Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue (Tian De / Yue De): read the day stem only
Heavenly Virtue (Tian De) and Monthly Virtue (Yue De) are two spirit stars (traditional markers read from a table, not forces in the chart). We look both up from the birth month's branch against the day stem (the stem of the day pillar, standing for you), and the day stem is the only stem we check. Heavenly Virtue: Yin month Ding, Chen month Ren, Si month Xin, Wei month Jia, Shen month Gui, Xu month Bing, Hai month Yi, Chou month Geng. In Mao, Wu, You and Zi, the four cardinal months, the circulated table points to branches (Shen, Hai, Yin and Si), so we do not assign Heavenly Virtue there. Monthly Virtue: Yin-Wu-Xu months Bing, Shen-Zi-Chen months Ren, Hai-Mao-Wei months Jia, Si-You-Chou months Geng. The traditional image is a generous temperament and a sense of proportion; we read it as a baseline of character, not as extra money, extra backing or a life without trouble.

Two real charts
Ding Chou (丁丑) · Ji You (己酉) · Geng Wu (庚午) · Geng Chen (庚辰) (female, Sep 25, 1997, 08:00, Beijing)
This chart has Monthly Virtue, landing on the Day Master itself. True solar time was 07:54. A You month belongs to Si-You-Chou, so Monthly Virtue is Geng; the day stem is exactly Geng, which gives Monthly Virtue. You is a cardinal month, so we do not assign Heavenly Virtue. The hour stem is also Geng, and a four-stem lookup would call that “double Monthly Virtue”; we count only the day stem.
The Day Master is Geng Metal born in a You month, and the chart is strong (the month branch supports it; support 5.28, pressure 1.72). Useful element Fire, favorable Water and Wood, unfavorable Earth and Metal. Chen and You form a six combination.
Monthly Virtue lands on the Day Master, but Metal is the unfavorable element here. Read the virtue as having a sense of proportion and disliking head-on conflict, not as a bonus to luck. What the chart needs is Fire (Officer and Killings), and both the year stem Ding and the day branch Wu carry it.
Ji Wei (己未) · Yi Hai (乙亥) · Yi You (乙酉) · Yi You (乙酉) (male, Nov 14, 1979, 17:15, Beijing)
This chart has Heavenly Virtue and no Monthly Virtue. True solar time was 17:15. In a Hai month Heavenly Virtue is Yi, and the day stem is exactly Yi, so it counts. Monthly Virtue for Hai-Mao-Wei months is Jia, the day stem is not Jia, so we do not count it (there is no Jia in the chart either). A four-stem lookup would count the month, day and hour stems, all Yi, as Heavenly Virtue.
The Day Master is Yi Wood, and the chart is strong (the month branch supports it; support 4.05, pressure 2.95). Useful element Fire, favorable Earth, unfavorable Water and Metal.
Wood, the Day Master itself, is not listed as unfavorable, because we list at most two and Water and Metal hold this chart back more. With a strong chart, Wood is still not what you lack. Heavenly Virtue here reads as a mild temperament and leaving others room; the Useful element is still Fire (Output).
How to look them up: the day stem is the only stem
Both stars are matched from the birth month's branch to the day stem, and no other stem is checked. Heavenly Virtue: Yin month Ding, Chen month Ren, Si month Xin, Wei month Jia, Shen month Gui, Xu month Bing, Hai month Yi, Chou month Geng. Monthly Virtue: Yin-Wu-Xu months Bing, Shen-Zi-Chen months Ren, Hai-Mao-Wei months Jia, Si-You-Chou months Geng.
A match counts; the year, month and hour stems are ignored. That is our rule, and it is where we differ from many other lookups. The day stem stands for you, so virtue landing on the day stem is what lets it speak about temperament and conduct.
The four cardinal months: no Heavenly Virtue from us
In Mao, Wu, You and Zi we do not assign Heavenly Virtue. The circulated table points to branches in those four months (Shen, Hai, Yin and Si), not stems, which does not fit the “read the day stem” rule.
Charts born in the four cardinal months are 33.8% of the total, and by our rule none of them has Heavenly Virtue. This is a boundary of the lookup, not a lack of virtue in the person; Monthly Virtue is still read from the triple-combination group and is unaffected.
