Hurting Officer producing Wealth: strength first, then a place for it to land
Hurting Officer producing Wealth (shang guan sheng cai) is a downhill chain. A strong Day Master, the day stem that stands for you, has energy to spare; Hurting Officer, the element it produces with opposite polarity, lets that surplus out; Wealth, the element the Day Master controls, catches it. Skill turns into results. The chain needs a strong Day Master. A weak one running it is leaking energy while carrying a load.

At a glance
| Setup | Role of Wealth | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Strong + Hurting Officer on a stem + Wealth present | Favorable (100% in our data) | The textbook chain; both are usable |
| Strong + Hurting Officer on a stem + no Wealth | The missing piece | Wealth is the most common Useful God (48.6%); luck can supply it |
| Strong + Wealth + plenty of Peers | Hurting Officer is the bridge | Peers feed Hurting Officer first, which then feeds Wealth |
| Weak + Hurting Officer on a stem + Wealth present | Usually unfavorable (72.6%) | Switch to Resource or Peer support instead |
- Hurting Officer
- What the Day Master produces, opposite polarity; e.g. Jia Wood seeing Ding Fire
- Wealth
- What the Day Master controls; e.g. Jia Wood seeing Wu or Ji Earth
- The route
- Day Master → Hurting Officer → Wealth
- Mirror case
- A weak chart reins Hurting Officer in with Resource instead
What does the chain actually do?
Energy leaves the Day Master, passes through Hurting Officer and lands as Wealth. Hurting Officer is craft, voice, ideas that don't follow the script. Wealth is the tangible result, plus the people and things you get to manage. Ideas without Wealth rarely land; Wealth without Hurting Officer has no bridge to you.
Three things make it run: a Day Master strong enough to spend energy; a Hurting Officer with weight, ideally on a visible stem; and Wealth with roots to catch what arrives. People skip the first one most often.
Why does it have to be a strong chart?
For a weak Day Master, both pieces cost energy. Hurting Officer drains you and Wealth makes you work to control it; both sit on the pressure side. A strong chart can afford that. A weak one is already short.
The split is stark. In the 150 strong charts with Hurting Officer on a stem and Wealth present, Wealth was favorable 100% of the time and Hurting Officer 96.0%. In the 241 weak ones, Wealth was unfavorable 72.6% of the time, Hurting Officer 59.3%, and 70.1% took Resource as the Useful God. Same name, opposite verdict.
Lots of Peers: will they grab the Wealth?
With Hurting Officer in between, Peers feed it before they ever reach the money. Peers, the elements matching the Day Master, are dangerous when they face Wealth directly. Put Hurting Officer in the middle and their energy flows into it, then on into Wealth. A crowd splitting the money becomes a crowd doing the work.
In our data, 121 strong charts held Wealth and Peers together. Peers were unfavorable in 90.9% of them, yet Hurting Officer stayed favorable in 97.5%. Weaken or knock out Hurting Officer and the bridge goes; that's when competition over Wealth shows up.
No Wealth in the chart: is Hurting Officer wasted?
Not wasted, just without a landing spot, and often waiting on luck. Without Wealth, Hurting Officer tends to read as clever, articulate and full of ideas that don't convert. Among 70 strong charts with Hurting Officer on a stem and no Wealth, 48.6% took Wealth as the Useful God and all of them listed it as favorable.
In practice, Wealth years make it easier to cash in what you can do. Between them, building one craft deeply beats trying everything.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hurting Officer plus Wealth is always this pattern | Strong first; when weak, Wealth is usually unfavorable | 72.6% of weak charts with this setup list Wealth as unfavorable |
| The Useful God must be Wealth | Wealth is favorable; the Useful God is whatever is scarcest | Only 30.7% of these charts use Wealth; 38.0% use Officer/Killings |
| Many Peers mean your money gets taken | Hurting Officer redirects Peers | With Peers present, Hurting Officer is still favorable in 97.5% |
| No Wealth, so Hurting Officer is wasted | Still favorable, just without a landing spot | 48.6% of strong charts without Wealth take it as the Useful God |
Two real charts
Yi Mao · Xin Si · Ding Mao · Wu Shen (male, 21 May 1975, 15:45, Beijing)
Ding Fire born in a Si month. Si's main qi is Bing Fire, Ding's Rob Wealth, so the month supports the Day Master and we rate it strong (support 3.2, pressure 3.8; the score leans slightly against, but a supporting month decides it). Wu Earth on the hour stem is Hurting Officer and sits on Shen Metal, Direct Wealth; Xin Metal on the month stem is Indirect Wealth. Yi Wood on the year stem and both Mao branches are Indirect Resource.
