How to Read a Mei Hua Hexagram

Quick answer: Read in two layers. Body and use elements tell you whether things flow; the trigram images tell you how. The main hexagram is the present, the nuclear hexagram the process and the changed hexagram the outcome. Each trigram carries a set of images (people, body parts, qualities) that you map onto your question.

Question: should I pursue this partnership? Cast: The Family, line 2 moving.
- Now (The Family): about roles and order inside a group; the key is whether each side's role is clear. Body Xun, use Li, body supports use: you are putting in more.
- Process (Coming to Meet): an unexpected person or condition enters. Qian Metal cutting Xun Wood suggests pressure from a stronger party.
- Outcome (Small Taming): "dense clouds, no rain yet": a modest result, but the timing isn't ripe.
Together: worth talking, but write down roles and returns first, and don't commit everything at once.
Should I read the I Ching text?
The hexagram and line texts of the Book of Changes, especially the moving line, often point to the crux. Still, Mei Hua decides mainly by body and use; the text adds color.
FAQ
What if the images and the elements disagree?
Let the elements set the direction and the images describe the details. A clash usually means "the result can work, but not in the way you expect."
Are ominous names like Splitting Apart or Oppression bad news?
A name describes the situation. Splitting Apart says let go of what should go; Oppression says hold your ground and don't force it. Read them with body and use.
Does one hexagram read the same for every question?
No. Images follow the question: for work, Qian may be your boss; for family, your father.
