Jia Wood Day Master: what it is and how to read it
Jia is Yang Wood: upright and growing, it stands up to pressure and is hard to combine away. To read a Jia Day Master, first check whether it is in season and rooted, then whether the chart is too hot or cold. Don’t read personality off the “tall tree” metaphor.

At a glance
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Element · polarity | Wood · Yang |
| Lu (prosperity) | Yin |
| Growth stage | Hai |
| Combine / clash | combines with Ji; clashes with Geng |
| Most common issue | Born in autumn: Metal is strong and Jia weak, so it first needs Resource and Friends |
| Ten Gods for a Jia Day Master | Jia Friend, Yi Rob Wealth, Bing Eating God, Ding Hurting Officer, Wu Indirect Wealth, Ji Direct Wealth, Geng Seven Killings, Xin Direct Officer, Ren Indirect Resource, Gui Direct Resource |
How is Jia different from Yi?
Both are Wood; the difference is Yin and Yang. Jia is Yang and resists Metal head-on; Yi is Yin and bends around it. So a Jia Day Master rarely “follows” a strong Officer, and the bar for a follow pattern is higher than for Yi.
Jia’s Lu is Yin and its Growth stage is Hai: Yin, Mao and Hai branches are its firmest roots.
Why is autumn Jia almost always weak?
In Shen, You and Xu months Metal rules and controls Wood. 94% of autumn Jia charts in our sample are weak. Strength leads: look for Resource (Water) and Friends (Wood) first, not for “pruning”.
If Fire is also strong, Jia is both drained and controlled, and Resource matters even more.
Does winter Jia always need Fire?
A common rule says “winter wood takes Fire first”. But winter Water feeds Wood, and 51% of winter Jia charts in our sample are actually strong. A strong chart needs draining anyway, and Fire both drains and warms, so strength and climate agree.
If winter Jia is weak and shallow-rooted, support it first; cold is a repair item, not the main rule.
Data: what does Jia need in each season?
Our sample has 557 Jia Day Masters. Of 149 born in autumn, 94% are weak, and the Useful element is Wood (47.7%) or Water (40.9%), both supporting.
78.5% of 121 summer Jia charts take Water; 66% of 144 spring Jia charts are strong, and half take Fire. Over the year the Useful element matches the climate hint only 47.4% of the time, so for the other half strength decides.
Sample: 6,000 charts cast with our own engine (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time, fixed seed 20261014, reproducible). Seasons by month branch: Yin–Mao–Chen spring, Si–Wu–Wei summer, Shen–You–Xu autumn, Hai–Zi–Chou winter.
Two real charts
Xin You · Geng Zi · Jia Zi · Wu Chen (female, 12 Dec 1981, 07:45, Beijing)
Jia is born in Zi, mid-winter. Two Zi branches and the Chen water store make Resource heavy, so Jia ends up somewhat strong. A strong chart needs draining; fire (output) drains the extra wood and also warms the chart, so the calculator uses Fire, favours Earth and Metal, and marks Water unfavourable. Strength and climate point the same way here.
Bing Chen · Ding You · Jia Zi · Geng Wu (female, 9 Sep 1976, 12:45, Beijing)
Jia is born in You, autumn, out of season; Geng (Seven Killings) shows on the hour, and Bing and Ding drain it on the year and month. The chart is weak. The climate hint says Metal, but strength leads: weak Jia first needs Water to feed it, so the calculator uses Water, favours Wood and marks Earth unfavourable. When the climate hint and strength disagree, strength decides.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Jia is a tree that fears Metal | Judge Jia’s strength first | Autumn Jia is weak 94% of the time; spring Jia is strong 66% of the time and Metal balances it |
| Winter wood always takes Fire | Strength leads; Fire drains and repairs the cold | 51% of winter Jia charts are strong, so Fire is both |
| Rootless Jia is dead wood | Count support from season, branches and stems | Over-literal metaphors ignore Resource and luck pillars |
FAQ
How do I tell Jia and Yi Day Masters apart?
Both are Wood: Jia is Yang, Yi is Yin. Jia resists pressure and rarely follows; Yi adapts and is more easily swept along by the chart.
What does the Jia–Ji combination mean for a Jia Day Master?
Ji is Jia’s Direct Wealth, so the combination shows attention tied up by Wealth. Whether it transforms into Earth depends on the month; usually read it as a tie, not a transformation.
Which element does a Jia Day Master need most?
There is no single answer: autumn Jia usually needs Water and Wood; summer Jia usually Water; strong spring Jia often Fire. Use the result on the chart page.
Is a Jia woman different from a Jia man?
The Day Stem doesn’t change by sex; the Ten Gods do the work. Women’s charts read the Officer, men’s the Wealth star.
Common mistakes
- Jia is a tall tree, so Jia people are upright and dependable: metaphors help memory; personality comes from the Ten Gods.
- Geng Seven Killings means Jia gets chopped down: for a strong Jia, Geng shapes it; only weak Jia fears it.
- Winter Jia always takes Fire first: check strength; half of winter Jia charts are strong, and then Fire both drains and warms.
