Heaven-and-Earth Turning Star (Tian Di Zhuan Sha): a day pillar that has to meet its season
Heaven-and-Earth Turning Star (天地转煞, Tian Di Zhuan Sha) is a Symbolic Star that pairs the day pillar with the birth season. Spring is the Yin, Mao and Chen months; the day pillars are Yi Mao and Xin Mao. Summer is Si, Wu and Wei with Bing Wu and Wu Wu. Autumn is Shen, You and Xu with Xin You and Gui You. Winter is Hai, Zi and Chou with Ren Zi and Bing Zi. The first pillar in each pair is Heaven Turning (天转): its stem and branch both belong to the season's element, and the branch is the season's strongest character. The second is Earth Turning (地转): only the branch is the season's strongest character, while the stem belongs to another element. Season means the solar-term month branch, not the lunar or Gregorian month. Our site lists the marker in the “Symbolic Stars lookup” and keeps it out of strength and favorability.

One name, two different day-pillar tests
Heaven Turning and Earth Turning share a season but not a make-up. Heaven Turning needs the stem and branch to belong to the season's element, with the branch on the season's strongest character: Yi Mao in spring, Bing Wu in summer, Xin You in autumn, Ren Zi in winter. Earth Turning needs only that same strongest branch, so its stem can be another element: Xin Mao, Wu Wu, Gui You, Bing Zi.
The season is read from the month branch. A Xin You day in a Shen, You or Xu month is Heaven Turning; the same day in a Yin month is not. Lunar and Gregorian months do not enter the test.
The difference is not cosmetic. In Heaven Turning the Day Master's own element is the season's element. In Earth Turning the season backs the branch, and what that branch means to the Day Master depends on the stem above it.
Heaven Turning carries the stronger tendency
The numbers separate the two groups. 85.2% of the 27 Heaven Turning charts were strong, against 58.1% of the 31 Earth Turning charts and 46.7% of all 2,000. The rule explains it: in Heaven Turning the Day Master is in season and sits on the season's strongest branch.
Earth Turning is milder because the season backs the branch, not the Day Master. Its strong share, 58.1%, is still above the whole group, but its weak share, 41.9%, is far from small.
Some Heaven Turning charts are not in season after all. Chen belongs to spring in the lookup, yet Chen Earth is in command during that month. Heaven Turning charts in season, at the Wang or Xiang stage, were 70.4%; Earth Turning charts were 54.8%, and all 2,000 were 41%.
The branch says what is strong; the stem says whose element it is
Earth Turning can point in opposite directions from one season to the next. In the 31 charts, Gui You put Indirect Resource on the branch, Bing Zi put Direct Officer, Wu Wu put Direct Resource and Xin Mao put Indirect Wealth. The split was Indirect Resource 11, Direct Officer 9, Direct Resource 7 and Indirect Wealth 4.
That is why two Earth Turning charts can want opposite things. In one the strong branch feeds the Day Master; in the other it is Wealth or Officer/Killings pressing on it. The name does not settle which.
Heaven Turning leaves less room for that question. Its branch is the Day Master's own element in every case, so the season is always feeding the Day Master itself, not another family.
What each group wants from the chart
Heaven Turning charts mostly want to drain, control or spend. After one special structure was set aside, the 26 remaining charts took Output as Useful in 46.2% and Officer/Killings in 34.6%, with Resource 11.5%, Companions 3.8% and Wealth 3.8%. The season's own element, which is also the Day Master's element, was listed unfavorable in 84.6%.
Earth Turning charts are more mixed. In the 30 remaining charts, Wealth was Useful 40%, Resource 26.7%, Output 16.7%, Companions 13.3% and Officer/Killings 3.3%; the season's element was unfavorable in 53.3%.
A Turning Star is not a command to supplement the Day Master. For Heaven Turning that advice usually points the wrong way, because the Day Master is already the season's element and often strong. The Useful element decides what to add, not the name of the marker.
A matching day pillar without the season is not the marker
The season condition is doing the real work. 203 charts had one of the eight day pillars but were born outside its season. Their strong share was 43.8%, close to the whole group, so the day pillar alone says little.
A near miss is not a milder Turning Star. It is simply not the marker. The lookup needs both pieces, the day pillar and the solar-term month.
The result is one line in the chart, not a forecast. It sits in the “Symbolic Stars lookup” beside other traditional markers. Strength, the Useful element and favorability come from the four pillars and the month command.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Being born on a Turning Star day makes life unstable and accident-prone | It is a marker, and it does not judge fortune | At most it shows a strength tendency: Heaven Turning 85.2% strong and Earth Turning 58.1% |
| Heaven Turning and Earth Turning are the same thing | Heaven Turning has both stem and branch in season; Earth Turning only the branch | Strong shares are 85.2% against 58.1%, and their Useful element patterns differ |
| A Turning Star means the Day Master needs support | Heaven Turning charts usually want drain, control or spend | The season's element was unfavorable in 84.6% of them; Output was Useful 46.2% and Officer/Killings 34.6% |
| A Yi Mao or Bing Wu day is enough to call it a Turning Star | The season has to match too | 203 charts had the day pillar but the wrong season, and 43.8% of them were strong, close to the whole group |
Two real charts
Geng Shen (庚申) · Jia Shen (甲申) · Xin You (辛酉) · Bing Shen (丙申) (female, Aug 16, 1980, 16:00, Beijing)
This is autumn Heaven Turning, and the chart is as heavy as the rule suggests. True solar time was 15:41. The birth came after Start of Autumn, so the month pillar is Jia Shen. The Day Master is Xin Metal, born in a Shen month; Metal is in command and at the Wang stage, and the day pillar Xin You is the autumn Heaven Turning. The stems are Geng Rob Wealth, Jia Direct Wealth and Bing Direct Officer. The branches are Shen Rob Wealth, Shen Rob Wealth, You Companion and Shen Rob Wealth.
