Yi Wood Day Master: what it is and how to read it

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-14

Yi is Yin Wood: flexible and good at borrowing strength; under pressure it bends around rather than resisting. To read a Yi Day Master, weigh how much Metal controls it, Fire drains it and Earth wears it, then whether Water feeds it and Wood helps. Climate is a repair, not the rule.

Data: how concentrated are Yi’s Useful elements?

Our sample has 629 Yi Day Masters, one of the most concentrated stems: the Useful element matches the climate hint 70% of the time.

Autumn (161): 96.9% weak, 82% take Water. Summer (141): 83.7% take Water. Winter (173): 60.1% take Fire. Concentrated isn’t fixed: almost a quarter of winter Yi take Wood, and those are the weak ones.

Sample: 6,000 charts cast with our own engine (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time, fixed seed 20261014, reproducible). Seasons by month branch: Yin–Mao–Chen spring, Si–Wu–Wei summer, Shen–You–Xu autumn, Hai–Zi–Chou winter.

What does Yi’s “softness” mean in a chart?

Yin stems go with the flow: Yi doesn’t resist Metal head-on like Jia, so it is more easily combined or swept into a follow pattern. With very heavy Officers and no roots, take a follow pattern seriously.

Yi’s Lu is Mao and its Growth stage is Wu (Yin-stem reckoning). Mao is its direct root; Yin and Hai help too.

Why does autumn Yi almost always take Water?

In autumn Metal rules, and Xin is Yi’s Seven Killings. 96.9% of autumn Yi charts are weak and 82% take Water. Water is Resource: it feeds Wood and turns Metal’s force into support, which is what “transforming the Killings” means.

Using Fire to control Metal looks direct, but Fire drains Yi further, so the calculator rarely picks it.

Winter Yi: strength and climate together

Winter Water feeds Yi, so 45.7% of winter Yi charts are strong and 60% take Fire. For a strong chart, Fire drains and warms at once.

If winter Yi is weak (27.2%), the calculator supports it with Wood or Water first and keeps Fire as a favourable repair. The second chart below shows this.

Two real charts

Ji Si · Gui You · Yi Hai · Wu Zi (female, 13 Sep 1989, 00:00, Beijing)

Yi is born in You, autumn, with Seven Killings ruling the month; earth and metal drain and control it, so Yi is somewhat weak. Gui on the month stem and the Hai and Zi branches give it strong Resource. The calculator uses Water, favours Wood and marks Metal and Fire unfavourable: Water transforms the Killings and feeds Yi, the classic autumn Yi pattern, and the climate hint agrees.

Jia Chen · Ding Chou · Yi Hai · Bing Xu (male, 21 Jan 1965, 20:45, Beijing)

Yi is born in Chou, winter. Bing and Ding drain it, and three earth stores (Wealth) wear it down, so Yi is somewhat weak. The climate hint is Fire, but Fire is what drains Yi. Strength leads, so the calculator takes Wood (Friends) to carry the Wealth, favours Water and Fire, and marks Earth and Metal unfavourable. Fire stays only as a favourable repair for the cold.

FAQ

How is a Yi Day Master different from Jia?

Both are Wood: Yi is Yin and adaptable, more easily combined or swept along; Jia is Yang and resists.

What does the Yi–Geng combination mean?

Geng is Yi’s Direct Officer, so Yi is closely tied to rules, duty and, in a woman’s chart, a partner. Transformation depends on the month; usually read it as a tie.

Which element does a Yi Day Master need most?

Autumn and summer Yi usually need Water; strong winter or spring Yi usually Fire. Use the chart page result.

Which careers or colours suit a Yi Day Master?

Go by the Useful element, not the day stem: Water if Water is useful, Fire if Fire is.
