Wealth Breaking Seal (Cai Po Yin): the structure is easy to spot, the reading is not

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-23

Wealth Breaking Seal (财破印, Cai Po Yin) describes Wealth and Resource appearing together in a controlling relationship: Wealth controls Resource. The structure discussed here is narrower than “both are present.” A Direct Wealth or Indirect Wealth stem must appear on a heavenly stem, and the chart must also contain a Direct Resource or Indirect Resource, either on a stem or inside a branch's hidden stems. Charts read by a special structure rather than ordinary support and pressure are excluded. The reading still follows support and pressure: a weak Day Master wants Resource, so Wealth is usually the problem; a strong Day Master wants Wealth, so Resource often becomes the problem instead.

YunWhen Wealth shows on a stem and a Seal is also present, ask strong or weak before ranking Wealth against Seal.

Two real charts

Ren Shen (壬申) · Gui Mao (癸卯) · Ji You (己酉) · Geng Wu (庚午) (female, Apr 3, 1992, 12:00, Beijing)

This is a weak chart that needs Resource, and two Wealth stems press on the seal. True solar time was 11:42. The birth came after the Vernal Equinox, so the month pillar is Gui Mao. The Day Master is Ji Earth, born in a Mao month; mid-spring Wood is in command and Earth is out of season.

Wealth is on the stems while the seal hides in the branches. The stems are Ren Direct Wealth, Gui Indirect Wealth and Geng Hurting Officer. The branch main qi are Shen Eating God, Mao Seven Killings, You Direct Resource and Wu Direct Resource. The seal sits in the You and Wu branches and does not appear on a stem. Officer/Killings, Wealth and Output all carry weight; support 1.05 against pressure 5.95 makes the chart weak by points.

The Useful element is Earth, favorable Fire, unfavorable Water. Two visible Wealth stems press on a weak Day Master that needs Resource and Companions. Wealth is on the unfavorable side, which is exactly where Wealth Breaking Seal deserves care. The seal is not gone; it is being drained while the Day Master is already weak.

Yi Si (乙巳) · Wu Zi (戊子) · Xin Chou (辛丑) · Ji Chou (己丑) (male, Dec 13, 1965, 02:30, Beijing)

This is a strong chart that welcomes Wealth, and heavy Resource should be checked by it. True solar time was 02:20. The birth came after Major Snow, so the month pillar is Wu Zi. The Day Master is Xin Metal, born in a Zi month.

Wealth and seal both sit on the stems, and the seal is heavier. The stems are Yi Indirect Wealth, Wu Direct Resource and Ji Indirect Resource. The branches are Si Direct Officer, Zi Hurting Officer, Chou Direct Resource and Chou Direct Resource. Support 3.6 against pressure 3.4 makes the chart strong by points.

The Useful element is Fire, favorable Wood and Water, unfavorable Earth. A strong Day Master needs control, drain or spend. Yi Wood Indirect Wealth is favorable, while the Earth seals are unfavorable. This is not a case of protecting the seal; the seal is heavy and should be checked by Wealth, the reverse of the weak-chart reading.

The structure first: Wealth on a stem, a seal somewhere in the chart

Wealth Breaking Seal is not triggered by simply seeing Wealth and Resource; the word “visible” does the first filtering. A Direct Wealth or Indirect Wealth must appear on a heavenly stem, and the chart must also contain Direct Resource or Indirect Resource. The seal can be on a stem or inside a branch; hidden stems count.

In 2,000 non-special charts, 689 fit this structure, 34.5%. That is not a rare combination; it comes up often in ordinary chart reading.

Both Wealth and the seal were on stems in 398 charts, 57.8% of the structure and 19.9% of all charts. The remaining 42.2% had Wealth on a stem while the seal sat only in branches.

The internal mix is worth a look too. Direct Wealth appeared in 57% and Indirect Wealth in 54.1%; Direct Resource in 60.7% and Indirect Resource in 67.3%. One chart can carry both Wealth types and both Resource types.

Weak chart: the seal is favorable, Wealth is usually trouble

In a weak chart the seal is a helper, and Wealth pressing on it is pressure. Of the 689 charts, 319 were weak, 46.3%. Among those 319, Resource was the Useful element in 68.3% and Companions in 31.7%.

The seal's element was favorable in 100%, and Wealth was unfavorable in 73%. The numbers are blunt: a weak Day Master needs the seal, and the seal never fell on the unfavorable side.

On the other side, the seal was unfavorable in 0% and Wealth was favorable in 1.9%. Wealth almost never helps in these charts; the rare favorable case is not the main line.

