The month pillar: the heaviest pillar in the chart
The month pillar is a month stem plus a month branch, and the month branch stands for the season you were born in. Tradition links it to parents, siblings and your younger years. What matters more is weight: when judging strength, the month branch alone counts 2 points and the whole pillar 3, out of 7. Our rule is that if the month branch's main qi (its largest hidden stem) is the Day Master's Resource or Peer, the chart is strong in principle. The month pillar changes at solar terms, not on the first day of a lunar month.

Two real charts
Jia Yin · Bing Yin · Yi You · Gui Wei (female, 13 Feb 1974, 14:30, Beijing)
Month first. The month pillar is Bing Yin; the main qi of Yin is Jia Wood, Rob Wealth to an Yi Wood Day Master, a Peer. By our rule, the month supports and the chart is strong in principle.
Then the points. The Jia Yin year pillar counts only 1 point, while Bing Fire on the month stem (Hurting Officer), You Metal on the day branch (Seven Killings) and Wei Earth on the hour branch (Indirect Wealth) all push against the Day Master. Support 3.1, pressure 3.9: support is behind on points. It's still strong, because the month outweighs the score. Born after Start of Spring and before Awakening of Insects, on the 22nd of the first lunar month, so lunar and solar-term months happen to agree.
Pattern and Useful God: Peers aren't used to set a pattern, and the Bing Fire hidden in Yin shows on the month stem, so the chart's focus is the Hurting Officer. Fire (Output) useful, Metal and Earth favorable, Wood unfavorable. Early spring brings plenty of Wood and lingering cold; Fire drains the surplus Wood and warms the chart, so strength balance and seasonal balance point to the same element.
Geng Wu · Jia Shen · Gui Chou · Jia Yin (male, 16 Aug 1990, 03:45, Beijing)
The month pillar first. This is the 26th of the sixth lunar month, so by lunar reckoning it's month six. But Start of Autumn fell on 8 August, so by solar terms it's already a Shen month: the month pillar is Jia Shen, not the sixth month's Gui Wei. Go by the lunar calendar and the month pillar is wrong.
Then the month command. Shen's main qi is Geng Metal, Direct Resource to a Gui Water Day Master, normally supportive. But the Yin hour branch clashes Shen, and the Day Master has no main-qi root in the year, day or hour branches (Wu, Chou and Yin carry Ding, Ji and Jia). That's an exception: the month's help can't be relied on, so we go to the points, support 2.7 against pressure 4.3, weak.
Water (Peers) useful, Metal and Fire favorable, Earth and Wood unfavorable. Metal is Resource and feeds the Day Master. Fire is favorable as seasonal balance for strong Metal and cold Water in early autumn, not a call for more Wealth, so it isn't listed as unfavorable. Read only the month and you'd call this chart strong; check the exception and the answer flips.
Data: how heavy the month pillar is, and where it goes wrong
41.0% of charts (819) have a supportive month branch, and 85.2% of those come out strong; of the 1,181 without one, only 20.0% do. 74.7% of all strong charts have a supportive month.
23.6% of supportive-month charts hit an exception (clashed with no other main-qi root, or combining into a controlling, draining or exhausting element) and fall back on points. 12.6% of all charts have a supportive month while the points don't favor support; 86.1% of those are still strong.
Lunar month and solar-term month differ for 26.9% (539). The month branch's element is unfavorable 66.7% of the time and favorable 21.4%; the month stem favorable 53.0%, unfavorable 32.8%. The month branch's main qi shows on a stem in 31.6% of charts.
Statistics: 2,000 birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time). “Supportive month” means the month branch's main qi is the Day Master's Resource or Peer. “Points”: year stem and branch 0.5 each, month branch 2, the rest 1 each, day stem not counted, hidden stems split 6:3:1 (main, middle, residual). Lunar months were compared without leap months against solar-term months (Start of Spring opening month one).
Why the month pillar weighs the most
The season decides whether an element has strength, and the month branch is the season. Jia Wood born in spring and Jia Wood born in autumn are worlds apart. So in the strength count the year stem and branch get 0.5 each, the month branch 2 and the rest 1 each; the month pillar takes 3 points, 42.9%.
In our charts, 41.0% had a supportive month branch (main qi Resource or Peer), and 85.2% of those came out strong. Flip it around: of all strong charts, 74.7% had a supportive month. When the month doesn't support, only 20.0% end up strong. That's why the month branch is the first thing to look at.
