What does a strong Day Master favor? Separate Resource-heavy from Companion-heavy
A strong Day Master means the day stem (the character that stands for you) carries more force than the rest of the chart can use. Support and drain (the first pass that reads strength and then sends a strong chart toward control, drain and spend) points a strong chart at three directions: Officer and Killings (the element that controls the Day Master), Output (Eating God and Hurting Officer, what the Day Master produces), and Wealth (what the Day Master controls). Which one comes first depends on whether the strength was piled up by Resource (the element that feeds the Day Master, standing for care, study and backing) or by Companions and Rob Wealth (the same element as the Day Master, peers who both help and compete). Get the origin right before naming an element.

Start with strength: a strong chart goes toward control, drain and spend
A strong Day Master first asks how to put the extra force to use, not how to add more. In support and drain, control is Officer and Killings, drain is Output, and spend is Wealth. All three move energy away from the Day Master, so they point the same way. Adding more Resource or Companions only tips the balance further.
In the 2,000 charts we cast, 885 were strong, 44.3% of the total. We left out 102 charts with special structures (Follow charts and dominant-element charts that run with the flow instead of against it). Nearly half of all charts land here, which is why the question is worth asking properly.
The same strength can come from Resource or from Companions
Where the strength came from decides which direction to use first. Our strength scoring gives the year stem and year branch 0.5 points each, the month branch 2 points, and everything else 1 point; hidden stems inside a branch share its points by how prominent they are. On that count, a strong chart is Resource-heavy when Resource scores above Companions, and Companion-heavy when Companions score at least as high.
Resource-heavy charts numbered 443, 50.1% of strong charts; Companion-heavy charts numbered 442, 49.9%. The split is almost exactly even. One line, “a strong Day Master uses Wealth,” cannot cover both halves.
Resource-heavy strength: Wealth comes first
When Resource built the strength, Wealth is the first tool because Wealth controls Resource. Too much Resource reads as slow, waiting, leaning on others. Wealth pares the excess care down a layer. The point is not to dislike Resource; it is to bring Resource back to a usable weight.
In the 443 Resource-heavy strong charts, Wealth was the Useful element 44% of the time, Output 28.4% and Officer/Killings 27.5%. Wealth leads, Output can still drain, and Officer/Killings falls back. When you read a chart like this, look first for the bit of Wealth it holds; that is often the missing opening.
Companion-heavy strength: Officer and Killings come first
When Companions built the strength, Officer and Killings come first because they can govern the peers. Too many peers is a room where everyone talks at once. Officer and Killings are rules and restraint; they gather the force and point it one way. Govern does not mean crush.
In the 442 Companion-heavy strong charts, Officer/Killings was the Useful element 51.4% of the time, Output 33.9%, and Wealth only 14.5%. Wealth comes last here because Companions snatch Wealth, so Wealth alone is unrealistic. Output works in both groups: it drains the surplus.
Climate adjustment and unfavorable elements: two easy misreads
When the climate is too cold or too hot, we still set the Useful element by support and drain, and we do not list the climate-adjustment element as unfavorable even when it is Resource or Companions. It is treated as idle and used sparingly, not as another drag. We list at most two unfavorable elements, ordered by how much they hold the chart back.
Among strong charts, the Resource element was unfavorable in 71.5%, the Companion element in 79.7%, and both in 54.7%. Of the 401 charts without both, 195 escaped because that element was exactly what the climate needed. Strength is not a verdict on fate either. Season and strength are separate tests: 73.8% of strong charts were in season, and 26.2% (232 charts) were judged strong while out of season. In 8% of strong charts, none of Output, Wealth or Officer/Killings appeared on the year, month or hour stems.
Two real charts
Jia Shen (甲申) · Ren Shen (壬申) · Gui You (癸酉) · Wu Wu (戊午) (female, Aug 22, 2004, 12:00, Beijing)
This chart is strong because Resource keeps stacking up. True solar time was 11:43. The Day Master is Gui Water, born in a Shen month; the main qi of Shen is Geng Metal, Direct Resource, so the month command feeds the Day Master. On the stems, Jia is Hurting Officer, Ren is Rob Wealth and Wu is Direct Officer; the branches Shen, Shen and You are all Resource, and Wu is Indirect Wealth.
The scoring says Resource-heavy: Resource 2.5, Companions 1.75, Officer/Killings 1.58, Wealth 0.67, Output 0.5. We judge the chart strong (the month branch supports it; support 4.25, pressure 2.75). Resource outranks Companions, so this is the Resource-heavy kind and Wealth comes first. Useful element Fire, favorable Earth and Wood, unfavorable Metal and Water.
The chart has Fire in only one place, the hour branch Wu, so Fire is what it lacks most. Wu hides Ding and Ji; Ding is Indirect Wealth. The Wu Earth Direct Officer and the Jia Wood Hurting Officer both sit in the favorable column. Fire and Earth luck run more smoothly; more Metal and Water clogs the chart. Read it as Wealth first, not Officer first.
