. Xin Direct Wealth and Gui Direct Officer on the stems; rated strong: Metal useful, Earth and Water favourable, Fire unfavourable.
Here Earth is favourable (output draining a strong Fire). The punishment sits among favourable Earth — better read as “Earth circulation is jammed, work takes extra steps” than “punishment means disaster.” Chou–Wei clash makes the motion louder; Mao Indirect Resource in the hour feeds unfavourable Fire, so watch Fire getting stronger. When luck revisits Chou, Xu or Wei, ask whether Metal, Earth and Water still hold — don’t open with fear.
Ren Wu · Jia Chen · Geng Xu · Geng Chen (male, 12 Apr 2002, 07:45, Beijing)
Geng Metal is born in Chen, Earth feeding Metal; Geng Companion on the hour stem; rated strong: Wood useful, Fire and Water favourable, Earth and Metal unfavourable. Month Chen and hour Chen form Chen–Chen self-punishment, and the Xu day branch clashes Chen — self-punishment plus clash.
Earth is Resource for strong Metal and sits unfavourable: two Chen self-punish means unfavourable Resource wrestling itself, while Chen–Xu clash burns Earth force in a head-on hit. Read it as “heavy Resource that won’t sit still,” not as doom; Earth and Metal luck needs margin, Wood–Fire–Water luck is the exit.
FAQ
I have Chou–Xu–Wei. Does that mean bad health or leg problems?
Earth images link to digestion and limbs in the image bank, but health can’t be judged from one punishment. Whether Earth is favourable matters more than the label.
Does Yin–Si–Shen mean a lifetime of travel and restlessness?
That set is often linked to movement images. Whether the motion is chosen or forced depends on whether what’s activated is favourable.
This year punishes my day branch. Should I be extra careful?
A punished day branch can surface relationship or home topics — not guaranteed bad news. Check whether the year’s element is unfavourable and whether a natal harmony softens it.
If only two of three punishment branches appear, does it still count?
Yes, but weaker. When luck supplies the third, the set activates more clearly.
Common mistakes
- Three Punishments mean prison or surgery: structure, not a verdict.
- Self-punished people are twisted: repetition intensifies force; judge favourable first.
- Punishment is always worse than clash: different natures; don’t rank “worse”.
