Quick answer: Vedic astrology puts the Moon first. The sign your Moon is in, your Rashi, describes how your mind and feelings work. The zodiac is also divided into 27 lunar mansions (Nakshatras) of 13°20′ each. The one holding your Moon, your birth Nakshatra, fills in the details of your temperament and decides which planet starts your Dasha.
Why is the Moon more important than the Sun?
In Jyotish the mind (manas) governs how you feel and react to life, and the Moon signifies the mind. Daily moods, mother, security and how you fit in a group all start with the Moon. Many Indian horoscopes are written by Moon sign for that reason.
What are the 27 Nakshatras?
Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet, a deity and a symbol. The nine grahas rule three Nakshatras each, in this order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury.
| Nakshatra | Ruler | Symbol | Keywords |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ashwini | Ketu | Horse's head | Speed, healing, beginnings |
| Bharani | Venus | Womb | Bearing burdens, birth, extremes |
| Krittika | Sun | Blade | Sharpness, purification, directness |
| Rohini | Moon | Ox cart | Beauty, abundance, attraction |
| Mrigashira | Mars | Deer's head | Curiosity, searching |
| Ardra | Rahu | Teardrop | Storms, renewal |
(The remaining 21 follow the same cycle of rulers, three rounds in all.)
Each Nakshatra has four padas
Each Nakshatra splits into four quarters (padas) of 3°20′, and each pada matches one sign in the D9 chart. Your birth Nakshatra and pada tell you your Moon in both the birth chart and D9.
FAQ
How is the birth Nakshatra different from the Moon sign?
The Moon sign (30°) is the broad frame; the Nakshatra (13°20′) is the fine detail. Two people with a Taurus Moon, one in late Krittika and one in Rohini, can feel quite different.
Can Nakshatras be used for compatibility?
Yes. Traditional Indian matching (Ashtakoota) mainly compares the two birth Nakshatras, out of 36 points.
Why does my Nakshatra decide my Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha starts with your birth Nakshatra's ruler. The share of the Nakshatra the Moon has already crossed is deducted from that first period; then the periods follow in a fixed order.
