Bian: a reference pillar built from the hour stem and hour branch
Bian (变) is one extra pillar in the traditional appendix, built beside the four natal pillars. Take the hour stem and find its Five Combination partner (五合, Wu He: the fixed stem pair that combines, such as Jia–Ji or Bing–Xin). Take the hour branch and find its Six Combination partner (六合, Liu He: the fixed branch pair, such as Zi–Chou or Wu–Wei). Join those two partners into a new stem and branch. The recipe is the same as Embryonic Breath (胎息, Tai Xi), which starts from the day stem and day branch instead. Our site lists Bian in the traditional appendix as reference only; it does not enter strength, the Useful element or favorability.

Data: 1,898 non-special charts and their Bian pillars
Bian stem: Useful 20.6%, favorable 34.6%, unfavorable 33.4%. Bian branch: Useful 22.8%, favorable 32.1%, unfavorable 32.9%. The count covers 1,898 non-special charts, and the built pillar matched the site's traditional appendix on all 1,898, 100%.
At least one side was favorable in 77.9%, and both sides were unfavorable in 11.6%. Most charts do not have both sides against them, so Bian cannot be treated as a bad character by default.
Bian brought an element absent from the natal chart in 6.8%, 129 charts; 74.4% of those new elements were favorable. The Bian branch was already present in 23.2%, the Bian stem in 27.1%, and a Bian branch clashed a natal branch in 23.6%.
Bian matched Embryonic Breath in 1.6%, 30 charts, and Fetal Origin in 1.7%. Each pillar is calculated on its own, and exact overlap is a minority.
Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Bian was built from the hour stem's Five Combination and the hour branch's Six Combination; the count excludes special structures, leaving 1,898 charts. Favorability follows this site's lists for the Bian stem and branch elements, with the natal chart taken without Luck Pillars or annual pillars. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.
The recipe: one combination for the stem, one for the branch
Bian is assembled in two steps, and the stem and branch do not depend on each other. The hour stem takes its Five Combination partner: Jia with Ji, Yi with Geng, Bing with Xin, Ding with Ren, Wu with Gui. The hour branch takes its Six Combination partner: Zi with Chou, Yin with Hai, Mao with Xu, Chen with You, Si with Shen, Wu with Wei.
Take a Bing Wu hour. Bing combines with Xin, Wu combines with Wei, so the Bian pillar is Xin Wei. Reverse the starting hour and the same rule returns Bing Wu.
The recipe matches Embryonic Breath, but the starting point differs. Embryonic Breath starts from the day stem and day branch; Bian starts from the hour stem and hour branch. Each is built on its own and neither replaces the other.
Our site keeps Bian in the traditional appendix. It sits beside Fetal Origin and Embryonic Breath, as reference only, outside strength and favorability.
Favorability: count the stem and branch separately, then together
The Bian stem and the Bian branch each go back into the natal chart's favorable lists. Among 1,898 non-special charts, the Bian stem was the Useful element in 20.6%, favorable in 34.6% and unfavorable in 33.4%; the Bian branch was the Useful element in 22.8%, favorable in 32.1% and unfavorable in 32.9%.
Separately, neither side is lopsided. So hearing the word Bian is no reason to assume a helper or a problem.
Together, most charts have at least one side on the favorable list. At least one side was Useful or favorable in 77.9%, and only 11.6% had both sides unfavorable.
That is what reference pillar means here. Bian offers a second set of characters to compare against the natal chart. It is not another chart, and it cannot override the support-and-pressure conclusion.
A new element is a clue, not a supplement
Bian brings an element the natal chart lacks only in a minority of cases. Just 129 of 1,898 charts, 6.8%, did so. In most charts, Bian's elements were already present somewhere in the four pillars.
Even a new element is not automatically usable. In those 129 charts, 74.4% of the new elements were favorable, while the rest were unfavorable or neutral.
So “fill whatever Bian is missing” does not follow. First ask whether that element is what the chart needs, then ask whether the chart truly lacks it. Adding an element that is not needed solves nothing.
A new element is at most a hint. It suggests a direction worth checking, but the Useful element still comes from support and pressure, with climate adjustment as a supplement.
Bian, Embryonic Breath and Fetal Origin: three separate pillars
They are parallel pillars, not aliases of one pillar. Bian starts from the hour pillar, Embryonic Breath from the day pillar, and Fetal Origin from the birth month. Different starting points usually give different results.
An exact match is rare. Bian matched Embryonic Breath exactly in only 1.6%, 30 charts, and Fetal Origin in 1.7%.
So it is normal for two of the three to differ. Do not apply an Embryonic Breath conclusion to Bian, and do not treat a rare match as extra evidence.
All three remain reference. Read each on its own, then return to the natal chart's Day Master strength and favorable elements.
Clashes and repeats: reminders, not omens
Bian's characters often already appear in the natal chart. The Bian branch was already present in 23.2% and the Bian stem in 27.1%. Repetition does not strengthen the character, and it does not cancel it either.
