Gui Water Day Master: what it is and how to read it
Gui is Yin Water: fine and nourishing, it depends on Metal for its source. To read a Gui Day Master, check whether summer Fire and Earth have dried it out or winter has made it too strong, then choose Metal, Water, Fire or Earth. Climate is only a repair.

How is Gui different from Ren?
Both are Water: Ren is abundant and needs a dyke; Gui is fine and needs a source. Gui is more easily carried away by Earth, so a follow pattern is easier for Gui than Ren.
Gui’s Lu is Zi and its Growth stage is Mao (Yin-stem reckoning); it combines with Wu and clashes with Ding, its Indirect Wealth.
Summer Gui: seven in ten take Metal
In Si, Wu and Wei months Fire (Wealth) uses Gui up and Earth (Officer) controls it. 79.3% of summer Gui are weak and 72.9% take Metal, the Resource that feeds Water and drains Earth.
Spring is similar: Wood drains Water, 65% weak, 67.5% take Metal.
Does winter Gui always take Fire?
62.9% of winter Gui are strong, yet only 29.6% take Fire; Metal 27%, Earth 25.8%. Strong Gui takes Earth when it is available; weak winter Gui (27.7%) still needs Metal or Water.
Over the year Gui’s Useful element matches the climate hint only 48.5% of the time, one of the lowest of any stem: the season alone can’t decide.
Two real charts
Wu Shen · Ding Si · Gui Wei · Jia Yin (male, 13 May 1968, 04:45, Beijing)
Gui is born in Si, summer; Ding and Si (Wealth) use it up, Wei and Wu (Officers) control it, and Jia Yin drains it, so Gui is somewhat weak. Shen is its only source: the calculator uses Water, favours Metal and marks Wood and Fire unfavourable. The climate hint, Metal, matches the favourable element.
Yi You · Yi You · Gui Hai · Geng Shen (female, 6 Oct 2005, 17:00, Beijing)
Gui is born in You, autumn; two You and the Geng Shen hour are Resource and Hai is its Lu, so Gui is strong. The climate hint is Metal, but more Metal would only strengthen it. Strength leads: the calculator uses Fire (Wealth) and favours Earth and Wood.
Data: why is Gui’s Useful element hardest to guess?
Our sample has 573 Gui Day Masters. Summer (140): 79.3% weak, 72.9% take Metal. Spring (117): 65% weak, 67.5% take Metal.
Winter (159): 62.9% strong, but the Useful element splits Fire 29.6%, Metal 27%, Earth 25.8%. Over the year it matches the climate hint only 48.5% of the time.
Sample: 6,000 charts cast with our own engine (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time, fixed seed 20261014, reproducible). Seasons by month branch: Yin–Mao–Chen spring, Si–Wu–Wei summer, Shen–You–Xu autumn, Hai–Zi–Chou winter.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Winter Gui always takes Fire | Check strength, then whether Earth or Fire is usable | Winter Gui: Fire 29.6%, Metal 27%, Earth 25.8% |
| Weak Gui just needs more Water | Weak Gui first needs Metal as a source | 72.9% of summer Gui take Metal |
| Gui fears Earth | Strong Gui needs Earth to hold it | Strong winter Gui often takes Earth |
Common mistakes
- Gui is dew, so Gui people are gentle and sensitive: personality comes from the Ten Gods.
- Winter Gui always takes Fire: only 29.6% do.
- Wu–Gui always transforms into Fire: it depends on the month; usually it is a tie.
FAQ

Wu is Gui’s Direct Officer: ties to rules, duty and, in a woman’s chart, a partner. Transformation depends on the month.
Which element does a Gui Day Master need most?
Summer and spring Gui usually take Metal; strong autumn or winter Gui may take Fire, Earth or Metal. Use the chart page result.