Xin Si (辛巳) · Xin Chou (辛丑) · Xin Chou (辛丑) · Bing Shen (丙申) (male, Feb 2, 2002, 17:15, Beijing)
This chart is strong because Companions hold it up. True solar time was 16:46. The birth came before the 2002 Start of Spring on February 4, so the year pillar is still Xin Si. The Day Master is Xin Metal, born in a Chou month; the main qi of Chou is Ji Earth, Indirect Resource, so the month command supports the Day Master. The stems are Xin, Xin and Bing; the branches are Si, Chou, Chou and Shen.
The scoring says Companion-heavy: Companions 2.55, Resource 1.95, Officer/Killings 1.3, Output 1.2, Wealth 0. We judge the chart strong (the month branch supports it; support 4.5, pressure 2.5). Companions outrank Resource, so Officer and Killings come first. Useful element Fire, favorable Water and Wood, unfavorable Earth and Metal.
The hour stem Bing Fire combines with the day stem Xin, but we count the combination without transformation, so Bing still counts as Officer. There is no Wood at all, so Wealth alone is not realistic. Water, the Output element, sits in the favorable column and drains the surplus Metal. Read it as Officer and Killings to gather the peers first, then Output to split the flow.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A strong Day Master always uses Wealth | Separate Resource-heavy from Companion-heavy first | Wealth is Useful in 44% of Resource-heavy charts but only 14.5% of Companion-heavy charts |
| A strong Day Master means a good fate | Strength only sets the direction of the balance | Strength decides control-drain-spend versus support; whether life goes well depends on whether the Useful element has force and whether the luck cycles fit |
| In a strong chart, Resource and Companions are always both unfavorable | Both are listed together only a little over half the time | Both were unfavorable in 54.7%; the climate element is not listed |
| A strong Day Master must be in season | A chart can be strong out of season | 26.2% of strong charts were out of season, 232 charts |
Data: where the Useful element lands in strong charts
Of the 2,000 charts we cast, 885 were strong, 44.3%. The 102 special-structure charts are excluded, so these numbers describe ordinary strong charts judged by support and drain.
Across strong charts, the Useful element was Officer/Killings 39.4%, Output 31.2% and Wealth 29.3%. All three sit inside control, drain and spend, and none reaches half. That is the clearest sign that where the strength came from has to be checked first.
The two groups split sharply: in the 443 Resource-heavy charts, Wealth was Useful 44%, Output 28.4% and Officer/Killings 27.5%; in the 442 Companion-heavy charts, Officer/Killings was Useful 51.4%, Output 33.9% and Wealth 14.5%. Wealth is first in one group and last in the other. A single rule would misread one half of the strong charts.
Strong charts were in season 73.8% of the time, and 26.2% (232 charts) were strong while out of season; 8% had no Output, Wealth or Officer/Killings on the year, month or hour stems. Strength and season overlap often, but they are not the same test.
Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. A chart is strong by our strength scoring and month support; the Resource-heavy and Companion-heavy groups compare the Resource score with the Companions score. Special structures are excluded, and the Useful element is grouped into Officer/Killings, Output, Wealth, Resource and Companions. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.
Common mistakes
- A strong Day Master uses Wealth: Wealth is Useful in 44% of the 443 Resource-heavy charts, but only 14.5% of the 442 Companion-heavy charts.
- A strong Day Master means a good fate: 44.3% of the 2,000 charts were strong; strength only says which way to adjust the balance.
- Resource and Companions are always both unfavorable in a strong chart: both were listed in 54.7%, and the climate element is not listed by our rules.
- A strong Day Master must be born in a supporting season: 26.2% of strong charts were out of season, 232 charts, and still judged strong.
FAQ
Is a strong Day Master good or bad?
Neither on its own. A strong Day Master means the day stem carries more force, so the chart works better with control, drain and spend. Whether life runs smoothly also depends on whether the Useful element has force and whether the luck cycles match. In the 2,000 charts we cast, 44.3% were strong; no single label can cover that many people.
Does a strong Day Master woman have a strong personality and a difficult marriage?
Not from strength alone. Strength says the day stem is on the heavy side; personality depends on where Output and Officer/Killings sit and whether they are favorable. Marriage depends even more on the two people and their real choices. A strong Day Master often reads as having opinions, which is not the same as a difficult marriage, and one factor cannot settle it.
Will I lose money when a Companions luck cycle comes if my Day Master is strong?
Not necessarily, but it deserves attention. Companions are your own element, so a strong chart meeting more of them tips the same side again. If Wealth is favorable, friends, partnerships or impulsive spending can open a leak during those years. Whether money actually goes depends on clashes and combinations in that cycle and on how strong Wealth is; the words “Companions luck cycle” alone cannot decide it.
What colors and industries suit a strong Day Master?
They are light hints, and the direction still comes from the Useful element. Strong charts use control, drain and spend: Resource-heavy ones look for Wealth first, Companion-heavy ones for Officer/Killings, and Output works for both. Bringing the Useful element's color or field into daily life is fine, but do not treat it as the key to a career. Real conditions matter more.