Metal (Wealth) is the Useful God, Water and Earth favorable, Fire unfavorable. Hurting Officer and Wealth are both on the right side: Wu Earth draws off Ding's surplus and feeds the Shen Metal right under it, a whole chain inside one pillar. The Si month branch (Rob Wealth) combines with Shen, so a Peer sits close to Wealth, but Wu Earth catches the Fire first and passes it on. Plenty of Wood could choke the Earth; Xin Metal on a stem keeps Yi Wood in check, and since summer calls for Wood we don't list it as unfavorable. Reading: turning craft and output into results comes fairly naturally; Fire-heavy years bring more spending and competition.
Geng Shen · Wu Zi · Ji Mao · Ren Shen (female, 1 Jan 1981, 16:00, Beijing)
Ji Earth born in a Zi month. The month is Water, Ji's Wealth, and gives no support; we rate it weak (support 1.15, pressure 5.85). Geng Metal on the year stem and both Shen branches are Hurting Officer, Ren Water on the hour stem is Direct Wealth and Zi is Indirect Wealth. Metal feeding Water looks like the full chain.
But the Day Master is too weak. There's no Fire (Resource) at all, and only Wu Earth on the month stem helps. Fire is the Useful God, Earth favorable, Metal and Water unfavorable, so Hurting Officer and Wealth both land on the wrong side. This chart isn't missing a route to money; it's missing Resource, and Fire luck would both feed it and rein in the Metal. Reading: plenty of ideas and openings, too much to carry alone. Get backing and solid ground first; money can wait.
Data: how often the chain appears, and whether Wealth always helps
Leaving out special patterns, 521 of 2,000 charts have Hurting Officer on a stem; 220 of those are strong, and 150 of the strong ones also hold Wealth (7.5% of all charts). In those 150, Wealth was favorable 100% of the time and Hurting Officer 96.0%; both were favorable together in 96.0%.
Wealth isn't always the Useful God. Those 150 charts split Officer/Killings 38.0%, output 31.3%, Wealth 30.7%. Wealth helps; which element leads depends on what's scarcest and strongest.
Among 241 weak charts with Hurting Officer on a stem and Wealth present, Wealth was unfavorable 72.6% of the time and Hurting Officer 59.3%; Useful Gods were Resource 70.1% and Peers 29.5%.
Statistics: 2,000 birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time). “Wealth present” means Direct or Indirect Wealth on the year, month or hour stem, or as main qi of any branch.
Common mistakes
- It guarantees a fortune: it says your energy has an outlet; how much money follows depends on rooted Wealth and timing.
- Weak charts can run it too: among weak charts with this setup, 72.6% list Wealth as unfavorable. Build support first.
- These people can't hold a job: Hurting Officer is expression and craft, just as useful inside a company.
FAQ
My chart has Hurting Officer producing Wealth. Should I start my own business?
Either path can suit you. The chain says your skills have a place to cash in, so work where output turns straight into results (craft, content, sales, technical services) feels natural. Employment versus a business depends on your luck cycles, circumstances and appetite for swings, not on this one structure.
Is a woman with Hurting Officer producing Wealth bad news for marriage?
No. Hurting Officer gets blamed for friction with partners in women's charts, but here its energy flows into Wealth rather than straight at the Officer star. Whether a relationship goes well depends on the day branch, how the Officer star sits and how two people get along.
I have this pattern but can't seem to save money. Why?
Check whether you're in Peer or Resource years: more Peers split the money, more Resource squeezes Hurting Officer, and a narrower outlet makes income and spending erratic. Saving also comes down to habits and industry cycles; the chart can only flag which years call for caution.
Hurting Officer vs Eating God producing Wealth: what's the difference?
Same route, different temperament. Eating God, what the Day Master produces with the same polarity, is gentler and steadier; Hurting Officer is sharper and more about breaking moulds and personal skill. Which works better depends on strength and the rest of the chart, not rank.
