Balanced Day Master (Zhong He): what an exact tie means, and why it is rare

FateClear Editorial · Updated 2026-10-22

Balanced Day Master (中和, Zhong He) means the Day Master is neither too strong nor too weak: the forces that support it, Resource and Companions, and the forces that drain, spend or control it, Output, Wealth and Officer/Killings, carry comparable weight. Balance is the direction every reading aims at, and the Useful element is the element that pulls the chart toward it. Our site calls a chart Balanced only when its support points and pressure points are exactly equal. When the month command is the Day Master's Resource or Companions, the chart is read as strong at once, with two exceptions: the month branch is clashed and the Day Master has no own-element root elsewhere, or the month branch combines into an Output, Wealth or Officer/Killings structure. A near tie still gets a direction. When the tie is exact, climate adjustment and the disease-medicine idea supply the missing direction.

YunBalanced means support and pressure tie exactly, so our site rarely shows it.

Data: 4 Balanced charts and the 363 that come close

Balanced is nearly absent from a random set. Only 4 of the 2,000 charts, 0.2%, ended Balanced. The raw points tied in 15 charts, but the birth-hour fine table then moved 11 of those to strong or weak.

The support share shows how the set is built. Among the 1898 non-special charts, 29% had a support share of 30% or below, 32.3% between 30% and 45%, 19.1% between 45% and 55%, 16.2% between 55% and 70%, and 3.4% above 70%.

The near-Balanced group is 363 charts, 18.1%. Within it, 64.7% were strong and 34.2% weak. A helpful month command made 41% strong directly, and 25.9% were strong although support points were below pressure points. Only 1.7% had no unfavorable element.

The Useful elements of near-Balanced charts are spread out. Officer/Killings 30.6%, Resource 23.7%, Output 20.4%, Wealth 14% and Companions 11.3%. All strong charts lean to Officer/Killings 39.4%, Output 31.2% and Wealth 29.3%; all weak charts lean to Resource 77.3% and Companions 22.6%. Separately, 1612 charts (80.6%) had all five elements present, and only 18.8% of those were near Balanced, close to the 18.1% overall.

Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Balanced was counted only when support and pressure points were exactly equal after the full point count and the birth-hour fine table; support-share bands, the month-command rule, Useful elements and the all-five-elements group were tallied separately, with special structures excluded where noted. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.

An exact tie, not a personality type

Balanced Day Master describes a measurement, not a character. Support points come from Resource and Companions; pressure points come from Output, Wealth and Officer/Killings. When the two totals are exactly equal, there is no side to strengthen and no side to restrain.

Every reading is trying to move the chart toward that tie. A weak Day Master is supported by its Useful element; a strong one is drained, spent or controlled by its Useful element. Balance is the destination, not a prize handed out at birth.

Only 4 of the 2,000 charts we cast reached it, 0.2%. In 15 charts the raw points were equal, but the birth-hour fine table then placed 11 of them on the strong or weak side. The exact label is rarer than the arithmetic suggests.

The month command can settle it before the counting starts

A helpful month command can make a chart strong on its own. When the main qi of the month branch is the Day Master's Resource or Companions, our site reads the chart as strong at once. The points still matter, but they no longer have the last word.

Two exceptions keep that rule from swallowing everything. One is a month branch that is clashed while the Day Master has no own-element root elsewhere. The other is a month branch that combines into an Output, Wealth or Officer/Killings structure. In those cases the month command is not standing behind the Day Master in the same way.

This rule decides most strong charts. It settled 59.6% of all strong charts, and in 12% of all charts it made the chart strong even though support points were lower than pressure points.

Near Balanced is a large group that still splits

Charts close to a tie are common; ties are not. Those with a support share of 45%–55% numbered 363, 18.1% of the 2,000. Of that group, 64.7% were strong and 34.2% weak. A near tie does not remove the need for a direction.

Their Useful elements spread across all five families. Officer/Killings was Useful in 30.6%, Resource 23.7%, Output 20.4%, Wealth 14% and Companions 11.3%. Clear strong charts lean to Officer/Killings 39.4%, Output 31.2% and Wealth 29.3%; clear weak charts lean to Resource 77.3% and Companions 22.6%.

A chart with no unfavorable element is almost unheard of. Only 1.7% of the near-Balanced charts had an empty unfavorable list. The reading keeps a direction even when the numbers look level.

Why the same chart can read Balanced somewhere else

Different rules produce different labels for the same four pillars. In the near-Balanced group, 41% were made strong directly by a helpful month command. Another 25.9% were strong even though support points were below pressure points. Both are ordinary outcomes under our rule.

