Minor Luck (Xiao Yun): a yearly pair that fills the years before Luck Pillars

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-22

Minor Luck (Xiao Yun) is a stem-branch pair that changes once every year of age, counted from the hour pillar. In a yang year (year stem Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng or Ren) a male birth goes forward, and a yin year female birth also goes forward; the opposite cases go backward. The direction is the same rule as the Luck Pillar. Each year of age moves one pair. Our site lists the Minor Luck for the Annual Pillar you select in the “Life Palace, conception pillar and Growth tables” of the chart result, with age counted as nominal age (age 1 in the birth year, one year added at each Li Chun, the Start of Spring). Traditionally it is said that before the start of Luck Pillars there is no Luck Pillar yet, so Minor Luck fills that gap. Our view: Minor Luck is listed for reference and is not used to judge fortune. For those years, read the natal chart and the Annual Pillar.

Two real charts

Ren Zi (壬子) · Geng Xu (庚戌) · Wu Yin (戊寅) · Ji Wei (己未) (male, Oct 14, 1972, 13:15, Beijing)

This is a late start: eight full years pass before the first Luck Pillar, so Minor Luck covers the whole early childhood. True solar time was 13:15. The Day Master is Wu Earth, born in a Xu month; the main qi of Xu is Wu Earth, Companion, so the month command supports the Day Master. The stems are Ren Indirect Wealth, Geng Eating God and Ji Rob Wealth. The branches are Zi Direct Wealth, Xu Companion, Yin Seven Killings and Wei Rob Wealth.

The scoring gives Companions 2.9, Output 1.6, Wealth 1, Resource 0.8 and Officer/Killings 0.7, and the chart is strong (month support; support 3.7, pressure 3.3). Useful element Metal (Output), favorable Wood and Water, unfavorable Earth and Fire. The year stem Ren is yang and the birth is male, so the direction is forward. The first Luck Pillar starts 8 years 0 months 11 days after birth, on Oct 26, 1980: Xin Hai.

The Minor Luck series runs forward from the hour pillar Ji Wei. Age 1 is Geng Shen, 2 Xin You, 3 Ren Xu, 4 Gui Hai, 5 Jia Zi, 6 Yi Chou, 7 Bing Yin and 8 Ding Mao; at age 9, the year the Luck Pillar starts, it is Wu Chen. Read by stem, the first two years are Metal, the Useful element, the middle four are Water and Wood, favorable, and ages 7 and 8 are Bing and Ding Fire, unfavorable. That is the way many people use Minor Luck for childhood. Our site does not read it that way: for these years it uses the natal chart and each Annual Pillar, and lists the Minor Luck only in the appendix.

Wu Xu (戊戌) · Ding Si (丁巳) · Ji Hai (己亥) · Geng Wu (庚午) (female, May 22, 1958, 13:00, Beijing)

This chart starts earlier, so Minor Luck covers only five years. True solar time was 12:49. The Day Master is Ji Earth, born in a Si month; the main qi of Si is Bing Fire, Direct Resource, so the month command supports the Day Master. The stems are Wu Rob Wealth, Ding Indirect Resource and Geng Hurting Officer. The branches are Xu Rob Wealth, Si Direct Resource, Hai Direct Wealth and Wu Indirect Resource. The chart has a Si–Hai clash.

The scoring gives Resource 2.92, Output 1.75, Companions 1.33, Wealth 0.67 and Officer/Killings 0.33, and the chart is strong (month support; support 4.25, pressure 2.75). Useful element Water (Wealth), favorable Metal and Wood, unfavorable Fire. The year stem Wu is yang and the birth is female, so the direction is backward. The first Luck Pillar starts 5 years 4 months 19 days after birth, on Oct 12, 1963: Bing Chen.

The two layers move backward from different starting points. The Luck Pillar counts back from the month pillar Ding Si, and the Minor Luck counts back from the hour pillar Geng Wu. Age 1 is Ji Si, 2 Wu Chen, 3 Ding Mao, 4 Bing Yin and 5 Yi Chou; at age 6, the year the Luck Pillar starts, it is Jia Zi. The only-Minor-Luck years here are ages 1 to 5, three fewer than in the first example. The earlier the first Luck Pillar starts, the less this layer is used.

The rule: start at the hour pillar and move one pair a year

Minor Luck is the simplest moving layer in the chart: it starts at the hour pillar and shifts one pair for every year of age. A yang year with a male birth, and a yin year with a female birth, move forward. The other two cases move backward. That is the same direction rule as the Luck Pillar.

Age is nominal age: 1 in the birth year, plus one at each Li Chun (Start of Spring). Our site lists the Minor Luck for the year you select in the “Life Palace, conception pillar and Growth tables”. In all 2,000 charts, the direction matched the Luck Pillar's direction, 100%.

The gap before Luck Pillars varies from zero to ten years

The number of years when Minor Luck is the only moving layer depends on when the first Luck Pillar starts. The average is 5.13 years. In 4.7% of charts the first Luck Pillar starts in the birth year, so there are 0 such years; 23.7% have 2 years or less, and 26.1% have 8 years or more.

