Jie Sha and Wang Shen: a paired lookup that names two branches, not two curses
Jie Sha (Robbery Star) and Wang Shen (Lost Spirit) are two spirit stars, traditional markers read from a table rather than forces in the chart. They are looked up as a pair. On our site's “Symbolic Stars lookup” in the chart result, take the trine group of the day branch and check the year, month and hour branches; the day branch itself is not counted. Shen, Zi and Chen see Si as Jie Sha and Hai as Wang Shen. Yin, Wu and Xu see Hai as Jie Sha and Si as Wang Shen. Si, You and Chou see Yin as Jie Sha and Shen as Wang Shen. Hai, Mao and Wei see Shen as Jie Sha and Yin as Wang Shen. The traditional origin is the twelve life stages (yang stems run forward, yin stems backward on our site): Jie Sha is the Extinction stage of the trine group's element, and Wang Shen is its Coming of Age stage. The names sound severe; the operation is a table lookup. We read them as images only, outside strength and favorability.

Data: how common the two stars are, and where they land
The day-branch lookup gives Jie Sha in 23.1% of charts (463) and Wang Shen in 23.3% (465); 3.8% (75 charts) carry both, and in those 75 the two named branches clash 100% of the time. At least one of the two appears in 42.6% of charts. Our site's “Symbolic Stars lookup” follows this same day-branch method.
By position, Jie Sha fell on the year branch 8.5%, the month branch 8.3% and the hour branch 8.3% of the time; Wang Shen fell on the year branch 7.8%, the month branch 8.7% and the hour branch 8.7%. The shares are close, so there is no special pillar for either star.
The Jie Sha branch, across 502 occurrences, was the Useful element 12.4%, favorable 25.7% and unfavorable 47.6%, and was hit by a six clash 16.1%; Wang Shen, also 502 occurrences, was 12%, 26.3% and 43.6%, clashed 15.7%. Their Ten God spread is wide: the most common for Jie Sha is Eating God at 13.5%, and for Wang Shen Rob Wealth at 12.4%, with every one of the ten between 8% and 13.5%.
Charts with either star were strong 48.8% of the time; charts with neither were strong 45.2%. The year-branch method gives Jie Sha 22.8% and Wang Shen 23.5%; the two methods disagree on Jie Sha in 31.4% of charts and on Wang Shen in 31.6%, and counting either method raises Jie Sha to 38.7% and Wang Shen to 39.1%.
Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Jie Sha and Wang Shen were looked up from the day branch's trine group against the year, month and hour branches, and compared with the year-branch method; their positions, element favorability, clashes and Ten God spread were tallied across the set. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.
Two real charts
Geng Wu (庚午) · Wu Yin (戊寅) · Xin Chou (辛丑) · Bing Shen (丙申) (male, Feb 5, 1990, 16:45, Beijing)
This chart carries both stars, so its Jie Sha and Wang Shen branches are a six clash by definition. True solar time was 16:16, and the Start of Spring had passed the day before. The day branch is Chou, which belongs to the Si/You/Chou group; the Jie Sha branch is Yin and the Wang Shen branch is Shen. The month branch Yin is Jie Sha and the hour branch Shen is Wang Shen, and Yin and Shen clash.
The Day Master is Xin Metal, born in a Yin month; the main qi of Yin is Jia Wood, Direct Wealth. The stems are Geng Rob Wealth, Wu Direct Resource and Bing Direct Officer. The branches are Wu Seven Killings, Yin Direct Wealth, Chou Indirect Resource and Shen Rob Wealth. The scoring gives Resource 2.07, Officer/Killings 1.93, Companions 1.2, Wealth 1.2 and Output 0.6, and the chart is weak (support 3.267, pressure 3.733). Useful element Earth (Resource), favorable Metal, unfavorable Water and Fire.
The Jie Sha branch Yin is Wood, Direct Wealth, and Wood is neither favorable nor unfavorable here; the Wang Shen branch Shen is Metal, Rob Wealth, and Metal is in the favorable column. In the same chart, one “evil” name sits on a neutral element and the other on a helpful one. Change to the year-branch method and the result differs: the year branch Wu belongs to Yin/Wu/Xu, which looks for Hai as Jie Sha and Si as Wang Shen, and neither appears among the month, day or hour branches, so this chart would carry neither.
Xin Hai (辛亥) · Ding You (丁酉) · Ji You (己酉) · Ren Shen (壬申) (female, Sep 21, 1971, 15:45, Beijing)
Here one branch changes its name with the lookup method, which shows how much the label depends on the rule. True solar time was 15:38. The day branch is You, which belongs to Si/You/Chou; the Jie Sha branch is Yin and the Wang Shen branch is Shen. The hour branch Shen is Wang Shen, and Yin does not appear.
The Day Master is Ji Earth, born in a You month; the main qi of You is Xin Metal, Eating God. The stems are Xin Eating God, Ding Indirect Resource and Ren Direct Wealth. The branches are Hai Direct Wealth, You Eating God, You Eating God and Shen Hurting Officer. The scoring gives Output 4.1, Wealth 1.63, Resource 1, Officer/Killings 0.17 and Companions 0.1, and the chart is weak (support 1.1, pressure 5.9). Useful element Fire (Resource), favorable Earth, unfavorable Metal and Wood.
The Wang Shen branch Shen is Metal, Hurting Officer, and Metal is unfavorable because Output already scores 4.1 and drains Ji Earth too much, not because the branch is called Wang Shen. Switch to the year-branch method and the year branch Hai belongs to Hai/Mao/Wei, where Jie Sha is Shen and Wang Shen is Yin. The same hour branch Shen is then called Jie Sha instead of Wang Shen. The character does not move; only its name does.
