BaZi Yue Jiang (Month General): mid-qi branch, needs a birth time
Yue Jiang (the general branch from the last mid-qi before birth) is a shensha mark: find the previous mid-qi (Rain Water, Spring Equinox, Grain Rain, …), read the general branch from the mnemonic, then test year/month/day/hour branches. No reliable birth time → no Yue Jiang.

- Yue Jiang
- General branch from last mid-qi
- Mid-qi
- Twelve mid-season qi inside the 24 jieqi
- Jieqi
- Solar terms set the month pillar; mid-qi also feeds Ming Gong / Yue Jiang
- True solar time
- Longitude-corrected clock for qi boundaries
- Shensha
- Table labels; not Useful-god inputs
Method
Month pillar follows jie boundaries; Yue Jiang follows mid-qi — two rulers.
After the general branch is fixed, all four earthly branches are checked (hit 30.3%).
A Spring Equinox mnemonic has a conflicting example line; this site follows the full song and notes the dispute.
Why the clock matters
Mid-qi is a timestamp. A right date with a fuzzy hour can cross it.
These 2000 samples are timed, so mid-qi always resolved. Real users with date-only input see “cannot determine” — expected, not a bug.
After a hit, ask favorability
Unfavorable 42.2%, favorable 30.6%, Useful 12.3%. No “Yue Jiang = rank” rate.
Hits skew slightly weak (56.5%). The mark does not set strength.
Versus Jiang Xing and Yue De
Jiang Xing uses the day-branch triad; Yue De checks the day stem against the month triad class; Yue Jiang uses mid-qi. Three tables, three answers.
Two real charts
壬子 乙巳 甲子 壬申 (female, 1972-06-02 16:00 Beijing)
After Grain Full, general branch Shen hits the hour. True solar 15:47. Day Master Jia, strong; Useful Earth, favors Fire/Metal.
Shen is Indirect Wealth (Metal) for Jia — favorable here.
The mark points at Shen; favorability still decides.
乙亥 癸未 癸卯 辛酉 (male, 1995-07-11 18:30 Beijing)
After Summer Solstice, general branch Wei hits the month — Earth leans avoid. True solar 18:10. Day Master Gui, weak; Useful Metal.
Same shensha name, opposite favor reading from the chart above.
Numbers
Mid-qi fixed 100%; hit 605 / 2000 = 30.3%; table agree 100%. Useful/fav/unf 12.3 / 30.6 / 42.2.
Hits weak 56.5% / strong 43.3%. Pillar shares year/month/day/hour 8.9 / 9.5 / 8.0 / 8.7%.
Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Yue Jiang uses the last mid-qi general branch on all four earthly branches; no clock → unset. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Yue Jiang = Jiang Xing | Jiang Xing from day triad; Yue Jiang from mid-qi | Different lookups |
| Yue Jiang guarantees rank | Favor rates lean avoid | Useful only 12.3% |
| Noon is fine if hour unknown | Mid-qi may be wrong — better leave blank | Site withholds when unset |
| Only the month branch matters | All four branches checked | Day pillar share 8.0% |
Common mistakes
- Yue Jiang is another name for the month pillar.
- Crossing a jie changes Yue Jiang: mid-qi rules, not jie.
- True solar time never matters: it often moves mid-qi.
- A hit means noble help: read the branch element first.
FAQ
Yue Jiang vs Yue De vs Jiang Xing?
Yue De tests the day stem; Jiang Xing uses the day-branch triad; Yue Jiang fixes one mid-qi branch then scans four pillars.
Date only — can I still look it up?
Not reliably. Mid-qi may fall inside the calendar day.
Why does a book disagree at Spring Equinox?
Mnemonic vs example conflict. This site follows the full song and flags the dispute.
Does Yue Jiang enter Useful gods?
No.