So Wealth Breaking Seal in a weak chart means Wealth draining the seal and the Day Master. The seal is not erased. The side that should be reinforced is being pulled by Wealth. The Useful element still comes from Resource and Companions first.

Strong chart: Wealth is favorable, the seal is often unfavorable

In a strong chart the direction turns: Wealth helps, and excess Resource needs to be checked. Of the 689 charts, 369 were strong, 53.6%. Their Useful element was Officer/Killings in 39.6%, Output in 32% and Wealth in 28.5%.

In those 369 charts, Wealth's element was favorable in 100%, and the seal was unfavorable in 77.5%. Wealth controlling the seal is not a bad outcome in this direction; it presses down excess Resource.

The seal was favorable in 0%, and Wealth was unfavorable in 0%. The two classifications are almost a mirror image of the weak-chart group.

So the same name reads in opposite ways depending on strength. A weak chart fears Wealth draining the seal; a strong chart wants Wealth to check it. Memorising “Wealth Breaking Seal is bad” without judging strength first will produce the wrong reading.

Two counts: do not call every chart with both points a break

A loose count that asks only for Wealth points and seal points together is too broad to be useful. That count reaches 1,713 charts, 85.7% of the non-special set. Almost everyone has some Wealth and some Resource, which is not what “breaking” means.

The main structure here is narrower: Wealth on a stem and a seal somewhere in the chart. That gives 689 charts, 34.5%, a group small enough to discuss.

The two counts are far apart and their conclusions cannot be mixed. When someone says your chart has Wealth Breaking Seal, ask which count they used.

Within the structure, 46.3% were weak and 53.6% strong. Among all non-special charts, 53.2% were weak, so the structure is not especially weak. Wealth Breaking Seal cannot be equated with a weak Day Master.

Data: 689 Wealth Breaking Seal charts, weak and strong

Among 2,000 non-special charts, 689, 34.5%, had Wealth on a stem and a seal somewhere in the chart. Of those, 319 were weak, 46.3%, and 369 strong, 53.6%.

Weak group: Resource was Useful in 68.3% and Companions in 31.7%. The seal's element was favorable in 100% and unfavorable in 0%; Wealth was unfavorable in 73% and favorable in 1.9%.

Strong group: Officer/Killings was Useful in 39.6%, Output in 32% and Wealth in 28.5%. Wealth's element was favorable in 100% and unfavorable in 0%; the seal was unfavorable in 77.5% and favorable in 0%.

Wealth and seal both on stems: 398 charts, 19.9% of all and 57.8% of the structure, with 50.8% of that group weak. The seal was only in branches in 42.2%. The loose count reached 1,713 charts, 85.7%, which is not the same group as the 34.5%. Direct Wealth appeared in 57% and Indirect Wealth in 54.1%; Direct Resource in 60.7% and Indirect Resource in 67.3%. Weak charts made up 53.2% of all non-special charts.

Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Wealth Breaking Seal was counted when a Direct Wealth or Indirect Wealth stem was visible and a Direct Resource or Indirect Resource was present, including inside hidden stems, with special structures excluded. Strength follows this site's scoring, and the loose count asks only whether both Wealth points and seal points exist. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.

FAQ

What does Wealth Breaking Seal mean in BaZi?

It describes Wealth and Resource appearing together in a controlling relationship, Wealth over Resource. The structure here requires a Direct Wealth or Indirect Wealth on a heavenly stem and a Direct Resource or Indirect Resource somewhere in the chart, including hidden stems. Special structures are excluded, and the reading still begins with Day Master strength.

Does Wealth Breaking Seal mean poor academic performance?

One structure cannot decide that. In weak charts the seal was favorable in 100% of cases; it is still present, just under pressure from Wealth. School performance also depends on where the seal sits, how the rest of the chart supports it and the student's actual effort. One factor cannot decide it.

What should a strong chart do with Wealth Breaking Seal?

A strong chart welcomes Wealth, and Wealth controlling the seal is often helpful in that direction. Among 369 strong charts, Wealth's element was favorable in 100% and the seal was unfavorable in 77.5%. The Useful element still follows support and pressure: Officer/Killings, Output and Wealth come first, not protection of the seal.

Does Wealth on a stem with the seal only in a branch still count?

Yes, a seal in hidden stems counts as present here; 42.2% of the structure had the seal only in branches. But strength still comes first: a weak chart needs the seal and feels Wealth as pressure, while a strong chart welcomes Wealth and may want excess Resource checked.

Yun's tipIf weak, Seal is usually favorable and Wealth often unfavorable; if strong, the reading flips.
