Four Great Voids (Si Da Kong Wang): a Na Yin lookup, not the ordinary Void
Four Great Voids (Si Da Kong Wang) is a separate version of Void (Kong Wang), and it is not the ordinary decade void. The ordinary void takes the two branches missing from the decade the day pillar belongs to; this entry is about a different lookup. Four Great Voids uses Na Yin, the element name given to each of the sixty stem-branch pairs, such as “Sea Metal” or “Stream Water”. Na Yin is not the same as the element of the stem and branch themselves. The sixty pairs form six decades. In the Jia Zi and Jia Wu decades, none of the ten pairs has Na Yin Water. In the Jia Shen and Jia Yin decades, none has Na Yin Metal. Our site's “Symbolic Stars lookup” marks Four Great Voids when the day pillar falls in the Jia Zi or Jia Wu decade and the birth year pillar's Na Yin is Water, or when the day pillar falls in the Jia Shen or Jia Yin decade and the year pillar's Na Yin is Metal. We list it only; it does not enter strength or favorability.

Na Yin first: a name on a pair, not the pair's own element
Four Great Voids cannot be read without Na Yin, so start there. Na Yin gives each of the sixty stem-branch pairs an element name, such as “Sea Metal” or “Stream Water”. The name is a separate layer; it is not the element of the stem and the branch that carry it.
The sixty pairs sit in six decades of ten. The Jia Zi and Jia Wu decades contain no pair whose Na Yin is Water. The Jia Shen and Jia Yin decades contain no pair whose Na Yin is Metal. That gap is the whole basis of the lookup.
The lookup: the missing element of the decade, found on the year pillar
The rule is narrow: the day pillar's decade sets the missing element, and the year pillar has to supply it. A day pillar in the Jia Zi or Jia Wu decade is marked when the year pillar's Na Yin is Water. A day pillar in the Jia Shen or Jia Yin decade is marked when the year pillar's Na Yin is Metal.
One condition is not enough. Two thirds of all charts, 67%, have a day pillar in one of these four decades, but only 13.4% also have the matching year pillar. Our site lists the marker in the “Symbolic Stars lookup” and nothing else.
Wider versions catch half of all charts
Every version that extends the lookup makes the label more common, not more precise. Looking at the Na Yin of the year, month and hour pillars from the day pillar's decade gives 677 charts, 33.9%. Looking from the year pillar's decade at the month, day and hour pillars gives 34%.
Count either wide version and the marker reaches one chart in two. The two wide versions together cover 50.6%. Our narrow rule and the year-pillar-decade method agree on only 6% of charts. A label that changes that much with the rule is a name, not a force.
The decade itself is common, which is why the narrow rule still needs the year pillar. The four decades hold two thirds of all day pillars, but the year pillar's Na Yin has to match as well, and that is what cuts the group to 269 charts.
Na Yin element and Useful element are two different systems
The element that is “voided” here is a Na Yin name, and the Useful element is read from the stems and branches. Mixing the two produces false conclusions. After removing special structures, the voided element (Water or Metal) was the Useful element in 20.9% of the 254 hit charts, against 22.8% of the 1011 charts in the same decades without a match.
Favorability is just as even. The same voided element was listed unfavorable in 29.5% of the hit charts and 32.5% of the unmatched ones. If the Na Yin name controlled favorability, those two numbers would not sit so close.
Strength does not move either. The hit charts were 48% strong, and all 2,000 charts were 46.7% strong. Four Great Voids does not make a chart stronger or weaker.
On our site: listed, never counted
We show Four Great Voids and then set it aside. The reading still starts from the month command, the four pillars and the strength count, then the Useful element and the favorable and unfavorable lists. The marker never joins those steps.
That choice follows the numbers, not a taste for caution. A label that hits 13.4% under one rule and 50.6% under another cannot carry a judgment. It is useful as a traditional note beside the chart, and that is how we present it.
Data: how wide the lookup gets, and what it does to strength
Under our narrow rule 269 charts matched, 13.4% of the 2,000, and the result agreed with the “Symbolic Stars lookup” on every chart. Water types, from the Jia Zi and Jia Wu decades, were 142; Metal types, from the Jia Shen and Jia Yin decades, were 127.
By decade the four groups are close: Jia Zi 79, Jia Shen 64, Jia Yin 63 and Jia Wu 63. Day pillars in these four decades are 67% of all charts, but the year pillar's Na Yin also has to match, and that is what narrows the group to 269.
The wider versions are the real story. Looking at the year, month and hour pillars from the day pillar's decade gives 677 charts, 33.9%; looking from the year pillar's decade gives 34%; counting either gives 50.6%. Our narrow rule and the year-pillar-decade method agree on only 6%.
Strength and favorability barely notice the marker. The hit charts were 48% strong, against 46.7% of all 2,000. After removing special structures, the voided element was Useful in 20.9% of the 254 hit charts and 22.8% of the 1011 unmatched charts in the same decades; it was listed unfavorable in 29.5% and 32.5%.
Simulated charts: our BaZi calculator generated 2,000 random birth times (birth years 1950–2010 uniformly random, random birth time, half male/half female, Beijing true solar time), cast each chart and judged strength and the Useful element by traditional rules, then counted the results. These are simulated results, not a survey of real people and not a measure of prediction accuracy. Four Great Voids was counted when the day pillar fell in one of the four named decades and the year pillar's Na Yin supplied the element missing from that decade; wider lookups were counted separately, and strength and the favorability of the voided element were tallied inside the hit and unmatched groups. Calculation version: our BaZi calculator after the Oct 15, 2026 update (the same rules the site uses now; rechecked with site version v73 on Oct 20, 2026), random seed 20261014. To reproduce: rerun the same version with the same seed and the results match exactly; you can check any single chart by entering the same birth time in our BaZi calculator.
