BaZi Life Palace (Ming Gong): how to calculate it, and why it is not the Zi Wei palace

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-20

The BaZi Life Palace (Ming Gong) is a branch derived from your birth month and birth hour and shown in the “Life Palace, conception pillar and Growth tables” section of your chart results. Count the month number and the hour number from Yin: Yin 1, Mao 2, Chen 3, Si 4, Wu 5, Wei 6, Shen 7, You 8, Xu 9, Hai 10, Zi 11, Chou 12. Add the two, subtract the sum from 14 if it is under 14, or from 26 if it is 14 or more, and turn the result back into a branch. The stem comes from the year stem by the Five Tiger Escape (the rule that fixes the Yin month stem from the year stem). Our month number changes at the mid-climate, and the solar-term convention differs only in the half month after each mid-climate. The palace is reference only: it does not enter strength or favorability, and it is not the Life Palace of the Zi Wei system.

Two real charts

Yi Chou (乙丑) · Ji Chou (己丑) · Ding Chou (丁丑) · Ren Yin (壬寅) (male, Feb 2, 1986, 05:15, Beijing)

This birth falls in the half month after a mid-climate, so the two conventions land on different branches. True solar time was 04:46. The month pillar is Ji Chou (a Chou month by solar term, number 12), but Great Cold that year fell on January 20 at 16:46. The birth came after Chou's mid-climate, so we use the next month, Yin, number 1. The hour branch is Yin, number 1.

Our count: 1+1=2, 14−2=12 gives Chou; the year stem is Yi, and Yi/Geng years start at Wu Yin, so counting to Chou gives Ji Chou. By solar-term months: 12+1=13, 14−13=1 gives Yin, and the palace is Wu Yin. The Day Master is Ding Fire, weak (scores support 1.4, pressure 5.6); Useful element Wood, favorable Fire, unfavorable Water and Earth.

Same chart, one palace on an unfavorable element and one on the Useful element: that is exactly why the palace cannot set favorability. Our Ji Chou is Earth and sits in the unfavorable column; Wu Yin is Wood, the Useful element itself. The palace is background; strength and favorability still come from the four pillars.

Wu Chen (戊辰) · Jia Yin (甲寅) · Ji Hai (己亥) · Geng Wu (庚午) (female, Feb 14, 1988, 12:30, Beijing)

Here both conventions fall in the same month, so the palace has only one answer. True solar time was 12:01. The lunar calendar is still in the twelfth month of the Ding Mao year, but the 1988 Start of Spring has passed, so the year pillar is Wu Chen. The birth came after Start of Spring and before Rain Water on February 19, so both conventions give a Yin month, number 1. The hour branch is Wu, number 5.

1+5=6, 14−6=8 gives You; the year stem is Wu, and Wu/Gui years start at Jia Yin, so counting to You gives Xin You. The Day Master is Ji Earth, weak (scores support 2.6, pressure 4.4); Useful element Fire, favorable Earth, unfavorable Metal and Water.

The palace You is Metal and sits in the unfavorable column; You is not among the four branches and does not clash the day branch Hai. The palace only adds a background tone. Strength and favorability are read from the four pillars, and the palace is neither lucky nor unlucky on its own.

How to calculate it: add two numbers, then subtract from 14 or 26

The Life Palace takes three steps: count the month, count the hour, and turn the subtraction into a branch. Both counts start at Yin: Yin 1, Mao 2, Chen 3, Si 4, Wu 5, Wei 6, Shen 7, You 8, Xu 9, Hai 10, Zi 11, Chou 12.

Add the two numbers; if the sum is under 14 subtract it from 14, and if it is 14 or more subtract it from 26. The result is the palace branch. For the stem, use the Five Tiger Escape from the year stem: Jia and Ji years start at Bing Yin, Yi and Geng at Wu Yin, Bing and Xin at Geng Yin, Ding and Ren at Ren Yin, Wu and Gui at Jia Yin, then count on to the palace branch. The year stem changes at Start of Spring.

