BaZi Compatibility: How Marriage Matching Works

Quick answer: BaZi matching looks at three things. Favorable elements: are the elements strong in your partner's chart the ones you need? Day pillars: do your Day Masters combine, and do your day branches (the spouse palace) combine or clash? Luck pillars: do your good and hard decades overlap or offset? Zodiac-animal matching alone is far too rough.
Step 1: do your elements complement each other?
Work out each chart's useful and unfavorable elements, then look at the strongest elements in the other chart. If your partner is strong in what you need, you'll often feel supported; if they're strong in what you should avoid, you may feel drained. Example (a made-up chart): take the chart Ren Shen, Wu Shen, Gui Hai, Ding Si. The Day Master is Gui Water and strong, with plenty of Water and Metal. This chart needs Wood most, then Earth and Fire, and should go easy on Metal and Water. A partner rich in Wood helps drain off the extra Water and tends to supply what this chart needs, while a partner heavy in Metal and Water just pours more water in, and the two of you are more likely to drift apart and wear each other down.
Step 2: the day pillars
| Relationship | Pairs | Usual reading |
|---|---|---|
| Day stems combine | Jia–Ji, Yi–Geng, Bing–Xin, Ding–Ren, Wu–Gui | Mutual attraction, easy understanding |
| Day branches combine | Zi–Chou, Yin–Hai, Mao–Xu, Chen–You, Si–Shen, Wu–Wei | The spouse palaces bond; closeness comes easily |
| Day branches clash | Zi–Wu, Chou–Wei, Yin–Shen, Mao–You, Chen–Xu, Si–Hai | Different rhythms and arguments, but also mutual push |
| Branch triads | Shen–Zi–Chen, Hai–Mao–Wei, etc. | Shared goals come easily |
In the example the day branch is Hai. A partner with a Yin day branch forms a Yin–Hai combination; a Si day branch forms a Si–Hai clash. Note that this chart already has a Si–Hai clash between its day and hour branches, so a partner bringing more Si Fire would make the spouse palace even less settled.
Step 3: do your luck pillars line up?
If one of you is rising for years while the other is in a slump, everyday rhythms drift apart. If you're both in good luck, or one can carry the other through a low period, things go more smoothly. This is the most overlooked and most practical step.
What about zodiac animals?
Animal matches (like Rat and Ox) only use the birth year, shared by one in twelve people, so they say little. Real matching rests on the day pillars and the overall element balance.
FAQ
Does a day-branch clash mean we can't marry?
No. A clash means different rhythms and temperaments, so you need to talk more. Many couples with a clash push each other to grow.
Is matching the same for men and women?
The method is basically the same. Traditionally a man's Wealth star and a woman's Officer star stand for the spouse, but modern matching weighs the overall element balance and day pillars more.
Can we match without birth hours?
Yes, with the year, month and day pillars. Without the hour pillar, leave some room in the conclusions.
