Officer and Resource Generating Each Other: a weak-Day-Master pattern, not a career guarantee
Officer and Resource Generating Each Other (Guan Yin Xiang Sheng) describes a chain: Direct Officer (the element that controls the Day Master with the opposite polarity, standing for rules, position and status) feeds Resource (the element that feeds the Day Master, standing for care, study and backing), and Resource feeds the Day Master. The pressure of office passes through Resource and comes back as support. It works when the Day Master is weak. When the Day Master is already strong, the same two elements can be present, but Resource adds to the surplus and the pattern is not doing the job its name suggests. This article covers Direct Officer only; Seven Killings with Resource has its own entry.

Two real charts
Geng Zi (庚子) · Bing Xu (丙戌) · Yi Wei (乙未) · Ding Hai (丁亥) (male, Nov 3, 1960, 22:15, Beijing)
This is the pattern working: a weak Day Master, an Officer under pressure, and a Resource bridge that carries the pressure into support. True solar time was 22:16. The Day Master is Yi Wood, born in a Xu month; the main qi of Xu is Wu Earth, Direct Wealth. On the stems, Geng is Direct Officer, Bing is Hurting Officer and Ding is Eating God. The branches Zi and Hai are Resource, Xu is Direct Wealth and Wei is Indirect Wealth.
The scoring gives Output 2.5, Wealth 1.8, Resource 1.17, Officer/Killings 1.1 and Companions 0.43, and the chart is weak (support 1.6, pressure 5.4). Useful element Water (Resource), favorable Wood, unfavorable Earth and Metal. The Direct Officer's Metal is in the unfavorable column, but the year stem Geng sits on the year branch Zi: Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood, so the Officer → Resource → Day Master route is open in this chart.
The month stem Bing Hurting Officer would control Geng Direct Officer, and the Water Resource controls Bing Fire in turn, so Resource both converts the Officer and protects it. The chart starts its luck cycles at about one year old; the first two cycles, Ding Hai and Wu Zi, have Water branches Hai and Zi, which keep the bridge supplied.
Ren Yin (壬寅) · Bing Wu (丙午) · Ding Hai (丁亥) · Bing Wu (丙午) (female, Jun 18, 1962, 12:00, Beijing)
This chart has both Officer and Resource, but the chain feeds a fire that is already too strong. True solar time was 11:44. The Day Master is Ding Fire, born in a Wu month; the main qi of Wu is Ding Fire, Companion, so the month command supports the Day Master. The stems are Ren Direct Officer, Bing Rob Wealth and Bing Rob Wealth.
The branches are Yin Direct Resource, Wu Companion, Hai Direct Officer and Wu Companion. The scoring gives Companions 4.15, Officer/Killings 1.17, Output 1.05, Resource 0.63 and Wealth 0, and the chart is strong (month support; support 4.78, pressure 2.22). Useful element Water (Officer/Killings), favorable Metal and Earth, unfavorable Wood and Fire.
Ren Direct Officer and Yin Direct Resource are both present, but Officer feeding Resource and Resource feeding Fire only raises the fire further. What the chart needs is Ren Water to govern the Companions; Yin Wood Resource is in the unfavorable column. Born in midsummer, Water is also the climate adjustment. Read the two characters as “complete,” not as a beneficial chain.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Officer and Resource means a government job or an official career | It describes a relationship between elements, not a job title | 392 charts (19.6%) held both, and 52.6% of them were strong, where the pattern does not work as claimed |
| Any chart with Officer and Resource has the pattern | Only a weak Day Master makes it useful | 46.9% of the 392 were weak; in the strong group the Resource element was unfavorable 73.8% |
| A woman with Officer and Resource has a good marriage | One structure cannot settle a marriage | We read the whole chart and real life; an Officer star is not a marriage certificate |
| Officer and Resource always needs more Resource | Wealth on a stem can break the chain in a weak chart | 26.6% of the weak group had Wealth on a stem, and the Wealth element was unfavorable in 75.5% of the group |
The chain has a condition: the Day Master has to be weak
Officer and Resource is a chain with a direction: Officer feeds Resource, Resource feeds the Day Master. The image is pressure from rules or responsibility passing through care, study or a backer, and arriving as support instead of strain. That is helpful only when the Day Master is short of support.
When the Day Master is strong, the same chain feeds the surplus. Resource is the element that feeds the Day Master, so more Resource makes a full chart fuller. The Officer may still be welcome because it controls Companions, but the Resource half is working against the chart. Calling that “Officer and Resource Generating Each Other works well” gets the direction wrong.
How common it is: 392 charts hold both, and over half are strong
Direct Officer appeared on a stem in 521 charts, and 392 of those also had Resource on a stem or as a branch's main qi. That is 19.6% of the 2,000 charts we cast. “Officer plus Resource exists” is not rare.
Among those 392, 46.9% were weak (184 charts), 52.6% were strong (206) and 2 were balanced. More than half of the group fails the condition that makes the chain useful. Seeing the two Ten Gods together is the start of the question, not the answer.
In a weak chart: Resource is useful, and Wealth can break the chain
In the 184 weak charts, Resource was the Useful element 85.3% of the time and Companions 14.7%; the Resource element was useful or favorable in 100% of them. That is the pattern at its cleanest: the Officer's pressure needs Resource to convert it, and Resource is exactly what a weak Day Master wants.