A Bian branch clashes a natal branch in 23.6% of charts. A clash is a reminder that two branches pull in opposite directions; it does not guarantee an event.
Before reading the clash, check whether the elements involved are favorable. A favorable element being clashed and an unfavorable element being clashed are different stories. Reading a clash without favorability turns a reference pillar into a verdict.
In one sentence: Bian is an appendix, not the main character. The main reading still comes from natal strength, the Useful element and climate adjustment.
Two real charts
Ren Yin (壬寅) · Jia Chen (甲辰) · Ren Chen (壬辰) · Bing Wu (丙午) (male, Apr 24, 1962, 11:45, Beijing)
Here Bian supplies Metal, an element the natal chart lacks, and Metal is exactly the Useful element. True solar time was 11:32. The birth came after Grain Rain, so the month pillar is Jia Chen. The Day Master is Ren Water, born in a Chen month.
The hour pillar is Bing Wu, so Bian is Xin Wei. Bing combines with Xin and Wu combines with Wei. The stems are Ren Companion at the year, Jia Eating God at the month and Bing Indirect Wealth at the hour. The branches are Yin, Chen, Chen and Wu. No Metal appears among the stems or hidden stems, and the Bian stem Xin brings it. Embryonic Breath is Ding You and Fetal Origin is Yi Wei; both differ from Bian. Support 0.8 against pressure 6.2 makes the chart weak by points.
The Useful element is Metal, favorable Water, unfavorable Earth and Fire. Bian offers a clue to the missing Useful element, but it stays an appendix. The main conclusion comes from support and pressure. Metal on Bian does not make Metal the only answer.
Ji Si (己巳) · Xin Wei (辛未) · Jia Shen (甲申) · Xin Wei (辛未) (female, Jul 23, 1989, 14:30, Beijing)
Here both characters of Bian are Fire, and Fire is unfavorable. True solar time was 14:09. The birth came after Major Heat, so the month pillar is Xin Wei. The Day Master is Jia Wood, born in a Wei month.
The hour pillar is Xin Wei, so Bian is Bing Wu. Xin combines with Bing and Wei combines with Wu. The stems are Ji Direct Wealth at the year, Xin Direct Officer at the month and Xin Direct Officer at the hour. The branches are Si, Wei, Shen and Wei. Bing and Wu are both Fire, and Fire is on the unfavorable side. Embryonic Breath is Ji Si, different from Bian. Support 0.6 against pressure 6.4 makes the chart weak by points.
The Useful element is Water, favorable Wood, unfavorable Earth and Fire. When Bian lands on the unfavorable side, do not build a separate reading around it. The main conclusion is still a weak Day Master taking Water and Wood; Bian is only a reminder.
FAQ
What is Bian in BaZi?
Bian is one reference pillar in the traditional appendix. Its stem is the Five Combination partner of the hour stem, and its branch is the Six Combination partner of the hour branch. The recipe is like Embryonic Breath but starts from the hour pillar. It is reference only and does not enter strength or favorability.
How are Bian, Embryonic Breath and Fetal Origin different?
Bian starts from the hour stem and hour branch, Embryonic Breath from the day stem and day branch, and Fetal Origin from the birth month. In 2,000 charts, Bian matched Embryonic Breath in only 1.6% and Fetal Origin in 1.7%. The three are calculated separately and cannot substitute for one another.
Should I supplement the element Bian is missing?
Check favorability, not just absence. Bian brought an element missing from the natal chart in only 6.8% of charts, and 74.4% of those new elements were favorable. If the element is not needed, adding it does not solve anything.
Does a Bian pillar mean my personality will change?
An appendix pillar cannot describe a personality. Bian is assembled from fixed stem and branch combinations and does not enter strength or favorability. Personality comes from the whole chart and from lived experience, not from one factor.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bian can change fate and is more accurate than the natal chart | It is only an appendix reference | Both sides were unfavorable in just 11.6%, and most charts had at least one side not against them |
| Bian and Embryonic Breath are the same thing | The recipe is similar, the starting point is not | They matched exactly in only 1.6% |
| Any new element from Bian must be supplemented | First check whether it is favorable | 74.4% of new elements were favorable, not all of them |
| A Bian clash with the natal chart is a bad sign | A clash is only a reminder | A Bian branch clashed a natal branch in 23.6% |
Common mistakes
- Bian can change fate and outranks the natal chart: it is one reference pillar in the traditional appendix. Both sides were unfavorable in only 11.6%, and it cannot override natal support and pressure.
- Bian and Embryonic Breath are the same: the recipes match, but one starts from the hour pillar and the other from the day pillar. They matched exactly in only 1.6%, so they cannot be read as one.
- Every new element Bian brings must be added: check favorability first. Only 74.4% of new elements were favorable, so “fill every gap” easily fills the wrong one.
- A Bian clash means trouble: a clash is a reminder, and a Bian branch clashed a natal branch in 23.6%. The next question is whether the clashed element is favorable or unfavorable.
