Flying Blade (Fei Ren): the branch opposite Yang Blade, read as a lookup only
Flying Blade (飞刃, Fei Ren) is one of the Symbolic Stars, a traditional label found by looking characters up in a table rather than by weighing the chart. Start from the day stem, the heavenly stem of the birth day, and find its Yang Blade branch (羊刃, Yang Ren: the fixed prosperous branch assigned to that stem). The pairs are Jia–Mao, Yi–Chen, Bing and Wu–Wu, Ding and Ji–Wei, Geng–You, Xin–Xu, Ren–Zi and Gui–Chou. Now take the branch directly opposite that one, six positions away in the twelve branches: that is the Flying Blade. Our site checks only the year, month and hour branches for a hit; the day branch is not checked, because a day branch sitting on Yang Blade is a separate matter. Like every Symbolic Star here, Flying Blade is reference only. It does not enter the strength score and does not choose the Useful element (用神).

The rule: find Yang Blade, then cross to the other side
Flying Blade is not a second set of rules; it is the opposite branch of Yang Blade. Jia has Yang Blade at Mao, so its Flying Blade is You. Yi goes Chen to Xu, Bing and Wu go Wu to Zi, Ding and Ji go Wei to Chou, Geng goes You to Mao, Xin goes Xu to Chen, Ren goes Zi to Wu and Gui goes Chou to Wei.
Remember the Yang Blade pair and the Flying Blade is simply the far side. Yang Blade is a fixed prosperous branch looked up from the day stem. Flying Blade flips that position across the circle, so the two are always six branches apart.
Our site checks three positions: the year branch, the month branch and the hour branch. The day branch is left out, because a day branch on Yang Blade is a different question and should not be relabelled as Flying Blade.
The result agreed with the site's Symbolic Stars lookup on every chart. In the 2,000 charts we cast, 481 hit Flying Blade, 24.1%. It marks a position and adds no points to the strength score.
Hit rate: similar frequency, opposite strength lean
Flying Blade is as common as Yang Blade, but the charts it lands on are not the same kind. Among 2,000 charts, Flying Blade hit 481, 24.1%, and Yang Blade hit 461, 23.1%. Both sit a little above one fifth.
Flying Blade charts lean weak; Yang Blade charts lean strong. Of the Flying Blade charts, 64.2% were weak and 35.8% strong. Of the Yang Blade charts, 65.9% were strong. The same word, blade, points in opposite directions depending on which side of the Day Master it sits.
Only 73 charts, 3.6%, carried both. Most of the time you only need to tell which one you have, not combine the two names into one idea.
The branch itself explains the gap. Yang Blade is traditionally the Day Master's own prosperous position. Flying Blade is its opposite, and it lands more often on Wealth, Officer or Killings positions, which is why Flying Blade charts are more often weak.
Where it lands: Direct Wealth leads, favorability decides the reading
Which branch the Flying Blade lands on matters more than the name. By Ten God, Direct Wealth was the most common at 39.8%, then Direct Officer 20.2%, Eating God 11.3%, Companion 9.8%, Seven Killings 9.4% and Direct Resource 9.4%.
The three positions are evenly spread. Year branch 8%, month branch 9.6%, hour branch 8.4%. There is no lopsided pattern that makes an hour-pillar Flying Blade especially severe.
What matters is whether that branch helps the Day Master. The Flying Blade branch was the Useful element in only 11.2% of charts, favorable in 26.5%, and unfavorable in 46.2%. Another 22.7% had the branch clashed.
So the claim that Flying Blade means injury or lost money does not hold. The same marker reads differently on the favorable side and on the unfavorable side. Read favorability first, then check whether a Luck Pillar or annual pillar brings a clash.
A day branch on Yang Blade is Yang Blade, not Flying Blade
There were 193 charts, 9.7%, with the day branch itself on Yang Blade. That position counts as Yang Blade only. Flying Blade is still looked for on the year, month and hour branches.
Why exclude the day branch? The day branch is the Day Master's own seat. Yang Blade there describes the Day Master's own force. Flying Blade describes the far side of that force. The two should not be merged.
Our lookup therefore never relabels a day-branch Yang Blade as Flying Blade. If the day branch is Yang Blade, record Yang Blade, then search the other three positions separately for a Flying Blade hit.
The reverse is also true: no day-branch Yang Blade does not mean no Flying Blade. Flying Blade depends only on the year, month and hour branches, not on what sits in the day branch.
Reading it: set the name aside and return to support and pressure
Flying Blade does not enter strength and does not set favorability. Our site scores the chart first: a strong Day Master is drained, spent or controlled, a weak one is supported. A climate need is added afterward and is never listed unfavorable.
Place the Flying Blade branch's element inside the chart's own favorable list. If it is favorable, treat it as a reminder. If it is unfavorable, watch for a Luck Pillar or annual pillar that clashes it.
No single marker can decide a life event. Flying Blade only records a table position. Marriage, money and health have to be read from the whole chart and from real circumstances, not from one factor.
Two real charts
Ren Shen (壬申) · Ren Yin (壬寅) · Ren Shen (壬申) · Bing Wu (丙午) (female, Feb 26, 1992, 13:00, Beijing)
Here the Flying Blade lands on the hour branch, and its element is unfavorable. True solar time was 12:32. The birth came after Rain Water, so the month pillar is Ren Yin. The Day Master is Ren Water, born in a Yin month; early-spring Wood is in command and Water is out of season.
Two Companions help on the stems, but the branches carry more Output and Wealth. The stems are Ren Companion at the year, Ren Companion at the month and Bing Indirect Wealth at the hour. The branches are Shen, Yin, Shen and Wu. Scoring gives Output 2.7, Companions 1.85, Wealth 1.45, Resource 0.7 and Officer/Killings 0.3; support 2.85 against pressure 4.15, so the chart is weak by points.