Common view vs. our view
| Common view | Our view | Why |
|---|---|---|
| People with Four Great Voids have a blocked life and a short lifespan | It is a Na Yin lookup, and it does not judge lifespan or fortune | Our narrow rule already gives 13.4%, wider rules reach 50.6%; a label that common cannot predict an outcome |
| Four Great Voids is the same as ordinary Void | Ordinary Void reads branches; Four Great Voids reads Na Yin | The ordinary Void looks for the two missing branches of the day pillar's decade; Four Great Voids looks for a Na Yin element on the year pillar |
| The voided element cannot be used | A Na Yin element is not the element of the stem and branch | The voided element was Useful in 20.9% of the 254 hit charts, against 22.8% of the 1011 unmatched charts in the same decades |
| A fuller lookup is a more accurate one | The wider the lookup, the more charts it catches and the less it says | The two wide versions give 33.9% and 34%, and counting either gives 50.6% |
Two real charts
Ding Chou (丁丑) · Yi Si (乙巳) · Ding Mao (丁卯) · Wu Shen (戊申) (male, May 25, 1997, 16:45, Beijing)
This is a Water-type Four Great Voids chart, and the voided element is actually welcome. True solar time was 16:33. The day pillar Ding Mao belongs to the Jia Zi decade, and the year pillar Ding Chou has Na Yin “Stream Water”, so the marker applies. The Day Master is Ding Fire, born in a Si month; the main qi of Si is Bing Fire, Rob Wealth, so the month command supports the Day Master. The stems are Ding Companion, Yi Indirect Resource and Wu Hurting Officer. The branches are Chou Eating God, Si Rob Wealth, Mao Indirect Resource and Shen Direct Wealth.
The scoring gives Resource 2, Companions 1.7, Output 1.6, Wealth 1.25 and Officer/Killings 0.45, and the chart is strong (month support; support 3.7, pressure 3.3). Useful element Metal (Wealth), favorable Water and Earth, unfavorable Fire.
Water is the element the Na Yin calls void, and by the stems and branches it is favorable here. A strong Ding Fire benefits from Officer/Killings, which Water supplies. The Na Yin “Water” is only the name of the Ding Chou pair; Ding Chou itself is Ding Fire on Chou Earth. The two layers should not be merged. The chart's reading is unchanged: Metal is Useful, Water and Earth are favorable, Fire is not.
Xin Si (辛巳) · Xin Mao (辛卯) · Ji Chou (己丑) · Yi Chou (乙丑) (female, Mar 27, 2001, 02:30, Beijing)
Here the marked year pillar is also the pillar that holds the Useful element. True solar time was 02:09. The day pillar Ji Chou belongs to the Jia Shen decade, and the year pillar Xin Si has Na Yin “Wax Metal”, so the marker applies. The Day Master is Ji Earth, born in a Mao month; the main qi of Mao is Yi Wood, Seven Killings. The stems are Xin Eating God, Xin Eating God and Yi Seven Killings. The branches are Si Direct Resource, Mao Seven Killings, Chou Companion and Chou Companion.
The scoring gives Officer/Killings 3, Output 1.85, Companions 1.25, Wealth 0.6 and Resource 0.3, and the chart is weak (support 1.55, pressure 5.45). Useful element Fire (Resource), favorable Earth, unfavorable Water.
Treating the marked pillar as empty would throw away the only Resource in the chart. The year branch Si Fire is the sole Resource and the place where the Useful element sits. Seven Killings at 3 points press Ji Earth, and Si Fire transforms the Killings and feeds the Day Master. The Na Yin name on Xin Si does not cancel that role.
Common mistakes
- Four Great Voids shortens life or blocks a career: it is a Na Yin marker outside strength and favorability; the narrow rule hits 13.4% and wider rules 50.6%, so it cannot be a life sentence.
- Four Great Voids and ordinary Void are the same thing: ordinary Void reads the missing branches of the day pillar's decade, while Four Great Voids reads a Na Yin element; they are separate entries for a reason.
- A voided element is unusable: the voided element was the Useful element in 20.9% of the 254 hit charts, close to 22.8% in the unmatched charts, so the name does not decide its role.
- Checking more pillars makes the reading better: the wide versions reach 33.9%, 34% and 50.6%, which is too common to separate one chart from another.
FAQ
Is Four Great Voids very unlucky, and do I need to resolve it?
No. It is a Na Yin lookup, and we keep it outside strength and favorability. In the 2,000 charts we cast, 269 (13.4%) matched under our narrow rule, while wider versions reach 50.6%. Something that common cannot mark a life as blocked. Read the Day Master's strength and the Useful element instead; no ritual is needed for a name.
I was born in a Jia Zi decade. Does that mean I have Four Great Voids?
Not by itself. The day pillar has to fall in the Jia Zi or Jia Wu decade and the year pillar's Na Yin has to be Water. Day pillars in these four decades are 67% of all charts, but the full match is only 13.4%. Check both pieces before using the label.
What is the difference between Four Great Voids and ordinary Void?
Ordinary Void reads the two branches missing from the decade of the day pillar, so it works on branches. Four Great Voids reads Na Yin, the element name of a stem-branch pair, and looks for the element missing from the day pillar's decade on the year pillar. They use different layers and can point in different directions; our site keeps an entry for each.
Should Four Great Voids also check Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars?
Our site checks the natal chart only. We do not use Four Great Voids to judge a Luck Pillar or an Annual Pillar, and it never enters strength or favorability. Some traditions extend the lookup to moving pillars, but that is a different rule with a different hit rate. For a year's reading, use the natal chart, the Luck Pillar and the Annual Pillar.
