Sun, Moon and Rising: How to Read Your Big Three

Quick answer: Your Sun sign describes your core drive and who you want to become. Your Moon sign describes your emotions and what makes you feel safe. Your Rising sign (Ascendant) describes your first impression and how you meet the world. "I'm a Leo" is only the Sun; the three together are a much fuller picture.
What each one covers
| Point | Set by | Covers | In one line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Birth date | Self, will, life direction | Who I want to be |
| Moon | Birth date plus rough time | Feelings, habits, security | What I need to feel okay |
| Rising | Birth time plus place | Style, first impression, body | How others see me |
The Sun changes sign about once a month, the Moon about every two and a half days, and the Rising sign roughly every two hours. That is why the Rising sign needs an accurate birth time and place.
Why do people with the same sign differ so much?
Because the Sun is only a third of the story. Someone with a Leo Sun, Cancer Moon and Virgo Rising may look reserved and precise (Virgo Rising), feel homey and afraid of being left out (Cancer Moon), and still want, underneath it all, to be seen and appreciated (Leo Sun). Read only "Leo" and it won't sound like them.
What if the three clash?
The clash is information. A fire Sun with a water Moon often wants to charge ahead but fears getting hurt. An earth Rising with an air Sun looks steady while the ideas never stop. Seeing that tension as part of who you are is more useful than asking which one is "the real me."
How to read them
Start with the Rising sign, which sets where the houses begin. Then read the Sun's sign and house to see where your energy goes. Finish with the Moon to see when you relax. After that, move on to the other planets.
FAQ
Can I know my Rising sign without a birth time?
Not reliably, since it changes about every two hours. Without a time, read the Sun and Moon, and check whether the Moon changed sign on your birthday.
Is the Rising sign more accurate than the Sun sign?
Neither is more accurate; they cover different things. First impressions and outward style show the Rising sign; long-term goals and identity show the Sun.
Should I read horoscopes for my Sun or Rising sign?
Horoscopes by Rising sign usually fit better because they follow the houses. Use your Sun sign if you don't know your Rising.
