Quick answer: The Four Transformations are the "switches" of a Zi Wei chart. Your birth-year stem decides which four stars get Hua Lu (flow and resources), Hua Quan (power and pressure), Hua Ke (reputation and helpers) and Hua Ji (attachment, debt and effort).
What each transformation means
| Transformation | Keywords | Typical effect in a palace |
|---|---|---|
| Hua Lu | Flow, gain, good fortune | Opportunities come easily here |
| Hua Quan | Control, drive, pressure | You want to lead here; more push and competition |
| Hua Ke | Reputation, order, helpers | Things stay dignified; someone helps you out |
| Hua Ji | Attachment, lack, setbacks | You care most here, and it keeps coming back |
How are they assigned?
By the stem of your birth year. Each of the ten stems has its own set. In a Jia year, for example, Lian Zhen takes Lu, Po Jun Quan, Wu Qu Ke and Tai Yang Ji. A few stems, Geng especially, vary between schools. This set is your lifelong baseline. Each decade and each year has its own stem too, which "flies" a new set onto the chart. That is how timing is read.
Is Hua Ji always bad?
No. Hua Ji says "you can't let this go." That brings worry, and also focus. People with Hua Ji in the Career Palace are often intensely serious about work: tiring, but the results are solid. The point of reading Ji is knowing where to put in effort and where to leave room, not fearing it.
How to read them
Find which palace each birth-year transformation sits in and ask: are these four areas the ones I feel most strongly about? Then look at the decade transformations. When a new ten-year period starts, the palace that receives its Hua Ji is the theme to watch. A beginner's rule: Lu shows what you gain, Ji shows what you must guard.
FAQ
What if Lu and Ji land in the same palace?
That area brings both opportunity and attachment: you gain, and you pay for it in effort. Often it goes well first and gets harder later.
Why do different sites show different transformations?
A few year stems differ between schools, most often Geng and Ren. We use the most common set, and the chart page marks each transformation.
Does a palace without Hua Ji have no problems?
No. Ji is just the most visible signal. Difficult stars, empty palaces and weak stars all count too.