Yang Blade is Zi, Flying Blade is Wu, and the hour branch Wu hits it. Wu is Indirect Wealth to Ren Water, and Fire belongs to the unfavorable side. The Useful element is Metal, favorable Water, unfavorable Fire and Wood. The Flying Blade is noted, but the weak Day Master still takes Metal and Water. Fire on that branch is unfavorable, so a Luck Pillar that clashes Wu deserves a second look; the marker alone decides nothing.
Jia Zi (甲子) · Gui You (癸酉) · Jia Zi (甲子) · Bing Yin (丙寅) (male, Sep 27, 1984, 04:00, Beijing)
This chart's Flying Blade sits on the month branch, and its element is favorable. True solar time was 03:55. The birth came after the Autumn Equinox, so the month pillar is Gui You. The Day Master is Jia Wood, born in a You month; autumn Metal is in command.
Resource and Officer pressure are both heavy, yet the Day Master still comes out strong. The stems are Gui Direct Resource at the month and Bing Eating God at the hour. The branches are Zi Direct Resource, You Direct Officer, Zi Direct Resource and Yin Companion. Scoring gives Resource 2.85, Officer/Killings 2, Companions 1.35, Output 0.8 and Wealth 0; support 3.6 against pressure 3.4, so the chart is strong by points.
Yang Blade is Mao, Flying Blade is You, and the month branch You hits it. You is Direct Officer to Jia Wood, and Metal is on the favorable side. The Useful element is Fire, favorable Earth and Metal, unfavorable Wood and Water. A Flying Blade on the favorable side does not promote it to a reason for the Useful element; Fire remains the Useful element because support and pressure ask for drain.
Data: 481 Flying Blade charts and how their hit branches split
Flying Blade hit 481 of the 2,000 charts, 24.1%, matching the site's Symbolic Stars lookup on all 2,000. Yang Blade hit 461 charts, 23.1%.
Only 73 charts, 3.6%, hit both. Flying Blade charts were 64.2% weak and 35.8% strong; Yang Blade charts were 65.9% strong.
By position: year 8%, month 9.6%, hour 8.4%. By Ten God on the hit branch: Direct Wealth 39.8%, Direct Officer 20.2%, Eating God 11.3%, Companion 9.8%, Seven Killings 9.4% and Direct Resource 9.4%.
The hit branch was the Useful element in 11.2%, favorable in 26.5%, unfavorable in 46.2%, and clashed in 22.7%. The day branch itself sat on Yang Blade in 193 charts, 9.7%, and that position is not counted as Flying Blade.
Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Flying Blade was found by taking the day stem's Yang Blade branch and then its opposite branch, checking only the year, month and hour branches; the day branch was excluded. Favorability of the hit branch follows this site's Useful, favorable and unfavorable lists for that branch's element. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flying Blade means injury and money loss | Check the hit branch's favorability first | It was unfavorable in 46.2% and the Useful element in only 11.2% |
| Flying Blade is the same as Yang Blade | Flying Blade is the branch opposite Yang Blade | Yang Blade charts were 65.9% strong; Flying Blade charts were 64.2% weak |
| A day branch on Yang Blade means Flying Blade is present | The day branch counts as Yang Blade only; Flying Blade checks year, month and hour | 193 charts, 9.7%, had the day branch on Yang Blade |
| Flying Blade is more dangerous than Yang Blade | Neither one enters strength or favorability | Only 73 charts, 3.6%, carried both |
Common mistakes
- Flying Blade brings injury and money loss: read the hit branch's favorability first. It was unfavorable in 46.2% and the Useful element in only 11.2%, so one marker cannot settle fortune.
- Flying Blade is just another name for Yang Blade: Flying Blade is the branch opposite Yang Blade. Yang Blade charts were 65.9% strong, while Flying Blade charts were 64.2% weak.
- A day branch on Yang Blade means there is a Flying Blade too: the day branch is counted as Yang Blade only; Flying Blade checks the year, month and hour branches. That setup appeared in 193 charts, 9.7%.
- Flying Blade is the more severe of the two: neither enters strength or favorability, and only 73 charts, 3.6%, had both. There is no basis for ranking them by severity.
FAQ
What is Flying Blade in BaZi, and how is it found?
It is the branch opposite Yang Blade. Look up Yang Blade from the day stem: Jia–Mao, Yi–Chen, Bing and Wu–Wu, Ding and Ji–Wei, Geng–You, Xin–Xu, Ren–Zi, Gui–Chou. Then take the branch across the circle. Our site checks the year, month and hour branches only, and treats the result as reference, not as a change to strength or the Useful element.
How is Flying Blade different from Yang Blade?
Yang Blade is the fixed prosperous branch assigned to the day stem. Flying Blade is its opposite. In 2,000 charts, Flying Blade hit 24.1% and Yang Blade 23.1%, which looks similar, but 64.2% of Flying Blade charts were weak while 65.9% of Yang Blade charts were strong.
Is Flying Blade on the hour pillar especially bad?
No position decides that. The hit rate was year 8%, month 9.6% and hour 8.4%, so the three positions are close. The real question is whether the hit branch is favorable or unfavorable for that chart, and whether a Luck Pillar clashes it. One factor cannot decide a period of life.
Does Flying Blade in a woman's chart mean relationship trouble?
A single Flying Blade cannot describe a relationship. It only says that one branch sits opposite Yang Blade; it does not enter strength or favorability. Marriage has to be read from the whole chart and from how two people actually treat each other, not from one factor alone.