That is the usual reason a chart reads Balanced in one reading and strong in another. The label depends on whether the month command is allowed to decide, and on which characters count as support. The four pillars do not change; the rule does.

Neither label is a compliment or an insult. Each leads to a direction, and the direction is what the Useful element follows. A strong label asks for drain, spend or control; a weak label asks for support.

When the tie is exact, climate steps in

With an exact tie, support and pressure have nothing to say. The reading turns to climate adjustment, which asks whether the chart is too cold, too hot, too dry or too damp, and to the disease-medicine idea, which looks for the one element that resolves the chart's main trouble. A Useful element still exists; it comes from a different question.

The second worked example is one of the 4. Its support and pressure both came to 3.5, and the tie sent the reading to climate. A chart does not need a tie to be read well, and a tie does not make it lucky.

Two real charts

Gui Chou (癸丑) · Wu Wu (戊午) · Geng Chen (庚辰) · Yi You (乙酉) (female, Jun 13, 1973, 18:30, Beijing)

This chart sits just above a tie, and our site still reads it strong. True solar time was 18:15. The birth came after Grain in Ear, so the month pillar is Wu Wu. The Day Master is Geng Metal, born in a Wu month; Fire is in command and Metal is dead in that season, so it is out of season. The stems are Gui Hurting Officer, Wu Indirect Resource and Yi Direct Wealth. The branches are Chou Direct Resource, Wu Direct Officer, Chen Indirect Resource and You Rob Wealth. The chart has a Chen–You Six Harmony.

The scoring gives Resource 2.57, Officer/Killings 1.33, Wealth 1.3, Companions 1.05 and Output 0.75, and the chart is strong (support 3.62, pressure 3.38). The support share is 51.67%, only just over half. Useful element Water (Output), favorable Wood and Fire, unfavorable Earth and Metal.

The tie is close, not exact, so the direction survives. A strong Geng Metal drains with Water, spends with Wood and controls with Fire. Water is also the element for a mid-summer Geng Metal in the climate table, so two reasons land on the same element. Treating this chart as Balanced and supplementing at random would lose that direction.

Ji Si (己巳) · Ji Si (己巳) · Xin Si (辛巳) · Ren Chen (壬辰) (male, May 21, 1989, 08:00, Beijing)

This is one of the 4: support and pressure come to exactly the same total. True solar time was 07:49. The birth came after Start of Summer, so the month pillar is Ji Si. The Day Master is Xin Metal, born in a Si month; Fire is in command and Metal is dead in that season, so it is out of season. The stems are Ji Indirect Resource, Ji Indirect Resource and Ren Hurting Officer. The branches are Si Direct Officer, Si Direct Officer, Si Direct Officer and Chen Direct Resource.

The scoring gives Resource 2.45, Officer/Killings 2.1, Output 1.1, Companions 1.05 and Wealth 0.3, and the chart is Balanced (support 3.5, pressure 3.5). Useful element Water (Hurting Officer), favorable Earth and Metal, unfavorable Wood.

An exact tie sends the choice to climate. Three Si Fire Direct Officer press Xin Metal, while two Ji Earth Indirect Resource and Chen Earth Direct Resource keep generating it; the two sides balance. Xin Metal born in early summer meets hot, dry weather, so climate takes Water first. The Useful element is still there; it simply comes from climate rather than from a support/pressure direction.

FAQ

Is a Balanced Day Master good or bad?

It is neither. Balanced describes a Day Master whose support and pressure tie, so the reading has to look elsewhere for a direction. A Balanced chart still has a Useful element and favorable and unfavorable elements. In the 2,000 charts we cast, only 4 were Balanced, and luck also depends on the Luck Pillars and on real choices, so one label never decides a life.

What element should a Balanced person supplement?

Look at the Useful element, not at all five elements. When the tie is exact, our site uses climate adjustment to choose: too cold, too hot, too dry or too damp points to one element. Example 2 is Balanced and takes Water because Xin Metal is born in early summer. Adding a little of everything would blur the direction.

Why does another reading call my chart Balanced when you call it strong?

The usual reason is the month command. In the near-Balanced group, 41% were made strong directly by a helpful month command, and another 25.9% were strong even though support points were below pressure points. If the other reading counts characters differently or gives the month command less weight, the same four pillars can land on Balanced. Neither label changes the pillars.

Does a Balanced chart mean every Luck Pillar is fine?

No. A Balanced chart still has favorable and unfavorable elements, so some Luck Pillars fit better than others. A Luck Pillar is also only one layer; the natal chart, the Annual Pillar and real circumstances all matter. One factor never decides a period of life.