The lookup: start from the day branch, then check three positions
Jie Sha and Wang Shen are read as a pair from the day branch, and the day branch itself is not counted. Take the trine group the day branch belongs to, then look at the year, month and hour branches. Each group names one branch as Jie Sha and another as Wang Shen.
The four groups are simple to memorize. Our site's “Symbolic Stars lookup” uses exactly this day-branch method.
The two target branches are always a six clash
The Jie Sha branch and the Wang Shen branch always stand opposite each other: Si and Hai, or Yin and Shen. That is a six clash by construction, not by accident. So a chart that carries both, traditionally called “Wang Jie coming and going,” has its two named branches in a clash 100% of the time.
A clash here means movement and contact between two branches. It does not add a second layer of meaning beyond the clash itself, and it does not enter the strength count.
The same four branches also serve as Traveling Horse and Birth
Yin, Shen, Si and Hai are the four season-opening branches, and the trine lookup turns them into four familiar labels. When one of them lands in the year, month or hour branch, the day-branch group calls it Traveling Horse, Jie Sha, Wang Shen or the Birth stage of the group's own element in the twelve life stages.
Across 1,976 such placements, Traveling Horse was 25.7%, Jie Sha 25.4%, Wang Shen 25.4% and the Birth stage 23.5%. The four shares are almost equal. Jie Sha and Wang Shen are not a rare mark on top of the chart; they are names the same four branches take, depending on the day branch's group.
Year branch or day branch: the two methods often disagree
Many traditional lists say to look up from the year branch, while our site uses the day branch, and the answers are not the same. The year-branch method gives Jie Sha in 22.8% of charts and Wang Shen in 23.5%; the day-branch method gives 23.1% and 23.3%.
For a single chart, the two methods disagree about whether Jie Sha is present in 31.4% of cases, and about Wang Shen in 31.6%. If either method counts, Jie Sha reaches 38.7% and Wang Shen 39.1%. A label that changes with the lookup rule is a name, not a force.
On our site: an image, outside strength and favorability
We keep Jie Sha and Wang Shen outside the strength score and outside the favorable and unfavorable lists. The chart is still read from the four pillars, the month command and the strength count. The two stars are shown in the “Symbolic Stars lookup” as images only.
The data shows how little they track the balance: charts with either star were strong 48.8% of the time, and charts with neither were strong 45.2%. The Jie Sha branch fell on an unfavorable element 47.6%, a favorable one 25.7% and the Useful element 12.4%; Wang Shen was 43.6%, 26.3% and 12%. Their Ten God spread is wide, from 8% to 13.5% across all ten. Nothing here behaves like a switch.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Jie Sha means money loss and accidents | It is a table lookup, not a force | Its branch landed on an unfavorable element 47.6%, a favorable one 25.7% and the Useful element 12.4% |
| Wang Shen brings bloodshed | The name is stronger than the rule | Its branch landed on the Useful element 12% and a favorable element 26.3%; the name alone says nothing about injuries |
| Having both stars means a bad marriage | One factor cannot settle a marriage | 75 charts carried both and their named branches clash 100%, but a clash is movement, not a verdict on a relationship |
| The year-branch and day-branch methods should agree | They often disagree | They differ on Jie Sha in 31.4% of charts and on Wang Shen in 31.6% |
FAQ
Does having Jie Sha in my BaZi mean easy money loss or accidents?
No. Jie Sha is a spirit star read from a table, and we keep it outside strength and favorability. In the 2,000 charts we cast, 23.1% carried it, and its branch was unfavorable 47.6% of the time but favorable 25.7% and the Useful element 12.4%. Safety and money are real-world matters; one marker cannot predict an accident or a loss.
Is Wang Shen very evil? Will I have a blood injury?
The name is dramatic, but the rule is a branch lookup. Wang Shen appeared in 23.3% of charts, its branch was clashed 15.7% of the time, and its Ten God spread is broad. We do not read it as a health warning. If you have a health concern, see a doctor; a chart label is not a diagnosis.
I have both Jie Sha and Wang Shen (Wang Jie coming and going). Does that mean a bad marriage?
A marriage is not decided by two spirit stars. It is true that the two named branches always form a six clash, and 75 charts in the set carried both. But a clash means the two branches are in contact and movement, not that a relationship will fail. Read the whole chart, and give weight to the two people and their actual choices.
My Jie Sha result differs by year branch and by day branch. Which one should I use?
Use one method consistently. Our site uses the day branch and shows it in the “Symbolic Stars lookup.” The two methods disagree in 31.4% of charts for Jie Sha and 31.6% for Wang Shen, so the label is clearly rule-dependent. Neither result enters strength or favorability, so the practical answer is not to build a decision on either name.
Common mistakes
- Jie Sha is a robbery star, so money will be taken: it is a lookup outside strength and favorability; its branch was unfavorable 47.6% of the time and favorable 25.7%.
- Wang Shen is a lost spirit that brings disaster: its branch was the Useful element 12% of the time and favorable 26.3%, and its Ten God spread is wide, with no dominant pattern.
- Carrying both stars ruins a marriage: 75 charts had both, and the two named branches always clash, but a clash is contact and movement; a marriage depends on the whole chart and real life.
- The lookup method does not matter: the year-branch and day-branch methods disagree on Jie Sha in 31.4% of charts, so the name changes while the character stays.
