What are the four angles?
The Ascendant (start of the 1st), IC (4th), Descendant (7th) and Midheaven (10th) are the four most sensitive points. Planets close to them show up strongly.
Does an empty house mean nothing happens there?
No. With ten planets and twelve houses, some houses are always empty. Read the sign on the cusp and where its ruling planet sits.
Why are there several house systems?
There are different ways to divide the sky into twelve, such as Placidus, Whole Sign and Equal. Placidus is the most common in modern Western charts; Whole Sign is the classical choice and is also used in Vedic astrology. At high latitudes the systems differ more, so note where the cusps fall.