The scoring gives Companions 3.6, Output 1.05, Wealth 1, Officer/Killings 1 and Resource 0.35, and the chart is strong (month support; support 3.95, pressure 3.05). Metal makes up 57.5% of whole-chart element strength. Useful element Water (Output), favorable Fire and Wood, unfavorable Earth and Metal.
Heaven Turning describes the setup, and the setup here is a heavy Day Master. The day pillar and the season both stand on Metal: Xin You in a Shen month, with three Shen and a You below. The chart wants drain with Water, control with Fire and spend with Wood; the Day Master's own Metal is unfavorable. The label adds no separate message to that.
Ren Yin (壬寅) · Ren Yin (壬寅) · Xin Mao (辛卯) · Bing Shen (丙申) (male, Feb 22, 1962, 17:15, Beijing)
Here the same family of label lands on a weak chart. True solar time was 16:46. The birth came after Start of Spring, so the year pillar is Ren Yin and the month pillar Ren Yin. The Day Master is Xin Metal, born in a Yin month; Wood is in command and Metal is imprisoned in that season, so it is out of season. The day pillar Xin Mao is the spring Earth Turning. The stems are Ren Hurting Officer, Ren Hurting Officer and Bing Direct Officer. The branches are Yin Direct Wealth, Yin Direct Wealth, Mao Indirect Wealth and Shen Rob Wealth. The chart has a Yin–Shen clash.
The scoring gives Wealth 2.5, Output 1.8, Officer/Killings 1.75, Companions 0.6 and Resource 0.35, and the chart is weak (support 0.95, pressure 6.05). Useful element Earth (Resource), favorable Metal, unfavorable Fire and Water.
Earth Turning says the branch is strong, not the Day Master. Mao Wood is in command, and to Xin Metal it is Indirect Wealth; what is strong in this chart is Wealth. The chart is very weak and wants Earth Resource and Metal Companions, the opposite direction from the first example. One label covers both because only the season and the branch are fixed.
Data: 58 hits, and a clear split between the two types
The lookup hit 58 charts, 2.9% of the 2,000. There were 27 Heaven Turning and 31 Earth Turning, and the result agreed with the “Symbolic Stars lookup” on all 2,000. By day pillar the hits were Xin You 11, Gui You 11, Bing Zi 9, Yi Mao 8, Wu Wu 7, Bing Wu 5, Xin Mao 4 and Ren Zi 3.
Heaven Turning is the stronger group. 85.2% of its 27 charts were strong and 14.8% weak; it was in season 70.4% of the time. Earth Turning was 58.1% strong and 41.9% weak, in season 54.8%. Across all 2,000 charts, 46.7% were strong and 41% were in season.
Their Useful elements run in different directions. Heaven Turning, on 26 charts after one special structure was removed, took Output 46.2%, Officer/Killings 34.6%, Resource 11.5%, Companions 3.8% and Wealth 3.8%; the season's element was unfavorable 84.6%. Earth Turning, on 30 charts after one removal, took Wealth 40%, Resource 26.7%, Output 16.7%, Companions 13.3% and Officer/Killings 3.3%; the season's element was unfavorable 53.3%.
The Earth Turning branch roles are spread out. Indirect Resource 11 came with Gui You, Direct Officer 9 with Bing Zi, Direct Resource 7 with Wu Wu and Indirect Wealth 4 with Xin Mao. Separately, 203 charts had one of the eight day pillars outside its season and were not counted; 43.8% of them were strong, close to the whole group.
Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Heaven-and-Earth Turning was counted only when the day pillar was one of the eight listed and the solar-term month matched, with Heaven Turning and Earth Turning tallied apart; strength, in-season state, Useful elements and the day-pillar-outside-season group were counted separately. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.
Common mistakes
- A Turning Star day means a life of upheaval: the marker only pairs a day pillar with a season and never enters strength or favorability, so it cannot describe a life on its own.
- The two Turning Stars are interchangeable: Heaven Turning needs stem and branch in season, Earth Turning only the branch, and their strong shares are 85.2% and 58.1%.
- Every Turning Star chart needs its Day Master strengthened: Heaven Turning charts usually need the opposite, and their season element was listed unfavorable in 84.6%.
- The day pillar alone is enough: 203 charts had one of the eight day pillars outside its season and are not counted; 43.8% of them were strong.
FAQ
What does Heaven-and-Earth Turning Star mean, and is it serious?
It is a traditional marker that pairs the day pillar with the birth season, and our site keeps it outside strength, the Useful element and favorability. Serious is not the right word. In the 2,000 charts we cast, 58 (2.9%) matched, and the actual reading still comes from the four pillars and the month command, not from the label.
I was born on a Xin You day in autumn. Is that Heaven Turning?
Yes, if the month branch is Shen, You or Xu. Xin You is the autumn Heaven Turning pillar, and the autumn months are the season it needs. In the 2,000 charts, Xin You was the most common hit at 11 charts. Our site shows the result in the “Symbolic Stars lookup” and does not let it change the strength score.
How do I resolve Heaven-and-Earth Turning?
There is nothing to resolve. We do not treat the name as a curse, so no ritual is needed. Read the Day Master's strength first, then the Useful element and the favorable and unfavorable elements. A weak chart is supported, a strong one is drained, spent or controlled. The element you add is the Useful element, not a remedy for a name.
How is this different from Four Wastes?
Both are day-pillar-plus-season lookups, but they point in opposite directions. Four Wastes is a Day Master out of season that still sits on its own root; Heaven Turning is a Day Master in season that sits on the season's strongest branch. Four Wastes has its own entry. Neither marker joins the strength count.
