Travel Horse in BaZi: check whether you have it, then whether it helps
Yi Ma, the Travel Horse, is a spirit star (a traditional marker looked up from a table) standing for change, travel, job transfers and moving house. Look it up from both the year branch and the day branch: Shen-Zi-Chen points to Yin, Yin-Wu-Xu to Shen, Si-You-Chou to Hai, Hai-Mao-Wei to Si. Only if that branch actually appears in your four pillars do you have one. It is neither good nor bad by itself: whether it helps or makes life bumpy depends on whether its element is favorable. It never overrides strength and the Useful God.

How do you find it? Once from the year branch, once from the day branch
Find the three-harmony group of the year branch and the day branch, match the Travel Horse branch, then check whether it is actually in the four pillars. Shen-Zi-Chen points to Yin, Yin-Wu-Xu to Shen, Si-You-Chou to Hai, Hai-Mao-Wei to Si. Born in a Shen year? Your Travel Horse is Yin, and you only have it if the month, day or hour branch is Yin. “Should have” doesn't count.
Check both year and day, and count a character found from both only once. In our 2,000 charts, 36% (719) had a Travel Horse: 21.9% from the year branch, 23.1% from the day branch, and 7.7% with two or more placements. Our earlier intro article used the day branch only and got 23.1%; counting both brings the total to 36%.
Yin, Shen, Si and Hai don't automatically mean a Travel Horse
Yin, Shen, Si and Hai are candidates, not Travel Horses in themselves. 79.8% of our charts had at least one of them, but 54.9% of those had no Travel Horse by the method above. “You have one of those branches, so your Travel Horse is strong” is the most common misreading.
Nor does a Travel Horse mean you will emigrate or marry far away. It is a marker of movement: travel, a transfer, moving house, changing cities, a job with no fixed location. You can move plenty without leaving the country, and moving to the next city counts. People without one still travel and change jobs.
Which pillar it sits in shows where movement tends to happen
Placement says where the topic comes up, not which year it happens. In the year pillar it often involves early life, your hometown and the older generation, reading as leaving home early or studying and working elsewhere. In the month pillar it involves youth, parents and siblings, and the start of a career. On the day branch it sits on the spouse palace, so movement pulls in a partner and your own household. In the hour pillar it shows up later in life, with children, work circles and people you manage.
Of the 893 placements we counted, 32.0% were in the hour pillar, 30.8% in the month, 20.8% in the year and 16.3% on the day branch. Hour and month together are over 60%, so movement clusters around work and the years from youth into middle age.
Travel Horse clashed: movement on top of movement
A clashed Travel Horse reads as “moves more often”, not “something bad will happen”. A clash is one of the six branch oppositions, such as Yin–Shen or Si–Hai. 42.2% of the Travel Horses we counted were also clashed. A clashed one tends to mean travel, transfers and moves come faster, or a situation won't sit still for long.
Favorable or unfavorable still decides. A favorable Travel Horse tends to move you toward opportunity: a business trip, a transfer or a new environment can bring new resources. An unfavorable one feels like churn: more running around, less stability, more expense. A clash only amplifies the movement.
Favorable or not matters more than having one
A Travel Horse is neither good nor bad on its own; check whether its element is favorable first. Of the 893 placements, 39.4% were favorable and 44.1% unfavorable, with the rest neutral. Slightly more landed on the unfavorable side, so “I have a Travel Horse” is not a lucky label.
Spirit stars always come after strength balance and seasonal adjustment. Set the Day Master's strength and the Useful God first, then look at the Travel Horse; never change the Useful God because of one. If it's favorable, look for opportunity in movement; if unfavorable, plan moves carefully and keep a way back.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A Travel Horse means emigrating | It means change, travel, transfers and moving house | 36% of charts have one; they can't all emigrate. ym1's hour-pillar horse is favorable and simply means more movement |
| Yin, Shen, Si or Hai means a Travel Horse | Only the branch found from the year or day branch, and actually present, counts | 79.8% of charts have one of those branches, but 54.9% have no Travel Horse |
| A clashed Travel Horse is bad | A clash adds movement; favorability decides | 42.2% are clashed; in ym2 the Yin horse is unfavorable and clashed, so movement is harder work |
| An hour-pillar Travel Horse means living abroad in old age | Placement shows where movement tends to happen; timing comes from the luck cycles | 32.0% of 893 placements are in the hour pillar; they can't all mean settling abroad |
Two real charts
Wu-Xu · Jia-Zi · Geng-Wu · Jia-Shen (戊戌 甲子 庚午 甲申) (female, Dec 19, 1958, 16:30, Beijing)
Born December 19, 1958 at 16:30 in Beijing: Wu-Xu, Jia-Zi, Geng-Wu, Jia-Shen. The year branch Xu is in Yin-Wu-Xu, pointing to Shen; the day branch Wu is also in Yin-Wu-Xu, pointing to Shen; the hour branch is Shen. So she has a Travel Horse in the hour pillar, counted as one placement.
