How to read the year (Liu Nian): decade first, then this year
Liu Nian is the stem–branch of the current calendar year (by solar terms), read stacked on the natal chart and Da Yun. It colours one year’s ups and downs; the baseline remains natal favourable elements and the current decade.

Data: in mid–first-decade, how often does the year’s stem match the Useful God?
On 2000 charts we take the year pillar in year 5 of the first luck decade (a fixed, reproducible “one year inside luck”).
The year’s stem element equals the Useful God in 19.1%, sits in favourable in 32.5%, in unfavourable in 33.3% — same ballpark as first-luck-stem vs Useful God. A fitting year is neither rare nor a majority.
The year’s branch clashes the day branch in 8.1%; year’s stem shares the first luck stem’s element in 20.9%. Day-branch clashes deserve a closer look, but most years are not “clash the day branch” years.
Statistics: 2,000 birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time);.
What is the year pillar? A one-year plus or minus
Da Yun is the ten-year base; Liu Nian is the stem–branch added for this year. Inside the same decade, some years run smooth and some twist — often because the year does or doesn’t fit. Without a clear natal chart and decade tone, staring at the year alone scares or flatters you for the wrong reasons.
The year’s stem colours what shows; the year’s branch colours what roots and what gets activated. Both matter; the ruler is still the natal Useful God list.
How do you judge whether this year supports you?
Two questions. First: is the year’s element the Useful God, favourable, or unfavourable? Second: does it clash, combine, punish or harm a key natal or luck branch (month, day, or the Useful God’s root)?
Useful God arriving without breaking a key structure tends to help; unfavourable stacked on an unfavourable decade and clashing the day or month needs more room. Neutral years are often quiet — not every year needs drama.
Year Breaker and day-branch clashes — keep the tone calm
A clash is structural collision, not a verdict. When the year branch clashes a natal branch, tradition talks about “offending Tai Sui” or clashing a palace; a clash on the day branch is often linked to relationship, body rhythm or moving house. That is image-talk, not guaranteed harm.
Ask whether the arriving element is favourable, and whether the natal chart has a combination to soften it. Unfavourable clashes on a weak chart need care; favourable activations can be change that helps.
When the year fights the decade
Da Yun sets the tone; the year sets the ripple. An unfavourable year inside a favourable decade is usually a rough year on a still-supporting track; a Useful God year inside an unfavourable decade is a breath of air, not a rewrite of the decade.
When you explain luck, one sentence on the current decade, then the year — so readers don’t file a one-year story as a ten-year story.
Two real charts
Jia Chen · Jia Xu · Jia Chen · Yi Chou (male, 22 Oct 1964, 01:15, Beijing)
Jia Wood is born in Xu: Earth in command, Wood out of season. Three Jia and one Yi Peer stems support the Day Master; rated weak: Wood useful, Water and Metal favourable, Earth unfavourable. Luck starts ~5.6, forward; first pillar Yi Hai (about 1970–1979): Yi is Rob Wealth, Hai is Direct Resource — the support the chart wants.
Take 1974 inside that decade: Jia Yin. Jia is Peer, Yin is the salary branch — stem and branch are Useful God Wood. Strength-wise that year is weak Wood getting Peer and salary on top of an already supportive Hai decade: “base right, year adds,” not praise for the two characters Jia Yin alone.
Gui Mao · Ding Si · Yi Mao · Jia Shen (male, 12 May 1963, 15:45, Beijing)
Yi Wood is born in Si: Fire drains Wood. Jia Peer on the hour, Mao in year and day; rated weak: Water useful, Wood favourable, Earth and Fire unfavourable. Luck starts ~2, reverse; first pillar Bing Chen.
Take 1969 inside that decade: Ji You. Ji is Direct Wealth (Earth — unfavourable); You clashes day-branch Mao. An unfavourable year plus day-branch clash reads as pressure and relationship/home topics surfacing — not “offend Tai Sui = disaster.” Useful God is Water; seek buffer in Water/Wood months.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Year luck articles online are enough | Must stack on your natal chart and Da Yun | The same Ji-You year flips with Useful God |
| Offend Tai Sui = ruined year | Ask what clashes and whether it’s favourable | Year clash on day branch is only 8.1% |
| The year can turn fate | One-year stack; base is natal + Da Yun | Year stem matches Useful God ~19.1% |
FAQ
This year clashes my day branch. Does that mean a breakup or a move?
A day-branch clash is often linked to relationship or home movement, but movement isn’t breakup. Check whether the year’s element is unfavourable and whether the natal day branch has a combination to soften it.
My decade looks great but this year looks awful. Which wins?
Da Yun sets the ten-year tone; the year is the ripple. An unfavourable year in a favourable decade is usually a rough patch, not a flipped decade.
The year’s stem is my Useful God but the branch is unfavourable. Is it a good year?
Split them: surface chances may open while a palace feels awkward. Weigh by natal fav/unfav and which branch is activated.
Can I skip Da Yun and only read yearly forecasts?
No. Without the base, a year pillar has no ruler, and generic “year luck” articles will pull you off course.
Common mistakes
- A “good” year means everything goes well: still check Da Yun and clashes.
- Offending Tai Sui guarantees a bad year: favourable vs. unfavourable matters more than the label.
- The year can rewrite fate: it only stacks for one year.