The Direct Officer element itself was still unfavorable in 43.5% of these charts. The chain does not make the Officer harmless; it gives the pressure a route. Wealth is the weak point because Wealth controls Resource. Wealth sat on a stem in 26.6% of the weak group, and the Wealth element was unfavorable in 75.5% of the group, since it can cut the chain.
In a strong chart: Officer is welcome, Resource is the problem
In the 206 strong charts, the Resource element was unfavorable in 73.8%, while the Direct Officer element was useful or favorable in 93.7%. The two characters are present, but their jobs are reversed. The chart wants the Officer to govern the surplus, not Resource to feed it.
Their Useful elements split into Officer/Killings 41.3%, Wealth 31.1% and Output 27.7%. That is the ordinary strong-chart direction: control, spend and drain. A strong chart with Officer and Resource is better described as “both are complete” than as “the two generate each other into something good.”
Both on the stems, or no Resource at all: two edges to watch
When both Direct Officer and Resource are exposed on stems, the group is 215 charts, 10.8% of the total, and only 50.7% of them are weak. Being visible on the stems does not strengthen the condition. Placement tells you where the theme shows, not whether it helps.
At the other edge, 129 charts had Direct Officer on a stem and no Resource anywhere. Of those, 71.3% were weak, and 92.4% of the weak ones took Resource as the Useful element. Without Resource in the natal chart, the Officer presses directly and the chart waits for a Resource luck cycle. Separately, 18.6% of the Officer-and-Resource charts also exposed Seven Killings on a stem; that is the mixed Officer/Killings question, handled elsewhere.
Data: how often Officer and Resource actually helps
Direct Officer appeared on a stem in 521 charts; 392 of those (19.6% of the 2,000) also had Resource on a stem or as a branch's main qi. That is the group usually called Officer and Resource.
The group splits into 184 weak charts (46.9%), 206 strong charts (52.6%) and 2 balanced charts. The strong half is the reason a sighting of both Ten Gods cannot be read as the helpful pattern.
In the 184 weak charts, Resource was Useful 85.3% of the time and Companions 14.7%, and the Resource element was useful or favorable in 100%; the Direct Officer element was still unfavorable in 43.5%. Wealth sat on a stem in 26.6%, and the Wealth element was unfavorable in 75.5% of the group because it can control Resource and break the chain.
In the 206 strong charts, the Resource element was unfavorable in 73.8% and the Direct Officer element was useful or favorable in 93.7%; Useful elements were Officer/Killings 41.3%, Wealth 31.1% and Output 27.7%. Both Officer and Resource were on stems in 215 charts (10.8%), with only 50.7% weak; 129 charts had Direct Officer but no Resource, 71.3% of them weak, and 92.4% of those weak charts took Resource as Useful. Seven Killings also appeared on a stem in 18.6% of the Officer-and-Resource charts, and 53.2% of all non-special charts were weak.
Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Officer and Resource charts were those with Direct Officer on a stem and Resource on a stem or as a branch's main qi; the group was split by strength, and the Useful element and the Officer, Resource and Wealth elements were tallied inside each half. Special structures are excluded. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.
FAQ
Does Officer and Resource mean I will get a government job?
No. It describes Officer pressure passing through Resource and coming back as support. That can show up as study, credentials, a backer or a structured workplace, but it is not a job assignment. In the 2,000 charts we cast, 392 held both and 52.6% of those were actually strong, where the pattern is not doing its named job. Career depends on the whole chart, your skills and real chances.
A woman with Officer and Resource is said to have a good marriage. Is that true?
Not from that one structure. Officer stands for rules, position and status, and in a traditional reading it can also stand for the husband star, but a marriage is never decided by one character. It depends on the two people, their circumstances and the whole chart. We would not tell anyone their marriage is good or bad from Officer and Resource alone.
My chart has Officer and Resource, but my Day Master is strong. What then?
Then the label is “Officer and Resource complete,” not a helpful chain. In strong charts the Resource element was unfavorable 73.8% of the time, while Direct Officer was useful or favorable 93.7%; the chart wants the Officer to govern Companions and Wealth to check Resource. Adding more Resource would make the surplus bigger, so read strength before using the phrase.
Will a Wealth luck cycle ruin Officer and Resource?
Not automatically. Wealth can control Resource, and in the weak group the Wealth element was unfavorable 75.5%, and Wealth on a stem appeared 26.6%, so a Wealth cycle deserves attention. But a luck cycle also brings its own branches and combinations, and another cycle may supply Resource instead. Look at the whole cycle and the natal chart, not at the word “Wealth” alone.
Common mistakes
- Officer and Resource means an official career: the pattern describes pressure converted into support; 392 charts held both and 52.6% were strong, so it is not a job guarantee.
- Every chart with both Ten Gods has the helpful pattern: only 46.9% of the 392 were weak, and in the strong half Resource was unfavorable 73.8%.
- A woman with Officer and Resource is bound to marry well: a marriage cannot be read from one structure; the whole chart and the two people matter.
- More Resource always improves the pattern: in weak charts Wealth appeared on a stem 26.6% of the time and the Wealth element was unfavorable 75.5%, because Wealth can cut Resource off.