The distribution is wide, not a fixed childhood block. By nominal age the shares run from 4.7% at 0 years to 12.2% at 5 years. By actual start time, 21.6% of charts start Luck Pillars 8 or more years after birth.

Minor Luck and the first Luck Pillar point the same way on elements

If Minor Luck carried a special message, its favorable share should differ from the first Luck Pillar's. It does not. Across 9719 Minor Luck years in the 1898 non-special charts, the Minor Luck stem element was favorable or useful 53.1% and unfavorable 33.1%; the first Luck Pillar stem was favorable or useful 53.2% and unfavorable 32.7%.

That near match suggests the stem is simply carried along by the stem-branch rotation. The Useful element was the Minor Luck stem in 20.5% of those years. Nothing in the pair marks it as a separate influence.

Why we list it and do not judge with it

Luck Pillars have a personal starting point; Minor Luck does not. The start of Luck Pillars is counted from the birth month to the next or previous solar term, so the number of days differs for every chart. Minor Luck ignores the month, the day and the solar terms: it reads only the hour pillar and the direction.

A coarse rule makes a poor judge of a year. A year already carries the natal chart, the Luck Pillar and the Annual Pillar. Adding Minor Luck on top would give three moving layers with different levels of precision. We list it in the appendix and leave the reading to the other layers.

There is one more overlap worth knowing. In 160 charts, 8%, a year before the first Luck Pillar had a Minor Luck pair identical to the first Luck Pillar itself. That is another sign that the pair is a rotation, not a separate voice.

What to read in those early years instead

Before the first Luck Pillar, read the natal chart and the Annual Pillar. The natal chart gives the Day Master's strength and the Useful element; the Annual Pillar gives the stems and branches of that particular year. Those two layers are what our site relies on.

Keep Minor Luck as a label, not a forecast. The appendix row tells you the pair for the selected year, and that is all. It never changes strength, the Useful element or favorability, and it is not used to judge health, money or family events.

Data: the gap before Luck Pillars and the pair that fills it

The appendix matched the arrangement on all 2,000 charts, and the direction matched the Luck Pillar's direction on all 2,000. The check used each chart's fifth year of age.

The only-Minor-Luck years average 5.13. The distribution by nominal age is 0 years 4.7%, 1 year 11%, 2 years 8%, 3 years 8.6%, 4 years 9.9%, 5 years 12.2%, 6 years 9.6%, 7 years 9.9%, 8 years 9%, 9 years 10.6% and 10 years 6.6%. Two years or less, including 0, is 23.7%; 8 years or more is 26.1%, and by actual start time 21.6% start Luck Pillars 8 or more years after birth.

The favorable share is almost the same as the first Luck Pillar's. Across 9719 Minor Luck years in the 1898 non-special charts, the Minor Luck stem was favorable or useful 53.1%, unfavorable 33.1% and Useful 20.5%; the first Luck Pillar stem was favorable or useful 53.2% and unfavorable 32.7%.

In 160 charts, 8%, a year before the first Luck Pillar had a Minor Luck pair identical to the first Luck Pillar itself. It is a reminder that Minor Luck is the same cycle of sixty pairs, run from a different starting point.

Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Minor Luck was counted from the hour pillar by the same forward and backward rule as Luck Pillars and checked at the fifth year of age; the years before the first Luck Pillar, the direction match, the favorability of the Minor Luck stem and the overlap with the first Luck Pillar were tallied across the set. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.

FAQ

How is Minor Luck arranged, and how is it different from a Luck Pillar?

Minor Luck starts at the hour pillar and moves one pair for each year of age. Yang year male and yin year female births go forward; the other cases go backward, the same direction rule as Luck Pillars. A Luck Pillar is a ten-year cycle counted from the month pillar, and its start is set by the distance from birth to a solar term. In the 2,000 charts we cast, the direction matched in 100% of charts, but the starting points differ.

What should I look at before my Luck Pillars start?

Read the natal chart and the Annual Pillar. The natal chart gives the Day Master's strength and the Useful element; the Annual Pillar gives the stems and branches of that year. Our site lists Minor Luck for reference, but it does not use it to judge fortune. The average gap before the first Luck Pillar is 5.13 years, and for 23.7% of charts it is 2 years or less.

Minor Luck going through an unfavorable element means bad health in childhood?

Not from that alone. One factor never decides health, and our site does not use Minor Luck to judge fortune at all. A child's health depends on real care, sleep, food and medical advice. If you are worried about a child's health, speak to a doctor rather than reading a chart label.

Do I need to look at the Minor Luck in my chart result?

You can read it as a traditional note. It shows the pair for the Annual Pillar you selected, with nominal age that adds a year at each Li Chun. It never enters strength, the Useful element or favorability, and we do not use it to judge a year. The natal chart, the Luck Pillar and the Annual Pillar carry the reading.

Yun's tipBefore your Luck Pillars begin, read the natal chart and the Annual Pillar; Minor Luck in the appendix is reference only.