Why Monthly Virtue often appears with a strong Day Master
Monthly Virtue's stem is the yang stem of the element that rules the season's triple combination, so a matching day stem often means the birth season supports the Day Master. That is why Monthly Virtue charts tend to be strong; the star does not make anyone strong.
Monthly Virtue charts were strong 72.5% of the time, against 46.7% of all charts. The Day Master's own element was listed as unfavorable in 56.4% of Monthly Virtue charts, against 37% of all charts, and as useful or favorable in only 26.5%, against 51% of all charts.
Virtue is a temperament baseline, not extra luck
The virtue element is the Day Master's own element, so whether it helps or drains follows strength. The traditional image is a generous nature, a sense of proportion and room to turn when trouble comes; we read that as a baseline of character only.
We do not read it as extra money, extra backing, or a life without disaster. Heavenly Virtue charts were strong 51.1% of the time, with the Day Master's element unfavorable 36.3% and useful or favorable 46.7%. The same character reads differently depending on favorability.
Another site says you have it and we say you don't: the lookup differs
The common alternative checks all four stems, and in the four cardinal months it checks a branch for Heavenly Virtue. That finds far more matches. We check only the day stem, so another site may say you have it while we do not.
By the four-stem lookup, Heavenly Virtue came to 30.9%, Monthly Virtue to 34.8%, and at least one to 46.4%; 71.2% of those charts are not found by our rule. Ask which lookup was used before arguing about whether the star is there.
Data: how common the two virtues are, and what they say
By our day-stem-only rule, 6.8% of charts (135) had Heavenly Virtue and 10.2% (204) had Monthly Virtue. Both appeared in 3.6% (72 charts, all born in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei months, where the two stars share a stem), and at least one appeared in 13.3% (267 charts).
Charts born in the four cardinal months Mao, Wu, You and Zi are 33.8% of the set, and by our rule none of them has Heavenly Virtue. That follows from the lookup, not from anything missing in the chart.
The four-stem lookup found Heavenly Virtue in 30.9%, Monthly Virtue in 34.8%, and at least one in 46.4%; 71.2% of those charts are not found by our rule. The gap between the methods is large, so ask which one is in use.
Monthly Virtue charts were strong 72.5% of the time, against 46.7% of all charts; the Day Master's element was unfavorable in 56.4%, against 37%. Heavenly Virtue charts were strong 51.1%, with the Day Master's element unfavorable 36.3% and useful or favorable 46.7%.
Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue were matched from the month branch to the day stem only; Heavenly Virtue is not assigned in the four cardinal months (Mao, Wu, You, Zi). The four-stem lookup was run as a cross-check. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.
Common mistakes
- Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue mean a life of safety: they are a temperament baseline; 13.3% had at least one, and favorability still follows strength.
- A stem in any pillar counts: we check only the day stem; 71.2% of the 46.4% found by the four-stem lookup are not found by our rule.
- Monthly Virtue is auspicious, so more is better: in Monthly Virtue charts the Day Master's element was unfavorable 56.4% of the time and useful or favorable only 26.5%.
- Mao, Wu, You and Zi months also have Heavenly Virtue: we do not assign it in those four months, and 33.8% of charts are born in them.
FAQ
Do Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue mean I will never face a major disaster?
No such guarantee. Here they read as a baseline of temperament and conduct, not as a protective charm. In Monthly Virtue charts the Day Master's element was unfavorable 56.4% of the time and useful or favorable only 26.5%. Risk in life still depends on the whole chart and on real choices.
Does having Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue mean a woman will marry well?
Marriage cannot be settled by one spirit star. The two virtues describe a generous, measured baseline; a good marriage also depends on the two people, their circumstances and the whole chart. A marriage is read from the whole chart and real life, not from one marker.
Why does another site say I have Heavenly Virtue when you say I don't?
Most likely a different lookup. The common approach checks all four stems, and for Heavenly Virtue in the four cardinal months it checks a branch. We check only the day stem and do not assign Heavenly Virtue in Mao, Wu, You or Zi months. Of the 46.4% found by the four-stem lookup, 71.2% are not found by ours. Ask which lookup the other reading used.
Does it matter whether Heavenly Virtue is in the day pillar or the hour pillar?
By our lookup it cannot be in another pillar. Heavenly Virtue is read from the day stem, so a match always sits on the Day Master itself; the four-stem lookup is what puts it on the year, month or hour stems. Pillar position changes where that baseline is most visible, not whether it helps.