Supportive month means strong? Two exceptions
In principle yes, unless the month branch itself is taken away. One: the month branch is clashed and the Day Master has no main-qi root in any other branch, so the month's help can't be relied on. Two: the month branch combines with others into an element that controls, drains or exhausts the Day Master (for Geng Metal, a Xu month joining Wu and Yin into Fire), so the month has switched sides.
In both cases we fall back on the points: strong only if support outscores pressure. Among supportive-month charts, 23.6% hit an exception. Going the other way, 12.6% of all charts (251) had a supportive month while the points didn't favor support, and 86.1% of those still came out strong: the month outweighed the score.
Solar terms or lunar months?
Solar terms. Each month pillar starts at a seasonal node: Start of Spring opens the Yin month, Awakening of Insects the Mao month, Clear and Bright the Chen month, and so on, with no link to the lunar first day. We compared lunar month with solar-term month for all 2,000 charts and 26.9% didn't match. Use the lunar month and more than one person in four gets the wrong month pillar.
If you were born close to a node, true solar time (local time from your birthplace's longitude) also matters. We cast all four pillars on true solar time; if you were born within a few hours of a node, cast both sides and compare.
Is your month pillar favorable? Many people get it backwards
Two-thirds of month branches are unfavorable. In our charts the month branch's element was favorable 21.4% of the time and unfavorable 66.7%. Odd at first, but simple: when the month supports, the Day Master is strong and that supporting element is now surplus (unfavorable in 72.5% of those charts); when it doesn't, the Day Master is usually weak and the month's draining element is unfavorable too (62.7%).
The month stem is different: favorable 53.0%, unfavorable 32.8%. So don't treat a “strong month” as good news, and don't worry that your month branch is unfavorable; that's how most charts are.
Parents, siblings and younger years
The palace scheme is only a rough guide. Tradition puts ancestors in the year, parents, siblings and youth in the month, the spouse in the day branch, children and later life in the hour. A favorable month pillar reads as support from upbringing and family; an unfavorable one means that area takes more effort, not “you'll clash with your parents”.
In 31.6% of charts the month branch's main qi shows on a stem. That revealed Ten God tends to be visible in temperament and early experiences, and tradition often uses it to set the pattern; when it stays hidden, that force works more quietly.
Common mistakes
- The month pillar follows the lunar month: it follows solar terms; going by lunar month puts 26.9% of people in the wrong month.
- A supportive month always means strong: a clashed month or one that combines into another element sends you back to the points.
- An unfavorable month branch means trouble with your parents: 66.7% of charts have one; palaces are only a rough guide.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The month pillar follows the lunar month | It changes at solar terms | Going by lunar month puts 26.9% of people in the wrong month pillar |
| A supportive month always means strong | A clash or a combination sends you back to the points | 23.6% of supportive-month charts hit an exception |
| The stronger the month, the better | A surplus supporting element turns unfavorable | In supportive-month charts the month branch is unfavorable 72.5% of the time |
| The month pillar is only about parents and siblings | It decides strength first | It carries 3 of the 7 points |
FAQ
What's the month command? Is it the same as the month pillar?
Not quite. The month pillar is two characters, the month stem and branch; the month command is the month branch alone, your birth season. In the strength count that one branch is worth 2 points, double the month stem, which is why it gets talked about so much.
I was born on the day of a solar term. Which month pillar do I get?
It depends on whether your birth moment falls before or after the exact time of the node, using true solar time at your birthplace. Before it, the previous month pillar; after it, the next. If you're within a few hours, cast both and see whether strength and the Useful God change.
My month pillar has Seven Killings or Hurting Officer. Does that mean a bad relationship with my parents?
That mapping doesn't hold. Check whether it's favorable first: if so, it often reads as an upbringing with pressure that also toughened you; if not, it's an area that needs more communication and care. How you get along with your parents depends far more on real life than on one Ten God.
My month branch is clashed. Will I leave home early?
A clashed month branch shows up in 22.6% of charts, so it's common. For us it first affects strength: if the month supports but is clashed and the Day Master has no other main-qi root, we don't count the month's support. As an image it can mean a changeable early life, and leaving home early is only one possibility; read it with your luck cycles and real history.
