Vedic vs. Western Astrology: What's the Difference?

Quick answer: Vedic astrology (Jyotish) and Western astrology look at the same sky but differ in five main ways: the sidereal zodiac (most people's signs shift back one), nine grahas instead of ten planets, more weight on the Moon and the 27 Nakshatras, Dasha periods for timing, and divisional charts such as D9.
Five key differences
| Western | Vedic (Jyotish) | |
|---|---|---|
| Zodiac | Tropical (starts at the spring equinox) | Sidereal (starts from the fixed stars) |
| Bodies | Ten planets, often Chiron too | Nine grahas: Sun, Moon, five planets, Rahu, Ketu |
| Focus | Sun sign, psychology | Moon sign, Ascendant, Nakshatra |
| Timing | Transits, progressions, solar returns | Vimshottari and other Dashas |
| Extra charts | Usually the birth chart only | D9, D10 and a dozen more divisional charts |
Why did my sign change?
The tropical zodiac pins 0° Aries to the spring equinox; the sidereal zodiac follows the actual stars. Because of precession they are now about 24° apart, so a Western Leo Sun is often a Vedic Cancer Sun. Neither is wrong; they just start counting from different points.
What are Rahu and Ketu?
They are not physical bodies but the two points where the Moon's path crosses the ecliptic: the north node (Rahu) and south node (Ketu). Jyotish treats them as "shadow planets." Rahu stands for craving and obsession, Ketu for letting go and what you bring from the past.
Different reading styles
Western astrology leans toward personality and psychology. Jyotish puts more weight on concrete life events and timing, such as when to marry or change jobs. Many of its rules come from the classic Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, traditionally credited to the sage Parashara.
FAQ
Which one is more accurate?
They are different methods, so a simple "more accurate" doesn't apply. Cast both and see which description fits you, or use Jyotish for timing and Western astrology for psychology.
Does Vedic astrology use houses?
Yes, usually Whole Sign houses: the whole sign holding the Ascendant is the 1st house, which keeps things clear.
What do I need to cast a Vedic chart?
The same as Western: birth date, exact time and place. The time matters a lot for the Ascendant and divisional charts.