Our month rule: past the mid-climate, use the next month

We take the month number by mid-climate, not by solar term. If the birth came after that month's mid-climate (Rain Water, Spring Equinox, Grain Rain, Grain Buds, Summer Solstice, Great Heat, End of Heat, Autumnal Equinox, Frost Descent, Light Snow, Winter Solstice or Great Cold), the next month's number is used. If not, the current month's number stands.

The other common approach simply uses the month pillar's branch number, and the month pillar changes at the solar terms (Start of Spring, Awakening of Insects and the rest). The two conventions therefore differ only during the half month after a mid-climate and before the next solar term. At all other times they give the same answer.

How far apart are the two conventions? Nearly half the charts

The mid-climate and solar-term conventions produced different Life Palaces in 46.7% of charts (934). That is not a small edge case, so a palace from another site failing to match yours is common.

All twelve branches appear as the palace at rates between 7.3% and 8.9%, a very even spread. No branch is favored. The palace branch also appears among the four natal branches in 36.6% of charts, and clashes the day branch in 7.3%.

What the palace counts for here: reference only

We put the Life Palace in the “Life Palace, conception pillar and Growth tables” section and use it as reference only; it does not enter strength or favorability. The palace branch's element was the Useful element in 17.4% of charts, favorable in 32.5%, and unfavorable in 34.3%.

Those shares are too modest to set favorability from the palace. Strength and the control-drain-spend count in the four pillars decide the Useful element. The palace adds a background tone, nothing more.

It is not the Zi Wei Life Palace

The BaZi Life Palace and the Life Palace of the Zi Wei system are built differently and should not be read together. The BaZi palace counts the birth month and hour from Yin and subtracts the sum; the Zi Wei palace is placed on its own chart and its own palaces.

When you see the words “Life Palace,” ask which system is speaking first. The same term means different things in the two systems, and using a Zi Wei palace to judge BaZi favorability points the reading the wrong way.

Data: where the Life Palace lands, and whether it can set favorability

In the 2,000 charts we cast, the mid-climate and solar-term conventions gave different Life Palaces in 46.7% of charts (934). The two only split during the half month between a mid-climate and the next solar term, but plenty of births fall in that window.

The palace branch's element was the Useful element in 17.4%, favorable in 32.5% and unfavorable in 34.3%. The three shares do not fill the set; the rest is neutral.

The palace branch also appeared among the four natal branches in 36.6% of charts, and clashed the day branch in 7.3%. Most palaces are a character outside the four pillars, and only a minority connect to the natal chart.

All twelve branches served as the palace at rates between 7.3% and 8.9%. The spread is even, so the palace itself leans toward no element and cannot be used to fill a missing one.

Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. The palace was counted from the birth month and hour starting at Yin, subtracting from 14 below 14 and from 26 at 14 or above, with the stem set by the Five Tiger Escape from the year stem. Our month number changes at the mid-climate; the solar-term convention was compared against it. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.

FAQ

Is the BaZi Life Palace the same as the Zi Wei Dou Shu Life Palace?

No. The BaZi Life Palace counts the birth month and hour from Yin, adds the two, subtracts from 14 or 26, and sets the stem by the Five Tiger Escape from the year stem. The Zi Wei Life Palace is placed on its own chart and its own palaces. The two systems speak different languages, so do not use one term to judge the other.

Why do different BaZi sites give me a different Life Palace?

Usually the month number. We change the month at the mid-climate, so after Rain Water, Spring Equinox and the like the next month's number is used. The other common approach uses the month pillar's branch number and changes at the solar terms. The two differ only during the half month between a mid-climate and the next solar term, but that covers 46.7% of charts.

My Life Palace is on the day branch or gets clashed. Is that bad?

Not from that alone. We keep the palace in the appendix as reference and do not let it enter favorability. The palace branch clashes the day branch in only 7.3% of charts, and a clash means a connection and movement, not a verdict. Go back to strength and the Useful element in the four pillars before drawing a conclusion.

I don't know my exact birth time. Can I still calculate the Life Palace?

Not reliably. The palace comes from adding the month number and the hour number, so one wrong hour branch changes it to another branch. If the birth sits near the boundary between two hours, do not take the palace seriously. Confirm the birth time first, then talk about the palace.

Yun's tipThe Life Palace doesn't feed strength or the Useful element; one counting change can move it, so don't pick your Useful element from it.
