Quick answer: Zi Wei Dou Shu uses your lunar birth year, month, day and hour to lay out twelve "palaces" (Life, Siblings, Spouse, and so on), then places more than a hundred stars into them. You read it by asking which star sits in which palace.
How is a Zi Wei chart built?
There are three steps. First, your birth month and hour fix the Life Palace; the other eleven palaces follow in a set order. Second, the year stem and the Life Palace's branch give your "element pattern" (Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5, Fire 6), which sets the age your decade luck begins. Third, your birth day and that pattern place the Zi Wei star itself, and the rest of the 14 major stars fall into place around it. Minor stars and the Four Transformations are added from the year, month and hour. So the chart looks crowded, but its skeleton is simple: where the Life Palace is, and where Zi Wei is.
How is it different from BaZi?
| BaZi (Four Pillars) | Zi Wei Dou Shu | |
|---|---|---|
| Building blocks | Eight characters | Twelve palaces plus stars |
| Core question | Day Master strength, favorable elements | Which star is in which palace |
| Reading a topic | Infer it from the Ten Gods | Each topic has its own palace |
| Timing | 10-year luck pillars, annual pillars | 10-year decades, years, months |
| Learning curve | Lots of element logic | Many star names, but very visual |
BaZi reads your elemental constitution, like studying the wood of a tree. Zi Wei is more like a zoned map: for love, look at the Spouse Palace; for work, the Career Palace. The two can confirm each other, but keep their rules separate.
Where does it come from?
It took shape after the Song dynasty. The most widely circulated classic is the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, traditionally attributed to Chen Tuan. Schools differ on some details; our calculator follows the most common conventions.
What should a beginner look at first?
Three things: the Life Palace (who you are), the Body Palace (the side that shows more in midlife), and the Life Palace's "three directions and four squares" (Life, Wealth, Career and Travel together). An empty Life Palace is normal: you borrow the stars from the opposite palace.
FAQ
Do I need my lunar birthday?
The stars are placed by lunar month and day, but you only need to enter your normal calendar birthday. We convert it for you.
What if I don't know my birth hour?
The hour fixes the Life Palace, and one hour off moves everything by one palace. Cast the two neighboring hours and compare them with your life so far.
What if Zi Wei and BaZi disagree?
Read each system on its own terms first, then see which topic they disagree about. Conclusions that both systems point to deserve the most weight.
Can Zi Wei predict exactly what happens in a given year?
It shows which areas are active and which need care in a period. Treat it as an early heads-up rather than a fixed fate.