Geng Metal is born in a Zi month where Water drains Metal. We rate the chart weak (support 1.98, pressure 5.02): Earth (Resource) useful, Metal and Fire favorable, Water and Wood unfavorable. The hour branch Shen is Metal, a Peer, in the favorable group, so this Travel Horse is favorable.
Reading: in the hour pillar and favorable, it tends to mean more movement in later life, at work and through travel or transfers, and movement tends to help. The hour pillar also covers later life and children, but that doesn't mean “the children will emigrate”. Her Travel Horse isn't clashed; timing comes from the luck cycles.
Bing-Shen · Geng-Yin · Gui-Mao · Geng-Shen (丙申 庚寅 癸卯 庚申) (female, Feb 6, 1956, 17:00, Beijing)
Born February 6, 1956 at 17:00 in Beijing: Bing-Shen, Geng-Yin, Gui-Mao, Geng-Shen. The year branch Shen is in Shen-Zi-Chen, pointing to Yin; the month branch is Yin, so she has a Travel Horse in the month pillar. The day branch Mao is in Hai-Mao-Wei, pointing to Si, and there is no Si.
This is a textbook clashed Travel Horse: the month branch Yin is clashed from both sides by the year branch Shen and the hour branch Shen. Two Shen clash one Yin, a Yin–Shen clash.
Gui Water is born in a Yin month where Wood drains Water. We rate the chart weak (support 3.35, pressure 3.65): Water (Peers) useful, Metal and Fire favorable, Earth and Wood unfavorable. The month branch Yin is Wood, Hurting Officer, unfavorable, and it is clashed twice.
Reading: in the month pillar, movement shows up more in youth and at the start of a career. Yin is unfavorable and clashed, so movement tends to cost effort: changing cities, changing roles, running back and forth. A clash makes movement come earlier or more often; whether it helps depends on the luck cycles.
Data: how common the Travel Horse is, where it lands, and favorability
36% of charts (719) have a Travel Horse in the natal chart: 21.9% found from the year branch, 23.1% from the day branch, 7.7% with two or more placements. The earlier day-branch-only figure was 23.1%; don't mix the two methods.
Of 893 placements, 32.0% were in the hour pillar, 30.8% in the month, 20.8% in the year and 16.3% on the day branch. Favorable 39.4%, unfavorable 44.1%; 42.2% were clashed.
79.8% of charts had at least one of Yin, Shen, Si or Hai, but 54.9% of those had no Travel Horse. Having a candidate branch and having a Travel Horse are two different things.
Statistics: 2,000 birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time). The Travel Horse was looked up from the three-harmony group of the year and day branches (Shen-Zi-Chen to Yin, Yin-Wu-Xu to Shen, Si-You-Chou to Hai, Hai-Mao-Wei to Si) and counted only when present in the four pillars; a branch found from both year and day counts once. “Clashed” uses the six branch clashes.
FAQ
My chart has Yin, Shen, Si and Hai. Is my Travel Horse strong?
Not necessarily. Those four branches are only candidates. Look once from the year branch and once from the day branch, and count it only if the resulting branch is really in your four pillars. 79.8% of our charts had at least one of those branches, and 54.9% had no Travel Horse.
My Travel Horse is in the hour pillar. Will I retire abroad or have kids far away?
That's too specific. An hour-pillar Travel Horse usually means more movement later in life, at work and through travel or transfers, and it can involve children moving around. But 32.0% of 893 placements are in the hour pillar; they can't all mean settling abroad. The luck cycles and real choices matter more.
Does a clashed Travel Horse mean I'll change jobs or move house?
A clash makes movement more visible, not guaranteed. 42.2% of Travel Horses are clashed; many people do change roles, travel for work or change cities, but it can also just mean a faster pace. Check whether the clash hits something favorable or unfavorable, and whether a luck cycle activates it.
Is a favorable Travel Horse better than an unfavorable one?
Yes. A favorable one tends to turn movement into opportunity: trips, transfers and new environments can help. An unfavorable one tends to cost more effort, with more running around and expense. But never read it alone: set strength and the Useful God first, because a spirit star can't override them.
Common mistakes
- A Travel Horse means emigration: it means change, travel, transfers and moving; you can move plenty without leaving the country.
- Yin, Shen, Si or Hai means a Travel Horse: 79.8% of charts have one of them and 54.9% have no Travel Horse.
- A clash always ruins a Travel Horse: 42.2% are clashed; check favorability, since a clashed unfavorable horse can shake trouble loose.
