How do the six branch clashes work in BaZi?

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-14

The six clashes pair Earthly Branches that sit directly opposite each other; what really collides are their hidden stems, and the result depends on strength: the strong side damages the weak one, while a weak branch clashing a strong one only provokes it.

Data: how common is a clash in the birth chart?

40.3% of charts contain at least one of the six clashes. Having a clash is normal, not a red flag.

The six pairs are evenly spread: Mao–You 158, Chen–Xu 145, Yin–Shen 139, Chou–Wei 136, Si–Hai 133, Zi–Wu 126 (a chart can have more than one).

22.6% have the month branch itself clashed; those deserve the closest look.

Sample: 2,000 charts cast with our own engine (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time); fixed seed, fully reproducible.

What actually clashes?

The hidden stems. Zi holds Gui Water, Wu holds Ding Fire and Ji Earth, so Zi–Wu is Water against Fire, and Ji Earth also presses Gui Water. Both sides take part; a clash is never one-way.

Who wins? Strength, not slogans

Rules like “Zi can clash Wu but Wu cannot clash Zi” don’t hold up. Look at who is in season, who is rooted and who holds power in the chart: in summer, Wu Fire is strong and it is Zi that gets hurt.

When the two are evenly matched, the side with more allies prevails. A weak branch clashing a strong one fails and simply agitates it, which rarely brings anything good.

Is a clash good or bad?

Usually more harmful than helpful, but removing an unfavourable element is good; removing a favourable one is the real loss. A branch that combines with one side spreads the impact and softens it.

Are all four clashes together a special structure?

Some texts treat a full set (Zi, Wu, Mao, You, for instance) as noble. Four branches battering each other is inherently unstable, so don’t read nobility into it unless the stems make the chart work. Earth clashes open “storage” and cut both ways.

Does position matter?

Yes. Adjacent pillars clash most directly; year–hour is the weakest. A clashed month branch shakes the whole chart; a clashed day branch touches the Day Master directly.

Two real charts

Yi You · Ren Wu · Bing Zi · Bing Shen (female, 21 Jun 2005, 16:30, Beijing)

Wu (month) and Zi (day) sit side by side and clash. Born in a Fire month, Wu is strong and Zi is weak, so Zi takes the damage. This Bing Fire chart runs hot and needs Water, so Zi is exactly the useful element: this clash is the chart’s weak spot. Some relief: Shen in the hour hides Ren Water and half-combines with Zi, and You Metal feeds Water. Years that clash Zi again or add Fire deserve attention.

Jia Chen · Bing Yin · Gui Si · Ren Xu (female, 14 Feb 1964, 21:15, Beijing)

Chen in the year and Xu in the hour clash, the farthest possible distance, which already weakens the effect. Gui Water is weak-leaning; the calculator uses Metal, favours Water, and marks Earth and Wood unfavourable. Chen and Xu are both Earth, so two unfavourable characters collide: not a bad clash for this chart. One caveat: Chen stores a little Gui Water, so years that shake Chen again can disturb that root.

FAQ

I have a Zi–Wu clash. Does that make me hot-tempered?

That’s a popular association, but temperament comes from the Ten Gods and structure, not from one clash.

This year clashes my day branch. Will I break up?

Day-branch clashes are often read as change in relationships or home. Change is not the same as separation.

Can a clash in my chart be “fixed”?

In BaZi, a clash is eased when something combines with one side. Practically, leave more margin in the years that trigger it.
