The hour pillar: where the whole chart lands

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-18

The hour pillar comes from your birth hour: an hour stem and an hour branch. Tradition links it to children, later life and the people who work under you. We weight something else more: it's where the chart's energy finally settles. Favorable characters here, with roots, make the whole chart run smoother; strong unfavorable ones here need more care. It's also the pillar most often wrong, because birth times are often fuzzy.

Two real charts

Ren Shen · Gui Chou · Bing Wu · Jia Wu (female, 25 Jan 1993, 12:00, Beijing)

Bing Fire born in a Chou month. The month is Earth, Bing's Hurting Officer, so it doesn't help, and Ren and Gui Water on the year and month stems press hard. We rate it weak (support 2.33, pressure 4.67): Wood (Resource) useful, Fire and Water favorable, Metal and Earth unfavorable.

The Jia Wu hour: Jia Wood on the hour stem is Indirect Resource, the Useful God itself; Wu Fire below is Rob Wealth, a Peer, and favorable. The pressure sits in the year and month, and the chart lands on one character that feeds and one that supports. Tradition would read support from children in later life. We care more about its weight in the strength count: both hour characters are on your side, and without them this chart would be much weaker. A winter Bing Fire also wants Water for seasonal balance, which is why Water is favorable here rather than unfavorable.

Yi Si · Xin Si · Xin Wei · Bing Shen (female, 17 May 1965, 15:45, Beijing); compare 17:45 the same day, hour pillar Ding You

Born at 15:45: hour pillar Bing Shen. Xin Metal in a Si month, with Fire in command pressing on Metal; Shen Metal on the hour branch is Rob Wealth and supports, Bing Fire on the hour stem is Direct Officer. We rate it weak (support 3.3, pressure 3.7): Earth (Resource) useful, Metal and Water favorable, Wood unfavorable.

Two hours later, at 17:45, the hour pillar becomes Ding You. You Metal is a Companion, purer support than Shen, which also hides Ren Water. Support rises to 3.6 against 3.4 and the verdict flips to strong: Fire (Officer/Killings) becomes the Useful God, Water and Wood favorable, Metal unfavorable. Same day, same person, one hour apart, and the Metal that helped you turns unfavorable. That's why an uncertain hour deserves two casts.

What does the hour pillar govern?

It's the chart's landing point, so it carries real weight. Read the pillars from year to hour like a story from opening to ending. If favorable characters arrive at the hour with roots and in season, the chart gets a good close; if unfavorable ones dominate here, that's where pressure settles.

The traditional palace scheme, which maps each pillar to people and areas of life, puts ancestors in the year, parents in the month, the spouse in the day branch and children plus later life in the hour. It's a fair rough guide but shouldn't be pushed. A favorable hour reads as support from children or reports and a more relaxed later life; an unfavorable one means that area takes more effort, not “no children” or “a lonely old age”.

Is your hour pillar favorable or not?

Name the elements of the hour stem and branch, then look them up in your favorables. Across our 2,000 charts, the hour branch was favorable in 41.5% of charts and unfavorable in 44.3%; the hour stem 46.9% and 38.3%. Only 20.9% had both favorable and 18.6% both unfavorable. Most people's hour pillars help with one hand and push with the other.

Unless the Day Master is very strong, an hour that feeds or supports it is best. When it's very strong, an hour that drains or restrains it is better, as long as it doesn't overdo it. And however important the hour is, the pattern of a chart comes from all four pillars, never the hour alone.

One double-hour off: how much changes?

More than most people expect. We shifted every chart's birth time by one double-hour (two hours earlier or later) and recast it. The hour pillar changed every time; the strength verdict flipped in 21.2% of charts, the Useful God changed in 40.0%, and something among useful, favorable or unfavorable changed in 75.4%.

The reason is simple. Strength is weighed across all eight characters, and the hour stem and branch carry 2 of the 7 points. When support and pressure, the two sides that feed and weigh on the Day Master, are close, a different hour pillar tips the balance. If you're unsure of your time, cast both neighbouring hours and trust the conclusions that survive.

Which clock should the hour come from?

True solar time at your birthplace, not the clock on the wall. Clocks follow a time zone, so “3 p.m.” puts the sun in different places for eastern and western cities. We convert from your birthplace's longitude and the date automatically; for Beijing births, true solar time usually runs a few minutes to half an hour behind the clock.

Two cases need care. Births near the boundary between two hours, like 14:55 or 15:05, can land in different hours once converted. And if true solar time is past 23:00, we count the day pillar from the next day for BaZi. In both cases, cast the neighbouring hour too and compare.

Data: shift the birth time by one double-hour

Across 1,938 charts recast one double-hour later or earlier, the hour pillar changed 100% of the time, strength flipped 21.2%, the Useful God changed 40.0%, and some part of useful/favorable/unfavorable changed 75.4%. One hour off flips strength in about one chart in five and changes the Useful God in two in five.

Hour pillars themselves split roughly evenly: hour branch favorable 41.5%, unfavorable 44.3%, neutral 14.2%; hour stem favorable 46.9%, unfavorable 38.3%. Both favorable 20.9%, both unfavorable 18.6%.

The Ten God on the hour stem is spread evenly, from Indirect Wealth at 11.1% down to Rob Wealth at 8.9%; no hour-stem type is especially common.

Statistics: 2,000 birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time). “One double-hour”: birth time plus two hours (minus two for births after 20:00), all else unchanged; 62 charts whose year, month or day pillar also changed were left out, leaving 1,938.

Common mistakes

FAQ

I don't know my birth time. Can I still get a BaZi reading?

Partly. Year, month and day don't depend on the hour, so your Day Master and season are fixed. Strength and the Useful God, though, often move with the hour: shifting one double-hour flipped strength in 21.2% of our charts. Cast the likely hours and keep what stays the same.

Seven Killings in my hour pillar: will my kids be hard to handle?

That mapping doesn't hold. Seven Killings, the element that controls the Day Master with the same polarity, should first be checked as favorable or not. In a strong chart it's often useful and reads as structure and responsibility later in life; in a weak one it needs Resource to soften it. How children turn out depends far more on family and on their own temperament.

I was born just after 11 p.m. Which day is my day pillar?

If true solar time is past 23:00, we use the next day for BaZi. For Beijing births, a clock time just after 23:00 often converts to before 23:00, so cast both and compare if you're close.

My hour pillar is favorable. Does that guarantee a comfortable old age?

It's a good sign: the chart has a solid landing, and later life and children are more likely sources of support. But later years also depend on the luck cycles then, your health and family; one pillar can't promise it.
