Quick answer: In a birth chart, planets are the "what": the Sun is the self, the Moon emotions, Mercury thinking and talking, Venus love and values, Mars action and desire, Jupiter growth and luck, Saturn duty and limits. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto describe slow, deep changes shared by a whole generation.

Putting planet, sign and house together

Read each planet as one sentence: "(planet) expresses itself in a (sign) way, in the area of (house)." Venus in Gemini in the 7th house: in love (Venus) you value good conversation and novelty (Gemini), and it shows mostly in partnership (7th house).

Do the outer planets matter?

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that most people born in the same year share their signs, so the sign alone says little. Their house and any tight aspects to your personal planets are the personal part.

How did classical astrology see the planets?

Classical authors such as Ptolemy used only the seven visible bodies, Sun through Saturn, and split them into benefics (Jupiter, Venus) and malefics (Saturn, Mars). Modern readings talk less about good and bad and more about whether an energy is used well. Both views are worth knowing.

FAQ

What does a retrograde planet mean?

Seen from Earth, the planet appears to move backward; it doesn't really. In a birth chart it usually means that energy turns inward and takes longer to mature.

Does Saturn's house show where life goes badly?

Saturn shows where you have to put in work. It is hard early and often the most solid later, a "late bloomer" area.

Why is the Moon so important?

It describes your everyday feelings and sense of safety, so many astrologers rank it with the Sun and Rising as the Big Three.
