Reading the spouse star: male or female first, then favorable or not

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-18

The spouse star is the Ten God that stands for a partner: Wealth (the element the Day Master controls) in a man's chart, Officer/Killings (the element that controls the Day Master) in a woman's. We read it in three steps: is its element favorable or unfavorable; is it present, and where; and how does it sit with the day branch, the spouse palace. Neither its presence nor its count settles when or how well you marry.

Why Wealth for men and Officer for women?

It's the traditional kinship map: what you control is the wife, what controls you is the husband. A man's Day Master controls Wealth, so Wealth stands for his wife; a woman's is controlled by Officer/Killings, so they stand for her husband. The mapping is old and usable, but it's a label.

The same Wealth star in a man's chart also means money and things he manages; the same Officer star in a woman's also means rules, pressure and work. So when you see “lots of Wealth” or “lots of Officers”, don't jump to romance. Ask what that element is doing in this chart.

Favorable or not matters more than present or not

A favorable spouse star broadly means partnership is a source of support; an unfavorable one means it takes more work and adjustment. Men's Wealth was favorable in 47.9% of our charts and unfavorable in 38.5%; women's Officer/Killings 51.2% and 28.6%. Plenty on both sides, so “I have a Wealth star” tells you little.

Strength is the hinge. In strong men's charts Wealth was favorable 94.1% of the time, in weak ones 7.8%. In strong women's charts Officer/Killings were favorable 91.3%, in weak ones 15.4%. For weak charts the spouse star usually leans unfavorable, which means find your own footing first in a relationship, not “a bad marriage”.

No spouse star: late marriage, or none?

No. Charts without one are rare, and in most of them the missing star is still a favorable element. Men with no Wealth anywhere (stems, branches or hidden stems) made up 4.1%, and 75.0% of them had Wealth as favorable; women with no Officer/Killings made up 5.0%, with 56.1% favorable. The missing piece is often exactly what the chart wants and what luck can bring.

Plenty of people with no spouse star in the natal chart have steady relationships. Judge partnership from the chart's overall balance: whether the Day Master is rooted, whether favorables fit together, how luck runs. Not from counting one star.

Star and palace disagree. Which wins?

Read both; disagreement means more nuance, not that one is wrong. The palace is the day branch, the star is a Ten God, and they often point different ways. In our data they agreed (both favorable or both unfavorable) for 43.1% of men and 40.5% of women, and pointed opposite ways for 32.1% and 31.3%.

When they diverge, read it as one side running smoothly and the other needing attention; which shows first depends on whether luck activates the star or the palace.

Two real charts

Wu Shen · Wu Wu · Ding Mao · Bing Wu (female, 26 Jun 1968, 13:00, Beijing)

Ding Fire born in a Wu month. Wu's main qi, Ding, is a Companion, so the month supports and we rate it strong (support 4, pressure 3). Bing Fire on the hour stem is Rob Wealth; the two Wu Earth stems are Hurting Officer.

For a woman the spouse star is Officer/Killings, here Water. There's no Water on any stem or as any branch's main qi; only a trace of Ren Water hides in the Shen year branch. Yet Water (Officer) is the Useful God, with Earth and Metal favorable and Wood and Fire unfavorable: so much Fire needs Water to balance it. The chart barely has a spouse star, and that star is what it needs most. Reading: partnership tends to be a balancing force in life, and Water-strong cycles and years bring relationship topics forward. A faint star means waiting and tending, not no marriage or a late one.

Jia Xu · Ding Mao · Geng Shen · Bing Xu (male, 4 Apr 1994, 19:45, Beijing)

Geng Metal born in a Mao month. The month is Wood, Geng's Wealth, and gives no support; Bing Fire (Seven Killings) and Ding Fire (Direct Officer) also show on stems. We rate it weak (support 2.05, pressure 4.95): Metal (Peers) useful, Earth favorable, Water and Wood unfavorable.

For a man the spouse star is Wealth. Jia Wood on the year stem is Indirect Wealth and Mao Wood in the month is Direct Wealth, so the star is present and prominent, yet Wood is unfavorable: a weak Day Master can't carry it. The spouse palace, the Shen day branch, is a Companion and the Useful God itself. Star unfavorable, palace favorable: read it as a relationship with plenty of practical load (money, obligations) but day-to-day footing of its own. Metal and Earth luck steadies the Day Master, and then Wealth turns from burden to help.

Data: how common the spouse star is, and which way it leans

870 men's charts, 1,130 women's. Men's Wealth: on a stem 51.4%, only as a branch's main qi 28.0%, only hidden in branches 16.4%, absent 4.1%. Women's Officer/Killings: 49.0%, 29.3%, 16.6% and 5.0%. About 95% of people have a spouse star somewhere.

The spouse star's element was favorable for 47.9% of men and 51.2% of women, unfavorable for 38.5% and 28.6%. Strength splits it sharply: strong men 94.1% favorable vs weak men 7.8%; strong women 91.3% vs weak women 15.4%.

Where the star was missing entirely, 75.0% of men still had Wealth as favorable and 56.1% of women had Officer/Killings favorable. Both kinds on stems at once: 6.3% of men, 6.2% of women.

Statistics: 2,000 birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time). Gender was assigned at random with even odds; this run has 870 men and 1,130 women. “Main qi” is the dominant hidden stem of a branch; “absent” means no stem or hidden stem carries it.

FAQ

I'm a woman with no Officer star in my chart. Will I struggle to marry?

You can't read it that way. Only 5.0% of women's charts lack Officer/Killings entirely, and in 56.1% of those it's still a favorable element that luck can supply. When you marry depends a lot on circumstances and choices; a chart can at most flag years when relationships come up more.

Does a man with lots of Wealth have a wandering eye?

Lots of Wealth first means lots of money and responsibilities, not lots of romance. For a weak chart it often means being busy and stretched; for a strong one, the capacity to carry it. Fidelity is character and choice; a chart only shows which part of a relationship needs care.

My spouse star is unfavorable. Will I end up with the wrong person?

No. Unfavorable only means this isn't where your support comes from and that it takes more tending; weak charts usually have it that way. What a partner is like depends on the day branch, luck and how two people get along, not one factor.

Can BaZi tell when I'll meet the right person?

Readers look at when luck activates the spouse star or palace, for example the star's element on a year's stem, or a year combining with your day branch. Those are years when relationships come up; whether you meet someone and whether it works out depends mostly on real life.
