Weak Day Master: Resource or Peers first?

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-17

A weak Day Master means the day stem, which stands for you, lacks the strength to handle the characters that drain or control it. Help comes from only two directions: Resource, the element that produces you, and Peers, elements the same as you. Which comes first depends on what presses hardest. “Add whatever element your chart lacks” is a different idea altogether, and the missing element is often exactly what you shouldn't add.

If the month's main qi is Resource or Peer, the chart is strong; otherwise score the seven characters other than the day stem by position, and weak means support scores below pressure

Two real charts

Geng Zi · Ji Mao · Ren Yin · Wu Shen (male, 15 Mar 1960, 17:15, Beijing)

Ren Water born in a Mao month. Spring Wood is strong, and Wood is what Ren Water produces; Ji Earth Direct Officer on the month stem and Wu Earth Seven Killings on the hour stem control the Water as well. We rate it weak (support 1.9, pressure 5.1). Count the eight characters, Geng Metal, Ji Earth, Ren Water, Wu Earth, Zi Water, Mao Wood, Yin Wood, Shen Metal, and there's no Fire: in popular terms, “missing Fire”.

Yet the Useful God is Metal (Resource), with Water and Earth favorable and Wood and Fire unfavorable. Fire is Ren Water's Wealth, and more Wealth only tires a weak chart, so “add Fire” gets it backwards. Metal is what's needed: Geng on the year stem and the Shen hour branch are Resource, feeding Water and trimming Wood. Earth is favorable because it produces Metal and because spring climate balancing also calls for it, not because Earth controlling Water is good for the Day Master. Metal and Water luck runs smoother; in heavy Wood and Fire years, take on only what you can carry.

Gui Wei · Yi Mao · Ji Hai · Xin Wei (male, 27 Mar 2003, 14:15, Beijing)

Ji Earth born in a Mao month. Yi Wood on the month stem and the Mao month branch are both Seven Killings, and Hai, Mao and Wei can gather into a Wood frame: heavy pressure. We rate it weak (support 1.35, pressure 5.65). No Fire shows among the eight characters here either.

This time the missing element is the Useful God: Fire (Resource) is useful, Earth favorable, Metal and Water unfavorable. Fire converts the Killings' pressure into support, and the trace of Ding Fire hidden in Wei is nowhere near enough, so Fire luck works best. Wood is the heaviest pressure, but spring climate balancing calls for Wood too, so we don't list it as unfavorable; just don't add more. Next to the first chart: both are “missing Fire”, one should add it and one shouldn't. Strength and favorables decide, not what's missing.

Data: where weak charts' Useful God lands, and how reliable “add the missing element” is

53.1% of 2,000 charts are weak. Among the 1,009 weak charts outside special patterns, the Useful God is Resource in 77.3% and Peers in 22.6%, with only 0.1% elsewhere; every one lists both Resource and Peers among its useful and favorable elements.

Missing elements are common: 70.3% of all charts lack at least one, and so do 65.5% of weak charts. Checking the 789 missing elements in weak charts against their favorables: 29.4% are the Useful God, 45.2% are useful or favorable, and 28.9% are unfavorable.

In weak charts the climate element matches the Useful God 49.0% of the time. So support and seasonal balance point to the same element about half the time; the other half you need to rank them.

Statistics: 2,000 birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time). “Missing” counts the elements of the four stems and four branches themselves, not hidden stems.

What exactly are we strengthening?

The two groups that back the Day Master: Resource and Peers. Resource is like someone who supplies and supports you; Peers are like companions standing beside you. In a weak chart, the Useful God, the element most needed, almost always comes from these two.

Of our 2,000 charts, 53.1% are weak. Among the 1,009 weak charts outside special patterns, the Useful God is Resource in 77.3% and Peers in 22.6%, 99.9% combined. Every one of them lists both groups among its useful and favorable elements; only the order differs.

Resource first or Peers first?

It depends on what weighs on you most. Heavy Officer/Killings: Resource first, converting control into support. Heavy output: Resource again, feeding you while reining in the drain. Heavy Wealth: Peers first, because Wealth attacks Resource and any Resource you add won't hold.

That's why Resource leads far more often: most weak charts are pulled down by Officer/Killings or output, and only the heavy-Wealth kind puts Peers in front. For your own chart, the Useful God and favorables in the reading show the order.

Is “add whatever's missing” right?

No. Quite a few missing elements are unfavorable. “Missing” usually means an element doesn't appear among the eight characters, which says nothing about strength. If a weak chart lacks Wealth or Officer, adding it just stacks on more pressure.

In our data, 65.5% of weak charts lack at least one element. Checking each missing element against the favorables, only 29.4% are the Useful God, and 28.9% are unfavorable, about the same. Adding what's missing is close to a coin toss.

Should the season be strengthened too?

Yes, but after support. Winter charts run cold and summer charts dry, so the season can make one element especially wanted; that's climate balancing. In weak charts the climate element matches the Useful God 49.0% of the time, so the two often point the same way.

When they don't, add Resource and Peers first, then pick among them whatever also helps the climate. The element the climate calls for is never listed as unfavorable, even when it isn't the Useful God.

FAQ

How do I strengthen a weak chart? Do colours or jewellery help?

The direction is your Useful God, usually Resource or Peers. Colours, directions and accessories are a very light reference, far less important than luck cycles and real choices such as studying, finding reliable partners and not carrying too much at once.

Does a weak Day Master mean poor health?

Weak describes the balance of forces in a chart, not a medical result. Health depends on habits, check-ups and medical advice; chart strength alone can't judge it.

My chart is “missing Fire”. Should I add a Fire character to my name?

First check whether Fire is favorable for you. Nearly three in ten missing elements in weak charts are unfavorable, so the wrong addition can add weight. A name change is a big decision; what's missing isn't a good enough reason on its own.

How can I tell whether I need Resource or Peers?

Cast your chart and look at the Useful God and favorables: if the Useful God produces your element, lead with Resource; if it is your own element, lead with Peers. As a rule of thumb, heavy Officer/Killings or output calls for Resource, heavy Wealth for Peers.
