What is Companion (Bi Jian) in BaZi?

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-15

Companion is the character with the same element and the same yin-yang polarity as your Day Master — a second “you” in the chart. When you are weak it shoulders the load with you; when you are already strong and Wealth is thin, it becomes the sibling who takes a share.

Definition
Same element as the Day Master = Peers; same polarity = Companion, opposite = Rob Wealth
Check first
Day Master strength: weak charts welcome Companion, strong charts don't need more
With Wealth
Peers control Wealth: they compete when you are strong and Wealth is thin, and help carry it when you are weak
Structure
Peers never name the structure: with a Companion month, look at the other hidden stems or the dominant force

Is Companion good or bad? A helper on weak charts, a rival on strong ones

Companion has no fixed verdict; it follows Day Master strength. If Wealth, Officer and Output are all draining you, one more of your own kind standing alongside is extra strength. If you are already strong, another “you” only tips the chart further.

In our sample, charts with a visible Companion stem are 40.4% weak and 35.7% strong. The same character helps in many charts and burdens many others, so don't label it lucky or unlucky first.

What does “Companion competes for Wealth” mean?

Peers control Wealth — plain five-element logic. The Day Master controls Wealth, so its twin does too. Strong Day Master, thin Wealth, several Companions: several people splitting one pay packet.

Flip it: weak Day Master and heavy Wealth, and Companion helps you carry the load — such charts often do better in Companion luck cycles than in Wealth cycles. The smoothest fix for competition is Output (what the Day Master produces): Companion feeds Output, Output feeds Wealth, and grabbing turns into producing. This is called bridging.

Why don't Peers define the chart structure?

A Companion month does not make a “Companion structure”. Companion is you; calling it the theme of the chart says nothing about where the chart is heading. Our method: when the month's main qi is a Peer, check whether the month's other hidden stems show on a stem, and failing that, take whichever force dominates the chart.

Tradition calls this kind of month “Jian Lu” (the Day Master's own prosperity in the month). About one chart in five in our sample (20.9%) has a Peer as month main qi and needs this second look.

Companion vs. Rob Wealth

Same element, different polarity. Companion shares your polarity — a like-minded sibling who helps bluntly and shares bluntly. Rob Wealth has the opposite polarity and hits your Direct Wealth more directly, which is why tradition treats it as the rougher of the two.

In practice, read them together as Peers first — helping or competing? — and only then ask whether Rob Wealth sits right next to Direct Wealth. See the Rob Wealth entry.

Two real charts

Xin Si · Xin Mao · Xin Si · Yi Wei (female, 19 Mar 2001, 14:30, Beijing)

Xin Metal is born in Mao: spring Wood is strong and Metal is out of season. Hour stem Yi and month branch Mao are Indirect Wealth; the two Si branches are Direct Officer. Wealth and Officer drain the Day Master from both sides, and the calculator rates it slightly weak. What holds the chart up is the pair of Xin Companions on the year and month stems — three Xin standing side by side.

Calculator: Metal useful, Water and Earth favourable, Wood and Fire unfavourable. The Useful God is Companion itself. Water is Output for Xin and strength alone would keep it light; it is favourable here because spring Xin takes Water in our climate table.

Yi Si · Jia Shen · Ren Xu · Ren Yin (female, 5 Sep 1965, 04:00, Beijing)

Ren Water is born in Shen; Metal feeds Water, so the season supports it. The hour stem Ren is Companion and Shen hides Geng Indirect Resource: slightly strong. The only Wealth is the Si year branch (Indirect Wealth), so a visible Companion on a strong chart with thin Wealth is the classic competing-for-Wealth shape.

Calculator: Earth useful, Wood and Fire favourable, Metal and Water unfavourable. Companion (Water) is unfavourable, while the Yi Hurting Officer and Jia Eating God stems are favourable: they absorb Water and feed the Si Fire, turning competition into flow. The Si–Shen harmony and Yin–Shen clash both land on Shen, the Resource root, so luck that moves Shen deserves a second look.

Data: on charts with a visible Companion, is it usually a helper or a rival?

Companion shows on a stem in 25.5% of charts, about one in four. On those charts the calculator lists the Peer element as favourable in 37.8%, unfavourable in 27.1%, and as the Useful God itself in only 8.8% — Companion is more often a supporting actor than the lead.

Across all strong charts, 70.1% list the Peer element as unfavourable; across all weak charts, 21.3% use Peers as the Useful God, and most of the rest use Resource. Resource is the steadier support, consistent with “weak charts take Resource first”.

Visible Companion plus a strong Day Master plus Wealth in the chart — the case to watch for competition — is 22.0% of Companion charts. Companion as month main qi is 10.3% of all charts.

Sample: 2,000 charts cast with our own engine (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time); fixed seed, fully reproducible.

FAQ

I have lots of Companions in my chart. Does that mean I can't save money?

It means your own element is heavy. Strong with thin Wealth, money does tend to get shared out; weak, extra Companions are good news. Saving also depends on Output, Wealth and your luck cycles.

Companion is my favourable element. Should I go into business with partners?

Favourable Companion is often read as working well with peers and teams, but whether a partnership works depends on the people and the terms. Treat the chart as a light reference.

What happens in a Companion year?

Weak charts usually feel supported and more confident; strong charts with thin Wealth should watch for competition and rising costs. Natal Output that bridges the two softens it.

Which is worse, Companion or Rob Wealth?

Neither by default. Tradition is harder on Rob Wealth because it hits Direct Wealth more directly, but both start from Day Master strength.
