Quick answer: Dasha is Vedic astrology's timing system. The most common one, Vimshottari Dasha, divides life into nine planetary periods totaling 120 years, starting with the ruler of your birth Nakshatra. Whichever planet is running, the houses it rules and occupies in your chart become the theme of that time.
How long is each period?
| Order | Planet | Years |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ketu | 7 |
| 2 | Venus | 20 |
| 3 | Sun | 6 |
| 4 | Moon | 10 |
| 5 | Mars | 7 |
| 6 | Rahu | 18 |
| 7 | Jupiter | 16 |
| 8 | Saturn | 19 |
| 9 | Mercury | 17 |
If your Moon was halfway through its Nakshatra at birth, only half of the first period remains. That is why everyone starts at a different planet and age.
Periods within periods
Each major period (Mahadasha) splits into nine sub-periods (Antardasha) in the same order and proportions, and those split further. "Jupiter–Saturn" means you read both Jupiter and Saturn together.
How do you judge a period?
Look at the running planet in your birth chart: its house, its dignity, the houses it rules and the planets it joins or aspects. A strong planet ruling the 10th house often brings career growth; a pressured planet in the 12th can mean high expenses and a need for time alone to regroup.
How is it different from BaZi luck pillars?
BaZi luck pillars change every ten years and run forward or backward from the month pillar. Dashas vary from six to twenty years and are based on planets. Both divide life into chapters, but their rules are unrelated and can't be converted into each other.
FAQ
Are Rahu and Saturn periods always hard?
Not always. They often bring pressure and tests, but for someone whose chart has them well placed and strong, they can be the most productive, hard-working years.
What makes Dasha timing reliable?
Mostly the birth time. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so a small time error shifts its place in the Nakshatra and moves every period's start date.
Are there other Dasha systems?
Yes, such as Yogini and Chara Dasha. Vimshottari is the most widely used.
